TESTING FAITH HEALING.
An Extraordinary Occurrence.
-The extraordinary religious mission of a man and woman named Watson, who had been in the town of Walhalla (Victoria)- during a recent fortnight, delivering ad- dresses, culminated in a sensational scene, when the woman, in order to demonstrate the efficacy of faith healing, allowed a anake to bite her several times. A couple of miles beyond the outskirts of the town the Watsons found a black snake, and the woman securing it allowed it to bite hor on the arm several times. ·A· number of persons witnessed the occurrence, and state that the snake attacked the woman savagely. While it was biting ber the woman exclaimed to the bystandora, Dhl you ever see the clergyman do that?In answer to questions, she remarked that she had done it for the Lord's enke. The man took charge of the snake, and carried it about with him. The police

GERMAN SPECIALIST'S REMARKABLE CURE.
Berlin, Dec. 12-Early in the autumn. Mrs Arthur Paget, wife of
Fage of the Scolae Guardar-Genera
met with
most serious accident by falling down the shaft of a lift and breaking her leg and both ankles.
|-
The fractured bones were set in the usual way, but while those of the ankles healed normaally, those of the leg refused
to reunito. At the beginning of Noven- ber, Professor Hoffa, of Berlin, who has a world reputation as a bone expert, was called in, and after chloroforming the patient broke the bono again at the. original fracture, and reset it in his own way. When he arrived in the sick-room-

ordering her to get up and make a few steps from the bed to a chair, which the lady did.
As soon as possible the patient was re- moved to Professor Hoffa's private hospital in Berlin, where the same treatment, with the now indispensable massaging, was con- tinued. The result has been marvellous, and the cure is the chief topic of conversa tion in the British Colony here. The pati 1685 eat dreaded the
coming of the physician. but every morning she had to take her short walk across the room, though the combined nervousness and pain caused the per- spiration to stream down her face. Mrs Paget has now entirely regained her spirits, talks cheerfully with her friends, is in ex- cellent health, and will soon be able to walk as well as ever, except for a slight stiffness of the knee. The wrinderful cure is ascrit- ed almost as much to Professor Hoffa's will-power in inducing the patient to obey his orders as to his surgical skill,

Shark Fishing at Singapore.
The crew of the "Thetis" beguile the time in Singapore harbour fishing for sharks. Recently they caught one big one and divided the teeth. Later on they caught another, and, on cutting it open, found forty-five young ones inside. It is
demonstrated indubitably that a prolongation of the present situation was a public danger and a usurpation of power.
With reference to the War he hoped that Lord Landsdowne would embrace the earliest opportunity of using England's influence on the side of peace.

He did not. think that the evi- dence he had intended to adduco would materially affect His Lordship's judgment and consequently did not propose to call any.. Ho, however, raised n point of law as to whether the plaintiffs were entitled to claim damages for a loss they had not suffered. By the evidence put forward by the plaintiffs it was clear that they had not suffered the full loss. They might have gone into the market and bought the yarn at the increased price, but they did not. Therefore, he contended, defendants were not liable to pay the full damages. If plaintiffs bad purchased defendants would have to make good their loss.
The Chief Justice-I see your point; you submit that damages must be limited by the occasions on which plaintiffs had to go into the market and buy. loss they actually suffered, but we are not obliged to give them a present as well.

Arguments were submitted by both sides on the point, after which the Chief Justice gave judgment for plaintiffs for the full amount claimed.
