U. 9. OFFICER'S LOVE AFTAIRS.

Washington, Nor, 17. Secretary Taft sent in letter to day to Lieutenant Colonel W. L. Pitcher, Twenty-eighth Infantry at the Presidio, which will make that officer's cara tingle. The letter is the closing in- aident in a case which attracted much attention come months ago, in which Colonel Pitcher was accused of having heartlessly jilted Miss Caroline Harold, to whom he was

matter be dropped without further publicity. On this account Colonel Pitcher is let off with a sharp

reprimand. Secretary Taft decided not to

make the letter public, as he is anxious

that the matter should be dropped for the 1376 | good of all concerned."

Pitcher was engaged to marry Miss Karold, who was a clerk in the War De-

partment. She resigned her

her place in anticipation of the wedding, and for some unknown reason Pitcher broke the engage ment in such a manner as to bring forth strong criticism from the Department and his brother officers. When called to ad count for his action Pitcher wrote the let

west by Philadelphia, on the east by OFFICE: No. 36, QUEEN'S ROAD CENTRAL, Boston, and on the north by Newburgh, N. Y.

The big brokerage concerns in Wall Street, many of whom, under normal con- ditions, operate thousands of miles of wire, to-day found themselves were no more fortunate and the only quotations received from Chicago and New Orleans were the press market reports. These quotations were the only figures obtained from the cotton and grain contres of the South and West.

By an elaborate system of relays and the ́use of both telephone and telegraph wires the Associated Press succeeded in bridging the path between East and West cut by the storm and reached all points west, north and east with the exception of a section in the vicinity of Albany. Thore the damage from the snow and wind seem- ed beyond immediate ropair, and, with the exception of trains, there was no com- munication with that section during the day.

The general eakdown of wires was also responsible for trouble on the railroads. The movements of trains could not be re ported, and dolays extending into hours

in many cases were reported.

That no more disasters at sea resulted. from the gale probably was due to the early warning of the approaching hurricang sent out by the Weather Baronu.

Bulletins

sent out on Saturday afternoon told of the gale that would sweep the coast, and cautioned all mariners against leaving port. The chief damage attributable to the storm was the crippling of telephonic, tele- graphic and electric light service through. oat northern and eastern New England. One of the most singular effects of the gale was reported from Hennellville, Me., where a whale eighty feet long was blown ashore. Unable to get back into deep water, the great creature lay helpless on the beach and a bullet from a hunter's rifle ended its life. Clear and cold weather followed in the wake of the storm.

the Chicago brokers to-day resorted to extraordinary expedients in their efforts to establish communication with their New York offices. More than a 'dosen messages were sent by way of San Fran- cisco, Honolulu, Yokohama, and thence around the world. But no replies were, received in time to be of value for to-day's trading. In other instances messages were dispatched to New York by the twenty: four-hour flyer, which leaves Chicago after noon, the hope being that the fast train would be able to reach the metropolis before the opening of the Stock Exchange in the morning. Still another expedient was to telegraph orders to Rochester or Buffalo, in which cities the wires were in operation, and these orders were mailed to New York city.

It was the most complete tie-up of wire Bervice that the Stock Exchange has known in the last sixteen years. It was a nerve- racking day for the traders. Thore was no way to tell which prices were going up or down, and if it had been known there would have been no way of stopping the There was long or of taking profits. absolutely no trading during the day bet ween. AN ORCHESTRAL CONCERT.

Band of The Furst Bismarok.

One of the few really good band concerts that has been listened to in Hongkong took place at the City Hall last evening, whón the band of S.M.S. Furst Bismarck, under Bandmaster Stabshobojat G, Stolle, mocess fully performed a selection of classic musical gems. The attendance was large, not a vacant seat was to be had in the Drass Circle, while the body of the hill was also well filled. Promptly at 9 o'clock the overture,Weber's Oberon, that sweet composition o

soothing and soft, was pinyed

in an admirable manner, and was followed

by the Chotus of Pilgrims in Tannhauser (Wagner). The band played in excellent anison, and skilfully interpreted the emo they gave universal satisfaction and were tional passages. Throughout the evening applauded for every item given. Schubert's Moments Musical" is an exquisite com position and was finely rendered. The close of the first part of the programme, Wagner's Introduction to Act III of Lohengrin, was one of the best pieces of the evening, and the enthusiastic ap- plause necessitated an encore. Band- master Stelle chose Mansfield's Vorsgiel,, (II Act. Pfeiferkonig), and his choice was well placed. The audience were enrap, tured and at the conclusion a loud burst of applause rang out. In the second part the same successful and sympathetic treatment was given to all the selections, the best of all being Entract Mignon (Thomas) and Greig's Ass's Death (Peer Gynt, Suite 11), performed by the String Quartettes. has a beautiful opening, full of sweetness, The first of these, which is very catching,

HERR FRIEDENTHAL.

Interesting Reminiscences,

As briefly announced in yesterday's issue

In the course" of an address Mr Lewis said that there were two things which had to be done that evening, viz., to propose the healths of the departing members of the staff and to present Mr Ordish, on behalf of all the employees, with a hand. some gold watch as a memento of his eter- ling ability as a chief and friend. He ex pressed the wish that the three gentlemen whose health he was proposing would have continual good health and prosperity.

establish himself as heir against Badshah Khan, his elder brother. Several times- during the past summer an open quarrel between the two had threatened, and a few weeks ago Mian Gul Jan shot Saiyid Bakir Jau, a friend of his father the Nawab, who waited until the Chitral reliefs had been carried out and then sent Badshah Khan with a lashkar (armed force) to turn his brother out of Munda. The latter escaped and fled to Nawagai where he persuaded the Khan to support his cause, bribing him with a promise to cedo Munda to him.

The Khan moved off with a force and fight- ing followed, in which he was beaten back. Meanwhile the Khan of Nawagal has been ordered by the British authorities to with- draw his forces as the quarrel is one with THE CHARTERED BANK OF INDIA, per annum on the daily balance which he has no concern. So far the only satisfactory feature of the business is that Mian Gul Jan has been driven out of Dir territory. A later telegram states that order has now been restored in Dir, where fighting was recently going on between the two sons of the Nawab. The younger, who seems to have been the aggressor, has been

The result was simply marvellous. The pilla (which are tonic, not purgative) begadSWIRE. to take effect almost at onco. I had only taken a very few doses when the desire for food returned. My appetite daily im proved my strength returned, and I had still part of my first bottle deft when I was completely built up again and able to follow my business as usual. Now I feel as well as ever I did.

No speedier nor more striking cure than mine could possibly be desired.'

Mr Jones, now living at the Recreation Tavern, Hobson-street, Bolton, England, gave these facts to the representative of the Bolton Chronicle.
