A FIELD FOR AUSTRALIAN TRADE.

New Shipping Line Urged to Shaughal

The Commercial Agent of New South Wales in the Far East, Mr Butter, has col lected a lot of load Prada information and statistics, and upon them and his personal observations he has based & report, which he forwarded to the Minister for Mines and Agriculture, of New South Wales Ed comments upon the depressing effect of the war on Chinese internal affairs, and argues that but for the tremendous dislocation of local trade caused during the past 10 years by abnormal forces China's commer- cial relation with the outside would, com-- pared with her past, be prodigious. But despite all adversities the awakening of China to a recognition and appreciation of Western commerce is so pronounced that figuratively speaking shackles of iron would not hold hat from expanalóné. Her moves ment towards a settled policy is as sure as it is slow, and with it the possibilities of trade with such teeming millions is too obvious to need argument. In a few years, ' Mr Suttor writes, 'Japan has built up a trade of £60,000,000,' and the trade of China, so much greater and richer, mus 1376 easily outstrip that expansion. In 1902 her shipping showed an increase for the 12 months of nearly 3 million tons, the British Empire taking the giant's share of that increase, as it does in the total trade, Franco coming next in order, and Germany

A SPORTIVE M.P.

Mr Verburgh, M.P., was so vigorously heckled at Chester on the Chinese Labour ordinance, late on the night of January 12 that the police wore summoned. "The hon. momber was saying that the mines could not be carried on except under the present con- ditions, when he was interrupted. Turning to his opponents he said :-I will make an offer to any two men in this room, and will

deposit the money. I will pay your fares out, obtain work for you in the mines, and you shall forfeit a certain sum if you do not remain there six months. Will you take

that?

A Voice-Will you pay the exponses ?

Mr Yerburgh.→Yos...

The Voice. We will accept it.

I have Mr Yerburgh. Right you are. smade a sporting offer, and I mean business. I contend that white men cannot stand the continued strain of working in the mines.

A Voice, What rot.

Mr Yerburgh. You say, in a very elegant way, it is rot. I say white men cannot live on the food or wages of black White mon require much higher

mon.

wages.

The Voice. Why not give it them? (Laughter.)

Mr Yerburgh then increased his offer to include six men.

Voice. Give us twelve shillings por day

and we will go. -

Mr Yorburgh concluded his speech by saying he had spent a very jolly evening.
