SATURDAY

From Bornco comes the story of a blood- thirsty raid made by a party of natives on Lahad Datu, the headquarters of the Darvel Bay Tobacco Company. On De

13 cember 6 a party consisting of one Pala, a Sulu, and oighteen men armed with the terrible barong, a heavy knife sharpened to a razor edge, about eighteen inches long started from Sekar Teland. The motive of the raid is to be found in the loss of one of Fala's alaves, who escaped and found his way into the hands of the authorities at Lahad Datu, Thoy paddled to the back of the Chinese shops built on the water's edge and the leader went up to the house of the Magistrate, Mr Lovegrove, and while talking with him sa touching the slave, was asked if his men had been dis- armed. His answer was not satisfactory, and the Magistrate sont his clerk and a police corporal to ask Pala's men to give up their arms.

MARRIAGE MAZE,

Amusing Case in an English Court.

The marriage relations of James Browne, an Army ponsioner, presented so complicat ed a network of intricacies that the justices at the Hertford Quarter Sessions spent many vain hours on November 18th in the endeavour to puzzle

out. them The case, says the London Daily Express, hung on the interesting point whether Browne married his sunt or not. Browne was brought up for sentence on a charge of neglecting his wife and six children,' an offence for which it appears he has been provicusly convicted. He himself throw the first bombshell when he said three of the children were his and three his wife's, The chief constable of St. Albans added fuel to the flame. He declared that Browne ran away from his wife; went to live with his aunt, married her, and had three children.

“What !' said the clerk of the peace. Left his wife and married his aunt! Get

Prayer-book |'

While the justices were consulting the Prayer-book, the wife was cross-examined. She still further complicated matters. Her name, she said, was Sara Ann Fordell.' Though Browne had been convicted of assaulting her, she declared he had never treated her badly.

'Are you his aunt?' said the solicitor.

My first husband was his mother's bro-

ther,' was the reply.

A justice in the meantime had, after, minute study of the Prayer-book, found that if there was any consanguinity this woman was not prisoner's wife.

More complications' said a solicitor. If she is not Min Browne, he has com- mitted no offence, and has been improperly Bentenced on previous occasions, and deprived of his Army pension.'

The certificate of Browne's 'second mar- riage was produced, and the Court mis. sionary declared that he was the person who advised them to marry, thinking thoro was no legal impediment. The clerk declared that any marriage between them was abso lutoly valueless. The solicitor thereupon brought forward more complications to worry the already harried justices.

Can a man,' he asked, take advantage

of his own wrong-doing 1 If this marriago be illegal Browne is at liberty to desert the woman or do as he pleases."

6

nn-

Then brilliant idea struck Sir John Evans, and his brother justices smiled upon

•We will remand him,' he said, him. til the adjourned sessions."

But he was not to escape so lightly. The ndefatigable solicitor had another complica. tion ready. Browne had been found guilty | in the police court and sent there for

sentence.

Can you,' asked the solicitor triumphant ly, reverse the decision of the Court below?'

But the justice had been puzzled enough. Browne was bound over until the adjourned quarter sessions for inquiries to be inado,

A KINDLY PUBLIC OFFICER. Some months ago a letter from Rai Maya Das, R.B., Magistrate of the First Class and, Manager of the Mamdoto Estate in the Ferozepore District, Punjab, was received in London, by the proprietors of Mother Seigel's Syrup, in which the writer ordered some of the Syrup to be sent to him at Farozepore, and mentioned that a boy in the camp bail been radically cared of disorders by using the Syrup. The English firma wrote to Mr Hal Mava Das, asking for some farther information, and these are the letters he sent in reply..

THE MAGISTRATE'S "LETTER.

The Nest, Ferozepore,

September 19th, 1001.

A. J. White, Ltd., London.:: Dear Sira, With reference to your letter dated London, 26th July, 1904, I have the plea- sure to enclose a certificate from the father of the boy who was completely cured, as it came under my personal observation; therefore I can testify with confidence that the accompany- ing certificate is a genuine one. It is written in the Hindustani language, and I have trans- Jated it for you and it speaks for itself..

I have since been recommending this won- derful Syrup to people far and near, for I remain often out in camp. I always travel with a bottle of the Syrup in my box and have already used 9 bottles out of the dozen I bought from you in May last. Both my wife and I (and we have 14 children) use it freely when any one of us is out of sorts, and it acts like a charm. My wife has been suffering from wheezing cough and catching breath for years together, and she thought it was asthma, but I thought it was the liver, and so gave her a few bottles, and now she is as well as she can be, going easily up and down the stairs--for merly it was a real trial for her to go up a single step

Please send me this time another, dozen or even two dozen, if there is any saving in it. Thanking you in anticipation and also for your

past kindness in complying with my request

AMOK ON THE TREMONT.'

·MURDEROUS FILIPINO,

KILLS ONE COMPANION AND

WOUNDS ANOTHER.

The Murderer Escapes.

The harbour was the scene of a shocking tragedy last night shortly after 10 o'clock, when a murder was enacted on board the steamer Tremont.

The crime was surrounded with the most sensational details, and the murderer, after aecuring one victim, attempted the life of a companion who came to his rescue, and wounded him very seriously. Both the murdered man and his assailant wore Filipinos, 81 of whom were steerage passengers by the Trimant from the United States, where they were assisted to go by the American Government to attend the St. Louis Exposition, and were in charge of Mr Fettit from the Philippines.

During the voyage it is said that the Filipinos have been rather troublesome and have onused a great deal of worry to the men in charge of them and last night their behaviour became so bad that the American had to remain up all night, to keep order. It does not appear to bo known what the immediate cause of the trouble was, but it culminated in one of the Filipinos, named Pagain, cowardly attack ing another, named Apowen, while he was lying in his bunk, with a long Filipino knife and doing him to death.

The man attacked was asleep at the time 'the murderque assault was made upon him and was mortally wounded before he could offer any resistance. It is said the mur derer drove the long blade into his victim's chest and wrenched it after the manner of Jack the Ripper.

SPORTING.

Cricket.

Now that the holidays are finished with, sport in the Colony will settle down to ita accustomed groove. The wind up to the cricket match between the Club and the Garrison last week was a sensational one, and H. Hancock's exceptionally fine driving strokes will long be remembered. For the time being the bowling looked farcical, but the inevitable end camo; Hancock was caught. The bowling of Major Chichester was brillians and he tuc ceeded in securing the coveted bat-trick. To-morrow the Club meet the Nary and from the personnel of the Clab team it seems as if the Navy will have to surpass themselves to win..

The game will are the players representing the Club :-- commence at 11.30 am. The following R. Hancock, H. Hancock, Wm. Dixon, T. 8. Smith, A. G. Ward, R. E. 0. Bird, T. E. Pearce, C. H. Mackay, W. Daniel, Lt. Airy and Lt. Heath.

The Club is now fairly on its feet, and races will take place the follow- ing day. The two boats just built by Ah King have been launched, and have been named the Waratah and Cam respectively. The Commodors of the Cub, Dr. Clark, has ordered a boat, which is being builtby Ah King, Mr F. Gibson is also having one built, and Ah King has also get the order. So far Ah King has built four out of the five boats completed, and ho seems to have put some excellent work into them. AXATINE is the mildest aperient known. It is pleasant in taste, not drastic but certain in action and even in large doses is harmless. Lazatine being non-irrit abla will be found a great boon, to ladies especially, and in cases where the kidneys are irritable or diseased. Laxatine is strongly recommended by the Continental Authorities and is being largely used in the London hospitals. Messrs A. S. WATSON & Co.
