Lord Mount Stephen's welcome gift justifios & reference to the personality and the career of the giver, and it may be sai at once that few romancea of real life are more interesting than that of George Stephen's leap to fortune and high station.

Stephen's succese was almost unbroken In time he became a director of the Bank of Montreal, thon vice-president, and then president; also president of the St. Paul and Manitoba Railway and head of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
It was in connection with this last-named undertaking that Lord Mount Stephen's best work for Canada was done. Few things have done more for the Colony than the completed scheme of a railway across to Vancouver.
Lord Mount Stephen, his cousin Lord Strathconu, Sir William Van Horno, and Sir Sandford Fleming took a prominent part in the work, and it was as some reward for his labours that Stephen was created a baronet in 1886 and raised to the peerage our first Colonial peer--in 1891.
In Canada and since his return to Eng- land Lord Mount Stephen has availed him- self always of opportunites of helping useful charities. He and Lord Strathcona gave
nearly a quarter of a million sterling each for a hospital in Montreal.

The not result of the past twelve months trading with steamers under the British Hag must be written up as a fourth year of unprofitable werk, though a few trades have relieved the general monotony, and cause it to compare in a small degree fav ourably with 1903. The volume of trade has been large, considering the general restrictive toudency of all markets, but rates of carriage have ruled below profitable THE ANGLO-AMERICAN STORE'S figures, in many cases involving, serious loar. The waving features have been tho revival of trade in India and Australia, and continued good crops in Argentinn, coupled with a small share in the profits of contra. band trade with each of the belligerents in the Far East. The forecast for the next 12 months is by no means encouraging- mainly on account of the continued over- production of new tonnage-the total out put for 1904 will show but an insignifican) duction on the record returns of the three preceding years. Low prices have seduced any owners, and large orders were given out in the Spring and Automn. Apart from the effects of the war in progress. there are few if any signs of increase in the demand for carriage as against the con- tinned large increase of tonnage, and this position soums Jikely to prevail for another | two yours-and to correspond with the two previous #ycles the turn on the upward. grade-is-not to be looked for till 19-7. This may appear a pessimistic view, but to those who have closely followed the curse of events and registered the curves of price Rugtuations for the last four decules, the grounds for this forecast are ton solid to disregarded.-Angier Brother's Steam Shipping Report,
The following remarks in Angier Bro- shor's steam Shipping Report concerning Che Suez Canal are of interest in view of The recent rumour that the rates were to be reduced in consequence of a rival canal company boing in the field. The report states --The Suez Canal duos and tonnage a world-wide Sueasurements constitute
grievance and hindrance to trade. Even were the London Programme of '83 (a solemn And binding contract) loyally carried out

THE 'AMERICAN SYSTEM
OF
iristead of ruthlessly broken as it has been,DENTISTRY.
the irksome, complicated and antiquated. system of measurements adopted in '73 is constant and unwarranted source of oppres sion to shipping. Lloyd's register of ton- nages supplies all that is required as a basis for assessment, and one accepted by Canals, Ducks, Quays and Ports all over the world, yet this tyrannical nonopolistic trading company forces every ship into heavy and needless expense for a special measurement, and then makes arbitrary changes in this same morsurement. The failure or refusal
f the British Shipowners' nominees on the Board to carry out their trust is Another grievance requiring to be dealt with. But bayond all this the plain fact to-day is that the present magnitude and the yearly in- crease of traffic requires a second canal for its accommodation, and the world's trade peremptorily requires a reasonable rate of toll in place of a toll rendering 26 per cent, annual dividend on an exaggerated capital. A fanca per ton, or even less, rate would pay a handsome rate of interest on the actual cost of a second canal, or to both canals working on an agreement together. Sach a toll would, by its reasonableness, at once cause a vast increase of traffic.

But the bitter weather experienced in the tronches before Port Arthur must have told very severely upon the survivors of Nogi's gallant force. Disease and sickness have been rife ju their ranks and it is too much to expect them to face afresh the rigour of life in the trenches. They have already had their share of the fighting, they have played their part nobly and well, | CHINESE & JAPANESE. CURIO and with this Japan muat for the present be content. Until Nogi has had ample time to recuperate his well-worn battalions, to replenish his shattered runks, Oyanın can expect little help from him.

Whether the Japanese will in the next ensuing campaign add to their victorious achievements time will show, Russia, at all ovents, will have to reckon with a well- seasoned, ably-led, splendidy-disciplined host, with the recollection of a year of triumphe, fresh in their minds. On the whole, both sides will, perhaps, meet in the `spring campaign inore evenly matched. In the year that has closed Japan has had an immense advantage and one that is very often lost sight of..
ARMIES MORE EVENLY MATCHED.
In the campaign in Southern Manchuria she met and fought and conquered an un- ready Russia, a Russia which had trusted to bluff rather than to big battalions, and which, when the moment for action arrived,
sought to stem the advance of the conquer
ing legions of Japan with raw levies, bad- ly officered, badly disciplined, and with little or no lighting spirit.
The new
year will witness an entire alteration. For months Russia has been pouring into Manchuria in a steady stream the dower of her European troops, men who for pluck and courage and doggedness. are fit to compare with the finest soldiers in the world, as they showed on the Shaho. Representatives of this class of Russian and the soldiers of Kuroki have already met on the bloody fields of Linoyang and the Shaho. The Japanese, ever ready to admire brave and chivalrous foc, already speak of these new soldiers of the Tsar as men whe, like themselves, know how to die. It was they who, on the fourth day of the terrible combat at Liaoyang, rushed the bullet-swept rocky eminence called Kur opatkin's Eye' at midnight with the band playing the National Anthem, flung them- selves on the bayonets of the defenders, and captured the hilltop. Their triumph, it was true, was short-lived, but they died like the heroes they were.
HOW.
NEW TYPE OF RUSSIAN SOLDIER.
It led a Japanese officer to remark:-
We have a new type of soldier to face
We have not met him bafowa. Is wonder if there are many more. The answer was furnished at the Shaho, where the Russians fought with a fanatical bra- very which hitherto one had looked for in the Japanese alone. It was at the Shaho that Kuropatkin, for the first time in the whole campaign, ventured upon an offen. His success, at most, was of a negative kind. But if he accomplished nothing, the Japa- neso on their part had nothing to show for
