THE LONDON UNEMPLOYED.

A mass meeting of unemployed, organ- ised by the London Trades' Council, was held on Dec. 18 in Trafalgar Square. Violent epoaches were made, and resolu tions were carried asking the authorities to provide useful work for those willing to work, and urging the Government to sun men a special session of Parliament with the object of dealing with the question and extending the powera of local authorities.

The London Unemployed Committee, organised by Mr W. H. Long, President of the Local Government Board, have regis- tered the names of over 14,000 applicante for work.

Many demand trade union wages, and are refusing 49. a day. The Committee appear to sympathise with the men'a

ith the men mand. The first batch of the registered unemployed have been sent to the Salvation Army farm at Hadleigh, in Essex.

The Committee have arranged to pay 10s. 6d. per week per man, and to allow the wives remaining at home 10s, a week each, and a small allowance to each child.

Mr Abo Bailey, of South Afrios, has sent General Booth, of the Salvation Army, £1,000 with which to assist the London unemployed.

HELD-UP' IN A LONDON

WAREHOUSE.

One of the most daring robberies that "have occupied the attention of the Metro- politan Police for several years past was skilfully carried out on Saturday afternoon, says the Dady Mail of December 29, amid the bustling activity of Olerkenwell.

Colonel T, J. Stockall, V.D.,' command- ing the 21st Middlesex Rifle Volunteers, one of the partners in the large and old- established firm of wholesale jewellers, Messrs J. J. Stockall and Sons, Limited, was ''ho'd up" in his warehouse by three well-dressed men, who, while pointing a pistol at his head, demanded the keys of the safes in which thousands of pounds worth of jewellery wore stored. The colonel stoutly refused to hand them over, whereupon he was struck down by a blow delivered with a blunt instrument from behind. His legs and arms were

QUR NEW CRUISERS,

Engineering describes the new craisers about to be laid down in the dookyards, and compares them with earlier vessels. The cruisers of the Dridem class have only a 4-in, protective deck, and the thickest armour on the gun positions is 43 in., so that they are absolutely incapable of standing up against a cruiser with a modern 7.in, gun, firing armour-piercing or capped pro- jectles. The first of the County cruisers were little superior, as on the broadside they had Krupp steel only 4 in. thick, and

the largest gun fitted on board was

also in this instance the 6-in."weapon, which is not now reckoned quite satis factory, even as a nucondary gun in eruiners- or warships. The later vessels of this lass were improved by the fitting of a how and stern-chasing 7 5-in, gun, while at the same time the broadside belt was increased in thickness to 6 in. But owing to the recognition of the advance in guy-power the central part of the latest ships and the gun positions are to be armoured with 7-in, and 8-in. carburi ed steel; at the same time the power of the guns has been very They are to be materially increased, fitted with four 9.2 in. and ten 7.5 in. weapons. The guns, too, are to be of greater length

than hitherto

will be of adopted, and therefore higher power than the weapons of corres. ponding calibre fitted in the previous ships. In other words, there will be in the new ships four weapons capable of developing

an energy of something like 25,00 foot-

1ons, or quite five times the energy possible with the 6-in. guns of the Diadem, and ten developing about double the energy of the latter; so that the new cruisers at a range of four miles will be more effective vessels than the Diadems or the oarly Country ve sels at a range of 24 miles. Even at this greater distance the primary guns of the new ships will collectively do more than double

the damage of the fourteen 6-in. weapons in the earlier ships. In fact, one of these new cruisers of the Minotaur class will equal almost any two cruisers of the early County class; others might say that, as regards the Diadem, there is no comparison at all. This makes it the more serious that the Admiralty should reduce the n mber to he buil to three instead of four as authorised he new veerels are to by Parliament. The new s have a speed equal to that of the emaller and less powerful vessels-namely, 23. knots. The machinery will be of the usual four oglinder triple compound type. end- will run at a piston speed of 100 f. per minute when developing full power-27,000 indicated horse-power

The tide table given below has been S. Jame 4 «p. compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office Malate in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of sun nu tomatio tide-recording machine in the Wa. ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 fout

inches below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 fant 1 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inchun to the height given in the table.

Add 24 minut a 18 seconds to the figures given blow to correct to Zone time.
