only are a great many tram lines, and service lines of various descriptions using - cast steel, but most of the tube and under. -ground railways of the heavier service kind are investing in them also. Mr Yerkes, who is electrifying the District Railway, will have nothing but cast steel for motor trucks. Ho would. Alan use it for trial trucks, only that the cheaper material would answer the purpose fairly well in their ove; and he did not see the necessity of paying more money for the cast-steel truck under these circumstances,
A DIFFICULT FIAT,
Lifting a 7600-Ton Bullding. There has just been completed, in' what is known as the flooded district of Brooklyn, one of the most remarkable and successful pieces of engineering over attempted in the United States, if not in the world. The *feat consisted in raising from its foundation to a height of 24in. the building known as Public School Nr. 85, at Ever- green avenue and Covert a rest, This structure whic is of brick, mesures 150 by 84 feet along the bana line, is four storeya high, contains 31 class rooms, and weighs about 75 C-tons, or 16,800,00016,
The preparations for this huge venture were begun by digging a trench 8 ft. wide, around the building, to the depth of the foundation, and placing heavy yellow pine timbera, running parallel with the walls,
in it.
Above the entrenched timbers, and on either side of the foundation walls, were built the cribbing blocks of various dimen- sions, unon which were placed the jack screws, and resting thereon were the screw- ing timbers. Upon these wore placed, at right angles with each other, the cross- timbers and top-sticks, the lastnamed carrying the beams of the building. After the above-described raft was built, actual work of raising began.
Seventy-five men, selected for the pur- pose, were sent into the foundation, and were there divided into small ganga upon the different sections of cribbing, each gang patrolling its own section. In single file the men followed each other, giving each of the
1200 screws a quarter turn,
In this manner the 200 jack-screws wore operated, and the massive structure lifted safely to the desired height, and securely held until the new foundation was built un- der it. The average weight lifted by each of the 75 men was 100 tons, or 220, 001b,
The lifting of the building was deemed necessary by the New York Board of Educa tion, to prevent the flooding of the lower part of the building which has been very frequent, especially after a heary rain.

MAIL STEAMER DEPARTURES.
The following table, is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer sailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australia. Coast ports, Manila, and Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports. All the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to those vessels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & O. mails usually reach London in about 28 days, and the French and German in about 28 or 30 days.
