THE [BURGOMASTER OF

VIENNA

A scene almost unparalleled for vulgarity Land demagogie impudence, even in this country of crazy Parliamentarism, tosk place to-day in the Diet of Lower Austria,♬ The partisans of Dr Lueger, the Burgo master of Vienna, brought in an urgency motion attacking the police and the Premier on account of the prohibition of the projec- tod Anti-Semitic and Clerical torchlight | procession in honour of the Burgomaster's 60th birthday. The urgency motion accused the of having as had often been the capitulated to the impudent ter- rorism of Social Democracy,- and of having

thereby given proof of shameful cowardice.* Needless to say, this motion was carried amid loud demonstrations in honour of Dr Lueger, who surpassed all his fol lowers in the unmentionable vulgarity of his language Moro significant than the vulgarity were, however, the re- peated assertions of the Anti-Semitio and Clerical Deputy-assertions to which no exception was taken by the Provincial Marshal, Abbot Schmelk, who was in the chair-that the reason for the prohibition of the torchlight procession was

the jealousy caused in the highest circles by the popularity of Dr Lueger. As was in- 1376 evitable, the Government were accused of having yielded to Jewish pressure and the Social Democrats of having boon bribed by the Court These accusations were under- jined with uproarious applause from the Clerical Anti-Semites in the hall and in the gallery. The applause was renewed, with delirious enthusiasm when Dr Lueger, with inimitable effrontery, assured the House that he was not jealous of the Emperor and repudiated the supposition that he envied the reverence and affection which

TOMVITY OF THE JAPANESETE The Japanese have in no wise abated their activity in this province of Fukien, | whether in reference to their nonopoly of the Camphor Industry or in map making. One hears of them in all sorts of out-of-the way places, travelling to and fro in a quies unobstructive way. BOXERS IN YUNNAN.

Tricks of an Alleged Goddess.

This plague has reached us at last anys the Chaotung (Yunnan) correspondent of the N.-O, Daily News. A few months ago Living Goddess of Marcy made her ap- pearance in the north of the Chaptung pre- fecture. She resided in the house of a coir worker named Ting and stated that she was a member of the famous Red Lantern sect, which caused so much trouble in Szachuan

a for years ago. She scattered her cards in all directions and began teaching Boxer mysterics to a number of people, All whe joined her in fact had to provide a military outfit and a flag.

*As the Manchus have hitherto failed to -drive out the foreigners the Gem Emperor had issued a decree appointing Ting King of Yunnan and giving to him the works of destroying all foreigners. In addition to the forces he gathered from the neighbour. hood he was to be assisted by a magic army of twelve gallons of hemp-seed soldiers and thirty-four gallons of yellow bean soldiers. These, when scatter on the ground like the seed which mighty Jason sowed, were to spring up as well-armed men and then woe to all foreignera.

The 19th of the 9th moon was fixed "as the date of the rising. The whole country- side knew of the matter, but the spies sent out by the officials failed to discover it. When the fated day came, the Feast of the Goddess of Mercy, the clans gathered, and the yellow standards were erected, bearing the legend By command of the Gem. Emperor Destroy all Foreigners.' Accord- ing to an old Chinose military custom a uncrifice was to be offered to the Ang What sacrifice more welcome to the gods than the body of a Christian! The bands went in search of a Protestant Christian living not far away; met him on the road, soized him, and gave him the choice of idolatry or death. He refused the former and they gave him the latter. After killing him, they cut off his head and cast his body into a ditch. The blood was then genttered on the standard and the head hung up in triumph. The die was cast.

Mr Leo, a Chinese B.A., who is pastor of the work in that district, as soon as he was assured of the truth of the story, did his best to move the local officials.

The following table is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer sailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australia. Coast ports, Manila, and Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports. the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to those vessels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & 0. mails usually reach London in about 28 days, and the French and German in about 28 or 30 days.

The

Der.

highest military officer there is a lieutenant, and he has only three or four soldiers under him. There has been a wholesale cashiering of small military officials and soldiers, leaving many of the districts practically defenceless.

Lieutenant White started off with his handful of men and gathered up'a band of. militin by the way. The captain of the militia is a Christian and not afraid of the magic of the Living Goddess. On arriving at the stockade built on a dangerous cliff, the rebels were summoned to surrender with a promise of life if they did so. And they not remembered how Chinese always keap auch promises, they were still too ́sure of their magic, soldiers tamely to give in to such a small force. A volley from within and the death of one of White's men was the reply. The fighting went on imore or less all day, and at last the stock. ade was set on fire. The rebels rushed out to escape the flames and many were cut down. The king ended his short reign,- and instead of remaining as he had boasted firmly seated on the 'Throne of the Nine Dragons,' went to reside beneath the Waters of the Nine Fountains.' The Living Goddess perished in the flames. All the wonderful leaders in this great rebel- lion found their careers cut short.

Such is the story as far as I know it of the first Boxer Rising and of the first. Pro- testant martyr in Yünnan. This experi ence does not at all exhaust the troubles of this far-west province.
