The Duke never forgave him, and, though he had made his protege a Yeuman of the Guard, he took away his patronage and left Broughton to grow rich alone at bis theatre off Oxford-street. There he fought until he died, and was carried to his grave by five pugilists appointed by him- self. He has a niche in fame as the father

of prize-fighting in England, and it is sure- ly the strongest claim that

The

And, Betty, give this cheek a little

Pope makes her say, and the actress was laid in her coffin decked with Brussels lace | and wearing now kid gloves. The preacher in the Abbey buried her, he told the moumers, 'very willingly and with much sutisfaction !'

Under the seat in which he sat so many years lies strange old Peter Heylin, "the sub-dean whose quarrels with the dean were the scandal of Westminster. When the aquabble about the ownership of the great-pew, the seat of highest honour, came to an end, Peter won, and Dean Williams had his cars nailed to the pillory and went for three years to the Tower. He came back one day when Peter was preaching, and, led by six bishops into the Abbey, be took his sent, banged his stick on the ata of the foor, and cried out: No more on that point, Peter' so insistently that Peter

had to stop.

3

But the incongruities of the Abbey are -endless, and we must break up our mixed assembly. Here and there, not to be counted on one or two hands, are graves of little children. The oldest inhabitant of the Abbey is (1) 152 years : the youngest is one day old. The little son of Henrietta Maria,

the exiled Queen and Charles I., was born, christened, and buried in one day. Beside him lies his sister of four. The first child buried in the Abbey was dumb, the little daughter, five years old, of Henry III. ♦Jane Lister, dear ide,' is one of the touchingly simple inscriptions to be found in the cloisters. Jane was a little girl of ive, whose father was a queen's physician. "Nicholas Bagenall,' we read on another ablet. Nicholas died in 1688; he was two months old, and his heart was placed in an urn, Twenty-five years after, his mother came to the Abbey, never to leave it until the dead awake.

Prometheus."

Judgment in Favour of the Charterers.

At the Supreme Court this afternoon Hi Lordship Sir H. §. Berkeley, Acting Chief Justics, delivers judgment in case of the Osaka Show Kaliha pet owners of the Prometheus?!!".

The judgment was a dongthy one, and His Lordship took one hour and five minutes to deliver it.

The case was one in which the Osaka Shosen Kaisha proceeded against the owners of the Prometheus for damages for a breach of a charter in refusing to carry provisions and timber, which the owners declared were contraband but which the charterers contended were not. The Osaka Shosen Kaisha chartered the Prometheus from Messrs Sander, Wieler and Company. ou behalf of the owners, for six months. Be: fore the charter expired, a dispute arose which was submitted to arbitration. The arbitrator, Mr E. A. Hewett, left three questions for the decision of the Court and it was for this decision that the parties brought the cass into the Suprams Court,

The questions were:---

(1) Whether under the terms of the Russian declaration the cargo intended for shipment from Yokohama and Kobe to Kagoshima, Okinawa, Keelung, Anping and Tokio by the Prometheus was contra band. If so, whether the Russian declaration in this respect is binding upon neutrals or

whether it is ultra vires.

(2) Whether the line upon which the Osaka Shosen Krisha wished to employ the Prometheus was a 'privilegéd' line, and, if so, was it unlawful for neutral ships to en gage in such a tride."

the risk apprehended mut so direct as to render the almost certain. In the present = que the master had no grounds-what- ever for entertaining much apprehensions, His Lordship did not believe that the mister entertained such belief; the point wis taken for him after the case was in the arbitrator'a handa.

A special care must be submitted to the arbitrator, concluded His Lordship, who will be guided by the anawers I have made to the questions given.

IDNEY DISEASE, when it reaches the point of curing sudden collapse, as in the case of Mr Mark Young, landlord of the Victoria Hotel, Victoria-street, Southwick, Sunderland, England, is nothing more or less than poisoning of the blood. The overworked kidneys fail to clear the blood, and the blood becomes impur.

There is only one cure, and that is to clear out the pulaon by giving new blood to the veins. Dr Williams Pink Pills for Pale People have precisely this power. That is the secret of their cures. Whatever dis- esses arise from too little blood, a blood | that lacks richness and purity, they can oure, just as surely as food cures hunger. Blood la the food of the body: Dr. Wil liams' Pink Pills are the food of the blood. The genuine pills always boar Dr Williams' nams, substitutes are useless and fraudulent. Dr Williams' Medicine Company, Holborn Viaduct, London, will send a bottle post free for 28. 9d. (or six bottles for 18s. Bd.): bat they can be had at medicine shops provided purchasers insit (it is often necessary to insist) on having the genuine and on "refusing any substitute. It is by making new blood that they cure anmmis, bile, consumption, dedine, indigestion, St. Vitus dance: it is by making pure blood that they cure rheumatism, kidney disease, ecsoma, and all shin troubles. They im- Wong, for Shanghai. prove the appetite, almost from the first done, and they give strength to everyone.

Pitsanulok, German steamer, 1,267, 0. Fuchs, Bangkok Nov. 18, Rice-BUTTER- VIELD & SWIRE.

Kwongsang, British str., from Canton, Whampoa, British str., from Canton.

Mr Young's case is a good example. I used to suffer from disease of the kidneys,' he stated, and I was afraid I should never get well again. Cold shivering fire wore one of the symptoms. These used to come on so suddenly and unexpectedly that I was often attacked when out visiting or walking, when I would have to be taken. home in a cab, and put to bed in hot blankets to keep me warm. I suffered terribly at times in a way which all those who have offered from their kidneys will understand. I was nearly doubled up with the pain. I slept badly every night, and had to exercise the greatest care in my choice of food. My illness was not ag. gravated by bear or spirits, as you might think, for, although a publican, I am a strict teetotaller. I had been under the care of a doctor for a long time, when I happened to read in a newspaper of a cure by Dr Williams' Pink Pille for Tale People, and I immediately decided to try whether they would have any effect on me. They have undoubtedly cured me.

Before I had been taking them for month I felt a great deal better. My appetite had improved, the paine had dis sppeared, and in other respects I was quite a changed man, I persevered with the pills, and in a very short time I was quite well again. The effect the pille had on me was really marvellous, My friends were greatly astonished at my recovery. I am so strong now that I can walk twenty miles without feeling the least tired, Dr Wil- liams Pink Pills are really wonderful medicine, and I can honestly recommend them to all sufferers."
