Prosper Merimés said that he was terrible only to his own enjoota and, as a matter of fact he did in his youth some useful fighting against the Tartars, though short work was mado him when he came into collision with King Stephen Batory of oland M. Waliszew- aki expresses in more than one place a feeling of tendernem fer Ivan IV., which reminds us of the pity felt by Sir Arthur Helps (in his Iyan de Biron') for the Empress Elizabeth, who, after ordering

general barbarity of the age he adorned, and of the special barbarity of the country whose power, prosperity, and civie lisation he is said to have advanced, Ivan took a personal

onal delight in the tortures he inflicted, and, Ba Mr. Waliszewski himself

points out, was a connoisseur in cruelty. Yet, savage as he may have been, he ought not, for good linguistic and excellent his-- toric reasons, to have been called by

this cruel man was nothing more than stern, because such was his popular de- signation, is like saying that Henry VIII

The tales, traditions, and popular nice- dotes concerning Ivan IV, throw much more light on his charac and

his own people thought him capable of, than any one epithet could do. M. Wali, szewski says it is untrub that, after causing the Church of St. Basil the Blessed to be built, with its half-picturesque, half-grotes que adornments of artichokes, melons, onions, and pine-apples, the Czar Ivan blinded the architect in order that he should not reproduce his supposed master- piece elsewhere. But it is not untrue that this was the Russian tradition on the sub- ject, Ivan, whose habitual walking stick was a heavy one, with a spike at the end, would, according to another legend, eug- age a friend in conversation, and to ensure his attention run the spiko in-

to his foot. A first-rate practical joke, BRASS BEDSTEAD with WIRE and Hammoreover, is attributed to him in con- MATTRESSES, Teakwood ExtenSION. DINING

But the Tristan sent out by the Muscovite Sovereign to seo, and, if necessary, bring back this new Isolde, while praising the lady's face, disapproved of her figure. She was not fat enough.

M. Waliszewski's book is thoroughly interesting. But if his volume is easy to read, its author is hard to understand. He sets out with some show of indignation to prove that Ivan, mitcalled the Terrible' and the Cruel, has been shamefully maligned, and then gives a long and detail. ed account of his acts of cruelty, many of them so hideous, so revolting, that the reader cannot but admit the propriety of the author's formal apology for describing such things He speaks in more than one place of the Russian's admiration. of brvie force and material greatness, as though he himself shared this feel. ing; and while contrasting the mildness of Polish with the severity of Russiau methods of government, points out that if the latter succeeded where the former failed, it has been just because Russia has not been too dainty as to her methods.' TRAINING NOTES.

There was a good muster of ponies on the course this morning, but the attendance of sightseers was smaller than usual. Fair work was indulged in, one or two of the ponies making a good impression. Mr Japp's sub. after going for a fair gallop

finished the last quarter in fast time. Mr Mody's sub. also went very well over a mile, and the same owner's Derby pony cut out fast final quarter.

These filtering cylinders are like thick candles, and are composed of a special perous sub stauce, which, it is stated, is unrivalled for purifying water. The water passes through these filters, thence into slate tanks, of which there are four with a total capacity for 3,000 gallons. Whon the water is in the tanks it is clear and pellucid and abso. lutely pure. From the tanks the water finds its way through pure tin pipes into a refrigerator. The temperature of the water is considerable reduced by the time it emerges from the refrigerator and. it is then ready for æration.
