We have all heard a good deal about Japanese spies and their ways. Of their cleverness Mr Donath lisd something to say. It was very foolish on the part of the authorities, he observed, to have "obun. tenanced the presence in Port Arthur of so many Japanese photographers and barbers,

But what was worse, Japanese women, who pretended not to know a word of Russian, were admitted as servants inte Russian households. Even the wife of General Stossel possessed one of these no- complished lady-detectives, though no doubt Ahe was unaware of her true character, This, of course, was before the war, *1936 Äd in well-known, Port Arthur consists of two cities, the old and the new. Mr Donath thinks that if all the money which has been spent on Dalny had been devoted to the improvement of the old city of Port Arthur, the results would have been moro satisfactory. The situation
of the new city is unfavourable, because it is surrounded by shallow water. At present it does not neem that the naval investment of Port Arthur is very thorough, for, with
a little care, it is easy, thinks Mr Donath,
for blockade runners to get safely from 80421,000 Chefoo to Pigeon Bay-a night journey of about 13 hours whence supplies on be taken overland to the beleagured city.
In conclusion, it may added that our informant is
of the ultimate

AN ULTIMATUM.
•
Our special cablegram' to-day contains statements regarding Great Britain's action in connection with the outrage by the Baltic fleet upon the Hull traw- lers, which, if true, indicate that the nation is upon the very verge of war. But whether the understandings' of the Daily Mail can be accepted as ac- curate or even partially accurate in the circumstances--is questionable. What it has to say is practically that Great Britain has issued an ultimatum to Russia in which she insisted that Russia's acquiescence to her previous demands for the punishment of the cul- přits responsible for the firing upon the trawlers and a pledge that there would not be a repetition of the outrage, should be lodged in London yester- day afternoon." When one great nation speaks to another great nation in such measured terms there is no mistaking the sinister meaning. And lest there should be any possible doubt upon the point Great Britain, according to the Mail, has gone so far as to inform

It is in the year 1271 that we obtain the first genuine glimpse of true Artillery, and its origin is most unmistakably foreign, and almost certainly Arabic or Arabo- Persian. The story, as told in the Yuan Shi, or 'Mongol History,' is this. In 1271 Kublai sent an envoy to demand po artificers from his relative 'Prince Elebuke. This can only be Kublai' brother Arikhugs, who, after an unccessful rebellion, had made peace with Kublai in 1264, and had then gone west to attack Algu, then in possession of Jagatai's Western Asia Empire-some foreign writers give 1266 as the date of Arikbuga's death; if that is really correct, then Kublai may have been ignorant of the fact. It is stated that the French are attempting to secure coolies here for the building of a railway in Yunnan. There fore the French Consul (whether of Yun. nan or Canton is not clearly stated) has decided to send out appeals throughout the Two Kwangs, with a view to secure the needed labourers. Those who have been down there and returned affirm that the climate is quite suitable for the coolies of these provinces. Before effect can be given to this intention, the question must be referred to the foreign office at Peking, from which orders will be issued to all the high officials concerned to consult and decide what shall be done,

Dr Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People bured him of Rheumatic fever-the Worat form of Rhoum stism-is therefore worthy of special attention, especially as it bowa what Rheumatism is, and how it is
|
Mr Frederick Turner, of the Bridgtoum Cannock Bund, who was cured terrible Rheuma ism by Dr Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People. In 1887 Mr Turner, then in the Army. bad his first attack of Rheumatic Fever Five years ago he had a second and worse atta k. It pulled him down so much that his friends thought he was in a Consump. tion His clothes bung about him like a kelo'on. He was very ill and miserablo.
Of old, Mr Turner would have been treated with emb ocations and liniments rubbed into the skin. But Medical Science has advanced now, and we know that Rheumatism isn't an external complaint. Microscopical and chemical researches have shown that Rboumatism is caused by an acid in the blood. Many people have a little of this Lactic Acid in the blood, and known nothing of it until they are exposed to cold and damp. Then, for some reason the acid begins to affect the joints or mus cles, and what we know as an attack of Rheumation. takes place. The acid stiffens the joints and draw up the muscles. Mr Tu ner said that he felt this effect.

F. it was Dr Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People which cored Mr Turner's Rheumatism. These pills cure by making new Wood. New blood gives the sufferer strength to throw If the prison. This Band new blood which Dr Williams' Pink Pills make cures many other diseases besides Rheumatism. It cures aramia, for in- stance; it staves off the danger of threaten. ing Consumption; it cures Nervous dis eases, Fite, St Vitus' Dance, Paralysis, because blood is the food of the nerves, and Dr Williams' Pink Pills are the food of the blood. Mr Turner's account of his cure is insteresting in itself and important because it shows the way of cure to other sufferers. I ued to return home from work,' he aid, 'feeling very tired and weary. One night while I was playing in the Band I felt I had caught a bad chill. Doing some work in the garden afterwards id not improve matters. Next morning, when I altempted to get up to go to work, I simply A friend found it impossible to do so. came in and gave me a good rubbing, but all to no purpose, and the various romedies recommended to me I tried, but all with- out Avail. Terrible were the pains I suffered, and I can only liken them to a dog gnawing at me. People used to say I was going into a consumption. I looked almost like a skeleton; my clothes hung about me. I could not turn over in bed at timen, but as soon as I commenced to take Dr Williams' Pink Pille I began to get better. Now I feel in perfect health, and free from all pain.'
And how many bottles did you take altogether ?'
|
* Five; but I felt better after I had taken the first bottle ful. I then began to walk about and after the second bottle to go out. From the time when I took the last dose of the fih bole until now I have not felt the pain. I am stronger and better now than ever I have been in my life.'
