As the explanation contains a spioe of flattery, and was given by a mother when her little girl asked the reason of the custom, it cannot be set down to male pre Judice. The day opened bright and cloar, with a cool easterly wind blowing up the harbour, which freshened considerably with the flood tide. The raco commenced at dead low water, so that there was a beat down to the byemun Beacon from the Cust Rock; considerable judgment was there. fore necessary in choosing the best course, Some beats went for the slack water on the Quarry Bay side, and some went for the JEWELLERY DEALER AND GOLD free puffs coming off the north shore of the harbour whore, however, more tido WAS running against them.
The Championship class were all present at the start, and Elspeth quickly showed to the front, but at Blackhead's Pier she was passed by the Vernon and Dione. From this point the Dione; with her beautiful new Lapthorne sail perfectly stretched, and with every inch of it doing good work to windward, rapidly clawed away from the other busts and won easily. Only half of the Aileen's sail scemed to be drawing in working to windward, and she did not
go well in confequence. Times at finish :—

In this race neither the Alannah nor the Iris were in their usual form, the former probably because her new sail is not suffi ciently strutched for working to windward. The Payne also was sometimes overpowered by the strong puffs and did not sail so well
