which showed that the boy had expected to be killed. The crime was committed in August, last year at Bagnères-de-Bigore, where Lafaille had a farm.

Ever since his second marriage Lafaille appears to have shown an extraordinary hatred for the only child of his first wife, and it was stated also that the boy would have benefited to the extent of £6,000 on the death of his father. In his letter tha boy describes how his father and stepmother had systematically starved and persecuted him in the hope of procuring hia denta and saving the money for their own children. Having now learnt that father was about to kill him, he that all he possessed should go to the daughter of a neighbouring farmer

A VILLAGE IN PERIL.

Dangerous Moving Bog.

The recent bog slide in the village of on Lord De Freyne's Cloonchcovers, French Park Estate, in county Roscom mon, has left the tenants on what is por haps the most congested district in Ireland in a pitiable plight.

The devastating results of the last move- mont have left them almost paralysed, and they are awaiting the next avalanche with apparent indifference, fooling that fate will have done her worst when the neighbouring mountain has swept down from them and hidden from view the remainder of the little bog holdings to which they cling with ex- traordinary tenacity.

Some harassing scenes were witnessed re- cently. Pointing to the leafless branches of a tree protruding from a mass of bog stuff, apoor widow said,There is all that is left of my little farm.' House, garden, furni- ture and crops were all buried under hun- dreds of tons of semi-liquid bog.

The island lake has increased to enor mous proportion by the constantly running stream from the mountain, and if nothing is done to draw this off the second movement of the bog must begin soon, and the result must mean tremendous loss of property, if notas is greatly feared-loss of life.

Since this second danger has become imminent the inhabitants have been hour. ly expecting the worst, prepared to some extent to meet it. They are worn out with anxiety and want and deprivation of sleep. The slide may take place in the night, and the doom of the village seems almost inevitable.

Whore the last enormous slide of the bog broke away, the mountain caved in, leav ing a frightful-looking cavern, from which the water and bog matter is boiling up in streams. High over this opening tho heath is piled in rolls and mosses which would require very little impetus to start, in which caso milligas of tons would be poured down on the thickly-populated village below.

The black water from the lake and moun. coin streams is finding its way underneath the bog and gradually but surely weakening. its foundation. It needs no skilled engineer

to discover this. The water-sodden surface

of the bog itself shows it.

To drain this water off will be an expen- sive undertaking. The tenants can little. The work must be undertaken by the landlord-or by the Congested Districts Board, should the landlord agreed to sell to them.

Lord Do Freync is willing to sell to the tenants direct at twenty one and a balf] years' purchase-termas agreed upon for rich fertile land in other parts of the country, where the lives and property of the tenant are not in constant danger from migratory bogs. The tenants have refused the pur. chase direct. They ask that the property be sold to the Congested Districts Board.

So far, all that has been done is that the ounty council has employed some 100 men, working day and night, to open up traffic on the main road between Castlerea and French Park. Those who are destitute through the loss of their crops have been placed on full outdoor relief by the board of guardians, and Lord de Freyne is run. ning up temporary shelters for the tenant whore houses have been swept away.

dral pay $2.000 towards the salary of the Kowloon chaplain, the remainder to be paid by the vestry of the Kowloon church. The post should be held by a married man and he presumed that the salary ought to be near $1,000 in order to enable one to hold the post. The arrangement would be for not less than three years, unless the

Kowloon chapel should undertake the entire support of its own chaplain. When that took place, he hoped the Cathedral would be able to say it could have another assistant chaplain for itself. The passage froin England to Hongkong would be paid.
