OBSEQUIES OF MR KRUGER.
Ceremony in Pretoria.
Impressive Spectacle.
Pestoria, Dec. 16.—The body of Paul Krliger, the last President of the Transvasi Republic, was consigned to its resting-place to-day with every mark of respect, not only from his old followers, but also from his former enemies,
The sky this morning was dull, and over- cast with heavy white clouds, against which the hills surrounding the ospital stood out brilliantly green after the newly-fallan rain. In the town itself all the shops were closed and the flags at half-mast, in token of mour ning.
Everywhere there were great crowds and the Market Squaro was packed with unkempt and roughly-olad Burghers from Johannesburg who had been brought hither by cheap excursion trains, and who passed the hours of waiting in the bars of the public houses. Everywhere, too, were important-looking members of the Com-
mittee.
Uniformed soldiers of the former Staats Artillery mounted guard at the Suzaana Zaal, where the body of the ex-President lay in State upon a bier. The hall was lighted but dimly by shrouded electroliers. During the early part of the day thousands of reverent sightseers passed rapidly before the coffin, to offer their last tribute of respect.
The funeral orations delivered at the old church in which Mr Krüger was at one time so familiar a figure, were wholly correct in

Shortly after midday great crowds began to gather opposite the rostrum, which had been erected in Church-square for the accommodation of the Chief mourners and speakers, and along the whole route of the funeral procession. By half-past three dense masses of people were pressing against the carriers but they were admimbly controlled and held in check by the South African Constabulary.
At that hour a curiously interesting group entered the rostrum. It included Generala Botha, Delarey, and De Wet, Mr Schalk-Burger, and Mr Esselen. Me Schalk-Burger's oration was colourless,

able number of his quondam enemies— guarded, too, by British soldiers, in un- iform but unarmed the body of Paul
Krüger was borne to the grave to the wailing strains of the Dead March, and amid a pomp and ceremony to which, in life, the rugged Leader was a stranger.
The scene in the graveyard, where the ex-President was laid to rest beside the body of his wife, was extremely simple, and, for that very reason, moving and pathetic throughout. Only the members Of the
family
and a very few privileged
persons were admitted to the
ne ceremony. but a multitude of curious natives had gathered on the Northern outer barriers, Opposite them the European spectators had formed up in orderly masses, and over their heads it was possible to catch a glimpse of the guns of the Royal Artillery, shronded every minute by the white, drifting smoke that accompanied the firing of the last salute.
The prayers offered up at the graveside were few and short, and the entire core. mony was marked by a true Dopper absence of ritual. The bod was at last. lowered into the vault that bad boen pra- pared, and as the crowd broke up to return home, the rays of the setting sun struggled through the curtain of mist which had enveloped it all the day.
Not the least striking feature of the cur ious and deeply interesting ceremony was the perfect discipline that provailed. Surely no more orderly crowed had ever fore- gathered to mourn and honour a lost Chief. The fact may be regarded as a good omen for the future of South Africa. The Boors who are now treaking back to the great Velde, and the cheap trippers who are returning to the Rand, have had an impres Bive objectlesson, and will,
to be hoped, enter upon in the words of 563 Christian De Wet a new epoch, with new
ideals on a new principle-

Banks-Hongkong and Shanghai Banks have ruled strong all through, and a good business has been done at advancing rates from to $705 to 8715, the market closca firm with buyers at $715, owing to the advance in the London quotation to £76. Nationals are unchanged at $38.
Marine Insurances.-Unions continue in demand at $700. Cantons are quict at $250, while Yangtszes and China Traders are wanted at $150 and 258 respectively.
Fire Insurances, Stocks under this heading have not experienced any change since last writing. Both Hongkong Fires and China are steady at quotations,-the former at $340 and the latter $91.
Shipping.-Hongkong, Canton and Macao Steamboats have changed hands at 8261, $263, $27 closing with sellers at the latter rate. Indo-Chinas have been done forward slightly more than the equivalent rates for cash, at the close the market is firm at $124.
