THE ART OF ADVERTISING.

'Profitable Advertising' is a subject with which Ashby Goodall deals in a recent nuin. ber of The Magazine of Commerce. He say in the course of his article, in referring to shipping :—'Records of quick passages, tha comfort and steadiness of certain boats aTU among the more elementary facts that might easily be made use of. Again, there is room for creative advertising in shipping circles. There are numbers of men' with money, and leisure who might easily be induced to visit South Africa, America, &c., and incidentally to swell the revenue of the teamship companies. A full boat at slightly reduced rates would be more pro ductive from the owner's point of view thin a boat balf full, Why will not some of the companies try it at slack seasons of the year Nominally, loving people; in reality, few of us .over go to go. Why do not the shipowners take advantage of this trait in the national character, and impress on the public the great fact that there is no holi day like a sea voyage, to, cay, Morocco Cape Town, or Canada and back, and that it is, when all is said and done, less expen. sive than a prolonged stay at a fashionable watering place

.

we are..& CA

Profitable advertising is an undoubted art and one well worthy the study not only of the great stanchions of commerce but ra tail merchants. It is not a question of very large type or oven of prominent position which makes an advertisement successful: it is the affording of information which the public wants to know. Tom Jones may fancy he has fulfilled his destiny as an ad- vertiser when he has announced on a neat -card in the right-hand top corner of some local sheet that he is a dispensing chemist. This is a fact which the new comer probably grasps on the way from the cailway station or steamer, therefore hardly neeĝs to be told, while to the old resident it is as timeworn a truth as that B follows A in the alphabet. What the public would like to know is whether the long overdue invoice of chlorodyne or codliver oil has arrived. or whether a new panacea for rheumatism, gout or face ache has made its appearance, without being compelled to write numberless chits or make a personal visit of enquiry on the subject. The fre quent complaint of advertisers that 'adver- tisements are no use' is largely due to the advertiser's own negligence or failure to grasp what, where and how to advertise. Successful advertising does not always lie in an announcement being laid before the largest number of people, but in reaching the right class of people; the people who really read papers, and the people with money to spend.

CANTON, Dec, 27.

About a year ago, Li Ka Cheuk, a mili- tary official here, was found guilty of embezzling certain sums of inoney connect ed with the Wei-sing lottery, and also allowing his soldiers to ill-treat the people, probably with his connivance, certainly without his interfence, The present Viceroy cashiered him, and sent him on to Peking to be tried by the military authoritics there and pay the penalty of his crimes.

It appears that he managed, by the skil. fal use of his wealth, to escape any severe -treatment, and recently, on the occasion of the birthday of the Empress, she forgavo- him, and reinstated him to his forgor rank, and emoluments. The stranger walking through the Settlement would notice nothing beyond the usual out. ward apathy on the part of the Chinese, but deep resentment is bubbling beneath their quiet demeanour. An extract translated from a Chineso paper gives the information that a demonstration of 250,000 men was to parade in arranged. They wore frout-of-the-Ningpo Guild, and it was only the concerted action of a few influential natives which averted a gathering which might have assumed a nasty aspect. The paper goes on to state that the victim was a Ningpo man on his Way to
