SIB, The whole agricultural interest of the country is at the present time most anxious to know what will bo the effect of Fair Trade on the price of wheat, and it seems to be very generally assumed that upless it will substantially increase it the farmers will nus aupport the new policy.

MAIL STEAMER DEPARTURES.

The following table is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer Bailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australia. Coast ports, Manile, and All Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports. the American steamors call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to those vessels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & O. maile advance, loss the bounty plus or minus the JEWELLERY DEALER AND GOLD usually reach London in about 28 days, and the French and German in about

during the twelve months. (2) The farmer night sell the wheat himnolf, repaying the

difference in the market price of corn. In this case the nation would pay for any loes or receive any gain.

The bounty can actual experiment, and in the first place at any rate, and probably always, by tender. The whole cost of the transaction can be paid from a small part of the taxes now at last to be levied on America and foreign countries. It will at least be cheaper than having (1) bread riots and starvation at home; (2) the countr conquered, as I be- lieve that it will be if we persist in the policy of the empty cupboard; and (3) the country after conquest taxed as it has not been taxed for hundreds of years for the benefit of some foreign State.

only be ascertained by

In my next (and I hope last) letter I will venture to make some forecast of the aum which this scheme will cost the American and the foreigner,—Yours, &c.,

INTERPORT CRICKET.

The Final Matoh,

Sensational Bowling. The final cricket match between the In. terport Elevens commenced to-day, when the Hongkong team were pitted against the eleven from the south. The westhor was

delightfully clear and cool when the match started; the wicket was a new one, pitched slightly to the south of the one used by Shanghai and the Straits; and the general conditions were everywhere favourable to the game. The attendance, as usual, wan poor when the batsmen went out, but Hongkong residents are proverbially late risers and cannot be expected to put in an appearance much before tiffin. Later on, however, the stands and scata around the ground began to fill and a fairly numerous crowd was present. W. Daniel took T. S. Smith's place in the Hongkong team; but the Straits' Eleven was un- altered,

yelled the crowd. He was bowled first balf. Nine for 126.

Perkins then faced Dixon and saved the hat trick; a leg bys was scored. The tiffin adjournment than took place and the Hongkong team were loudly cheared as they came in, Dixon being singled out for *pecial applatise.

The Afternoon's Flay, The attendance after tifin was fairly good and increased as the afternoon wore on, until it fully equalled that of the fint match. All the pavilions were fairly well patronised, while round the ground there were few
