The nobility of the Field Artillery is seriously affected by the inferior quality of the draught horses. As we saw on July 31, one Division was able to bring into action only thirteen field un

guns, notwith.. standing the use of double teams. The horses are antall and badly trained, and the march of the Artillery in mountainous coun- try is slow. These defects in material re not altogether neutralized by

akill shd coolness of the gunners, who handle their guns with the utmost confidence, and are clever in selecting target as well as in alming and laying their guns. In the use of common shell, the Japanese havo depar- ted from the usual practice of European Artillery. There have, it is true, been Occasions when they were forced to employ common shell instead of shrapnel, because "of the limitations of the time fuse. coin- mon shell with shraphed proved irresistible against trenches, and troops satterred sa well as massed. In the opinion of men qualified to pass judgment, we ought to pay more attention to the use of common shell and to

the advisability of a proportion of such shells to our field battery equipment Surely the invention of a high explosive adaptable to fold guns ought not to be beyond the genius of some of our experts On the other hand, the Japanese might learn from us the advantage of indirect laying of telescopic sights, of avoiding sky- line positions, of not always waiting for the

enemy's fire, an

and of moving their guns in action so as to give the Infantry their full support critical moments of attack.

Many censures have been passed on the Japanese Cavalry. It is only fair to admit THE Underav od has roq, to that, these judgments are based on observa- tions from C. RooGE, Esq., to Sell by tion of a few isolated units, "No foreign Public Auction,

that the rifle, or even the carbine, is a more trustworthy weapon than the lance or the sabre. As to the Russian use of the lance, the circumstantial report of a French Oor- respondent, describing the annihilation of a.Japanese squadron by the lances of Cossacks, is a pure invention. No indid. ont of the kind has happened. Only two Russian European Regiments carry the lance, except on parade, and even they ap- pear to have left it carefully at home, for not a single lance has been seen save in a General officer's escort. As a matter of fact, the only regiment that ever carries the lance in Asia is the Cossack regiment in Turkestan. However deeply regretted by Lancor and Hosur, this picturesque weapon may be relegated to the museum of Military antiquities, and take its place

FISHERMAN ATTACKED BY A Contractors to the Military and

FURIOUS BIRD.

A Remarkable Incident. One is somehow reminded of the 'Arabian Nights' by the story told of an old fisher. man at Cruden Bay, which is near Aberdeen. He has just had a struggle with a roo-or, rather, with's huge bird belong. ing to the species which ornithologists have christened the great northern diver. Having profited by association with a genie some years ago, the old man became possessed of his own small boat, in which it in his

custom to make solitary fishing expeditions.

knocked overboard, and at first could do little more than defend himself. In one of the dashes the bird split the back of his hand open, and in another it struck him above the eye with its beak, infloting a wound two inches long and laying bare the bone. The furious bird made no attempt to escape, but whirled round, striking vi ciously at the man'a face and eyes. It con- tinued its attack till at last he managed to strike it a lucky blow with a boat stretcher, which broke a wing. He was then able to with comparatively little despatch it difficulty. The fisherman, who was bleed- ing profusely, had to have four stitches put into the wound on his forebead. The bird measured over three feet from tip to tip, and on being dissected was found to have swallowed a small whiting, along with the hook, the wriggling of the fish having pro. bably caught the keen eye of the diver, which must have gone twenty feet under water to seize its proy.

-But at this point it was seen that day was breaking, and Scheherazade reserved the conclusion of the story for another night.'-Home paper, October 7th.

In all the other stands there was a sprinkling of spectators, while a good number of the sesta around the ground were filled. ARRIVED.

Mr Sarney thought he would never be able Diomed, for Shanghai, to handle oar or scull again. For the hos pital authorities told him he was incurable, and sent for his friends to take him away.

"But,' said Mr Sarney (whose home is at Royal Oak Cottage, Gray's road, Henley), *I read in a newspaper of a man, afflicted like myself, who had been completely re- stored to health by Dr Williams' pink pills for pale people.

Why don't you try them? asked a triend.

Per Taming, from Manila, Mrs Jones, Mrs C. Hatfield, Mian Bishop, Mrs Schinst and child, Messrs Marshall, Daniels, Mildor, Peterson, Harper, Nolte, Sherman, Morse, Cunningham, and Corley.

Per Pentakota, from Singapore, 800 Chinese.

DEPARTED.

for

Mr Sarney did try them, and their effect was extraordinary. Before he had finished

Por Preussen, for Shanghai, Mrs Hayen one bottle he could actually walk round the and 2 children, Mr and Miss McIlroy, table with the aid of a stick. This was Mesars A. Wortmann, C. E. Ellis, Mair, after months and months in bed. After he W. S. King, F. M. Remedios," Jones, A had got partly through the second bottle he Razak, Power, and Capt. Freumann; went for a short walk His friends were Nagasaki, Mesars T. Tsukamoto, Onfuko, amazed to see him out, and asked him what S. Yogami, Jascio, Nagawa, Kawaguchi, he had taken to bring about such a mar-Nagano, Nishigori, Tarata, and Shinohara vellous recovery. He told them, apd and family; for Kobe, Mr and Mrs T. gladly, that it was owing to Dr Williams' Hodsumi, Mossra 0. G. Crane, Ohsuga, Y. pink pills that he was able to get out of Nakamura, and Matsumoto; for Yokohama, doors again. After the third bottle he was Mosers H. Jaedicke and 0. H. Thorn. able to throw away his stick. He per Per Yuensing, for Manila, Messrs W. severed with the pills, and when he had Burwell, Walker, Von Avend, Hewett, akon eight battles he was looking for Ryoso Marin, Kintaro Nalutome, and Miss work, after nineteen months without doing hige Nalu tome. a single stroke.

This is a remarkable cure, but there is no difficulty in expl-ining it. Paralysis is a disease of the nervous system. It is a sign that the nerves aro ill-nourished. The food of the nerves in blood. Dr Williama' pink pills for pale people make new blood. Ordi ary medicine could not cure Mr Sarney; Reading Hospital was perfectly right in sending him away as incurable by ordinary medicine. Dr Williams' pink pills have cured thousands of persons whom ordinary medicine could not benefit, be cause ordinary medicine does not make new blood. Any ailment that arises from Inck of blood, or from poisoned, impure blood, as anmmia, skin diseases, eczema, chronic erysipelas, rheumatian, gout, can be speedily cured by Dr Williams' pink pills; and disorders arising indirectly from lack of blood, as neuralgia, spinal disease, indigestion and bile (which are caused by the blood not being able to absorb food from the stomach) can be cured in the same way. But it must be the genuine Dr Wil. liams' pink pills for palo people that are taken-not a substitute. Genuine pills bear the full name. Dr Williams' medicine company, Holborn-viaduct, London, will send a bottle post free for two and nine- ponco (or six for thirteen and nine): but they can be had at all medicine shops if you insist on the genuine.
