'From Swanses,' said Sir Henry, we journey to Birmingham, and subsequently visit Leeds, Leicester, Derby, Middles- brough, Sunderland, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Liverpool, and Man- chester where my last performance will be given on December 10. After the Christmas

holidays, I shall pay farewell visits to my

friends in other provincial towns, and after Easter I commence a season at Drury Lane

Theatre.

'In the autumn of 1905 I start my last professional tour in America, opening in San Francisco under the management of Mr Charles Frohman, and I remain there until the end of March, 1906. On my return home I make my farewell appearances in

some more provincial cities, and afterwards in London, where my last performance will be given. So you can imagine I shall be pretty busy until then.

'My farewell visit to Sunderland will be of great interest to me, because it was in that town that I first appeared on the stage. This was in 1855. I went there on the ad- vice of a famous old actor, Mr Hoskins, who gave me a letter of introduction to Mr E D. Davis, the manager of the Theatre Royal at Newcastle-on-Tyne intimating to

me that I should obtain an engagement. whenever I presented his letter.

No actor can succeed without practice, without developing those varied accomplishments in the art which are distinct from any natural aptitude he may possess."

Subsequently the conversation drifted to Shakespeare, and to the recent success of some nove ist-dramatista.

dramatist, and shone in each capacity.; Shakespeare did not hesitate to draw many of his plays from novels and stories, with a result the worlā knowa: but in his dram. atisations there was everywhere the touchr of his master hand.

The dramatic art is allied to the narrative art, for though the novelist may invent the story, the practised dramatist must put it into dramatic form, and the.. actor then gives it Ulfe and individuality. Everything abtract that is shown in the work of story writing must be specific and concrète for both the dramatist and the player.

I am delighted to know that so many works of native novelists are finding their way to the stage, and they have my good wishes for success. During my managerial career I have been privileged to produce Taral plays dramatised from stories h British writers, and my regret is that have no opportunity of producing any more.

alterations may be contemplated, as Mr Brodrick's statements lead us to expect, in Lord Kitchener's 'scheme,' that in any plan

of redistribution it will not do to overlook the fact that we have inherited the legacy of proserving the peace of India as well as of defending her. The Times writer says:—

Lord Kitchener's schome, to which allusion was made in Mr Brodrick's annual statement, will be anxiously awaited in India by all classes. There is no need to jump to the conclusion that there is any idea of massing troops on the North-West Frontier, and in auy scheme of redistribu- tion due regard is sure to be paid to the lesson of the filtice. Loyal and quietas India is, the obligatory garrison will continue to bo obligatory, and Lord Kitchener knows well the ever latent elements of unrest in the vast continent which he polices, and he i has a thought for internal as well as for He understands external contingencies.

The tions, should and will be altered. health and energies of regiments are often impaired by their uncongenial environ ment, and every effort should be made to bring them into healthier and more in- spiriting surroundings. But the railways which have made the prosent distribution obsolete also tend to make mobilisation possiblo, and, happily for India, the great war which some experts contemplate will not come like a thief in the night, and there will be ample time in which to mo- biline. There are so many crying needs in the military administration of India for which money is urgently required that a very heavy expenditure on a general schume of redistribution is not advisible. There can be no finality in any such scheme, and when he has seen the old palatial barracks mpty and dilapidated, one must grudge, nxcept on the clearest grounds of health and efficiency, every rupee which is spent by the Department of Military Works. If Lord Kitchener had before him a tobda The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & 0. mails

His master mind is giving ooherence and symmetry to the seat- terud forces of India, and he is laying the foundations on which others will build when .founds are available. We may feel sure that Lord Kitchener's plans contemplate a house which will attract tenants. and that no military scheme will over bo devised by him which leaves out of consideration the sepoy and the soldier. The writer's con- clusions seem to be that there will be no massing of troops on the N. W. Frontier, that a very heavy expenditure on redistribu- tion is not advisable, and that Lord Kit- chener will avoid expenditure on bricks and present distribution is mortar. The

'imes, out of date, and according to tho 'should and will be altered while the somewhat cogent condition is added,'' sub- This financial consideration.' ject to phrase, so very proper and dear to the official mind, is sufficiently negative. No general redistribution can be accomplished without an immense expenditure of money, If it is the intention to accept a scheme of general redistribution, and to carry it out gradually when funds are available, 'it can hardly involve very serious and important changes at the present moment. For even supposing that half a million a year could be allotted for ten years so as to allow the expenditure of five millions, this long period will bring other men and other minds to bear on the question. The conditions may change and the ideas now propounded may get out of date.

Or perhaps we do not possess the secret of how redistribution of garrisons is to be effected without this usual accompaniment to the erection of new barracks The truth is that any real 'redistribution' will cost a great deal of money, and it would only be common prudence to see that our 'foundations' are solid and enduring, if others are to build when funds are available.'- on thesu Overland Mail.
