THE TIBET MISSION,
Interview with Col. Young - Husband.
Router's Representative had an interview with Colonel Younghusband, the Chief of the Political Mission to Lhaas, shortly after that officer'e arrival in England. Colonel Younghusband first expressed his inability to discuss political details, as he had not yet had an opportunity of conferr- ing with the authorities at home.
He con- tinued:-
I may say, in a general way, that a great
point, in my opinion, is the fact, that owing to the magnificent discipline and, good behaviour of the troops, the Tibetan people, when we left
were much
than they
better disposed towar were when we arrived in the sacred city.
As to the results of the Mission, it will be remembered that the removal of obstruction to trade with India was one of its principa objects. This, I am happy to say, is now Bssured, and trade was actually in progress. when I left.
An important point to bear in mind is that the Tibetans are nation of shop- keepers. While the Mission was in the country, Tibetan traders were continually coming in to all our camps and posts to 1376 sell produce and goods. There seems to be every prospect of arthriving trade springing up between India and Tibet,'

Discussing the Convention Colone! Younghusband said:
"It was a very diflicult matter to get the Convention through in the few wooks which Military necessity placed at my disposal, and still more difficult to do this without causing bitterness of feeling among the Tibetans I am happy to say that we' 159 have not left behind us at Lhasa any of that feeling of race animosity which might be very apt to occur under similar circums- tances.

Dealing with the religions aspect of the Mission. Colonel Younghusband marked:-
The that we were allowed into the most snored shrines in Lhasa, and that after the Treaty was signed Captain Conner was received by the Tashi Lama at Shingatse with great ceremony, was sure proof that the walls of religious obstruction which had been raised by the Lamas, and which had hitherto closed the country, had mora or less been broken down. I do not think it
likely they will ever wish to raise them again.
In conclusion, Colonel Youngbushand said:
**I am very appreciative of the support which has been given to me by public opin- ion in England and in Indin, and which so

utmost difficulty, it not of impossibility. A Bedrooms. Monthly Boarders accommodated on very Moderate Terms.
The great desideratum is to get rid of the
lga the flowerless plant or cryptogams which form a greenish scum on the water
and cause it to be objectionable both to
taste and smell:
Dr. Moors obtained from all parts of the laboratory tried the
specimens of alge country, and in his effects of different substances on them. His aim was to dis- cover a substance that, would poison the algae and yet that would not harm the water, and that would be cheap.
Dr Moore found that copper sulphate, familiarly known as blue vitriol, possessed exactly the virtues, he required. Tests showed that a very little of this substance will destroy all alger organisms in a small rank in a few hours and absolutely prevent their recurrence; it dissolves so easily and thoroughly in water that every bit of the copper which does the poisoning is freed to act immediately.
to
This compound proved, in fact, a willing and facile distributor of the copper, as weak solutions as 1 part copper 10,000,000 or 50,000,000 parts of water being powerful enough to kill most of the alge forms.
Tried in reservoir containing 25 million gallons, it proved equally successful. The operation was cheap and easy :
The only apparatus required was some coarse sacks and a rowboat. About 100 pounds of the blue vitriol were placed in the sacks and hung from the stern of the boat. Then the boat was rowed up and down, backward and forward, across the reservoir for several hours, covering every part of the surface in order that the copper should be evenly distributed. The crystals were soon dissolved, and the party re- turned to the shore.
At the end of twenty-four hours the greenish colour began to disappear; At the end of forty-eight hours the green was entirely gone, and the surface was clear, but the water had a light-brown tinge due to the dead organisms held in suspen sion. At the end of the third day the was clear, sweet, and completely

YONSTIPATION, if neglected, often leads to stoppage of the bowels. Bile Beans cure constipation by stimulating the liver to natural action, and in this way they saved Misa Ettie Palmer, of Back 253, Great Colmore Street, Birmingham, Eng- land, from a serious operation in the Queen's Hospital, and probably from death. Miss Palmer says In my case, con- stipation led to a stoppage of the bowel. "I could not take nourishment, and con- sequently grew too feeble to work. Having taken to my bed, I grew weaker and weak- er. It was not thought I should live, In- deed, the clergyman of the parish came to pray at my bedside, so near death was I. The doctor called in a physician, and it was said my own hope of life lay in an operation which might or might not be successful. I was taken to the Queen's, Hospital, and prepared for operation, but at the last! moment my parents stopped all the pro- ceedings and had me taken back home. This was in consequence of what they had heard about the power of Bile Beans, and I was started upon a course immediately. From the first I improved, and in a few days my bowels were acting normally. I gradually got stronger, and in a short time was back at work. Since then I have worked for twelve months, and have nover had a trace of my old complaint. That speaks eloquently for the permanence of Bile Bean cures. I was so weak at the time I was taken to hospital for the opera- tion that I believe I should never have lived through it."
The above sensational facts coming to the ears of a representative of a popular newspaper he at once investigated them He found that interesting as were the details 'given, there was no doubt as to their accuracy. Indeed he discovered that the whole details had been embodied in a "declaration and awrn to before Mr J. Seymour Price, a Birmingham Commie- sioner for Oaths. Thore cabe no doubt that this incident forms one of the most striking proofs obtainable of the value of this great vegetable specific,

SHANGHAI, Jan. 18, The Health Report for Decembar does not present very cheerful reading. Reports the pre- and uncertain as vague valence of smallpox have been rife, and now we are told that there was some cause for their whisperings, and that the deathe among foreigners owing to the dreadful scourge is above the average.
With time, residents seem to become im mune from its terrors; that is to say, to a certain extent, and it is the traveller or non-resident who is more often the victim. Is this not fresh reason why ricksha rules should be altered?
Over three hundred deaths from small- pox have occurred among the Chinese with in the Settlement, some of the men being picked up dead in the strect, and yet day by day wo at our children ride in the same vehicles ich have conveyed men who may be suffering from the disease.

"Dr Gibson (secretary) presented the annual report and balance sheet. He was very glad to see that the hospital was built entirely free from døbt aid to know that on going away for a holiday everything was loft quite clear.
The report states that during 1904 the number of in-patients in the Alics Memor ial Hospital was 491, in the Nethersole Hospital 335, and in the Alice Memorial Maternity Hospital 38. In the Alice Hospital, surgical cases formed 52 per cent. of the whole, opthalmic cases, 31 per cent. and medical cases 17 per cent, while in Nethersole Hospital the surgical cases formed 38 per cent, medical cases 32 per cent, opthalmic 27 per cent and obsteric (including gynacecological) 3 per cent.
