THE DIA TH OF THE BATTERY.
Russian Correspondent's Unnerving Experience.
The destruction of a Russian battery in one of the recent engagements is thus des- cribed by M. Namirovitch Danchenko, the well known novelist and special correspon dent of the Russki Slovo and Associated Proks.
'Can anything," he says, be more torrible than the death of a whole section of an

| process of destruction and are unable to do anything whatever to prevent it? It was impossible to leave the 4th Battery on its old position-s hill cutting through our centre, where only two insignificant battalions were stretched over a distanos of two and three-quarter versts. Two Japanese batteries looned in front of ours. They were perfectly covered, while our 4th Battery stood quita opan before them. The enemy turned two guns upon our loft flank, and began to thunder, unseen by us, from the remainder of his guns against our 4th-Battery, of which they had become tired. At half-past ten it was still working. The rattle of its quick-firing guns

Underneath them something black is scattered. It is the screen. Fire flashes and small white clouds appear now and then from the black lines either from each separately or in volleys. All at once the battery becomes silent. The enemy thunder at it from the other side. No. acawer.. We become strangely excited.

Chamberlain's Policy.
LONDON, October 7. Mr Chamberlain, speaking at Luton, said tlint Lord Rosebery had elicited from Mr
Balfour a statement of the utmost import ance, more momentous than any he had yet mado.
The Premier's speech marked a stage in the great controversy.
Said Mr Chamberlain: I have no more idea of going back to the protection of fifty years ago, than I have of going back to the free trade of fifty years ago."
Mr Balfour, he continued, seems to have considered that it might be necessary to take a second election on the question of preference.
He (Mr Chamberlain) was unable to understand the necessity for a second plebiscite, involving two general elections, This was the only blemish in Mr Balfour plan, which brings before us a vision of im- perial trade which neither our ancestors nor ourselves dared to anticipate.

After receiving this letter defendant did not pay the boys and they loft.
His Honour pointed out that the proper course for defendant to have taken was to have gone to the Police Court and taken out a summons against them both for leaving his employment without a month's notice. Defendant had no right to deduct anything from the boy's wages for absenting himself from work without leave.
Judgment was given for plaintiffs for $15.18 and $16, but no costs were given against defendant.
His Honour--I should advise you to take a summone out against both the men for leaving without due notice.

A DISCIPLE OF HORACE
OR
The Retired Grocer.
Contentment is my strongest feature-- I am a most contented creature. My friends do grub, and muil, and sweat And long for things they ne'or will get. While I sit in my garden plot Contented just with what I've got.
One needs so little. It is sad
To seb men after wealth rub mad.
A small house, decent-ordered, quiet,
A cook with some idea of diet.
I am content to dine, but these
(On soup, fish, entrée, joint, and cheese,
Such guests as enter my poor door).
Are scarce enough to lay before
The smallest garden will suffice
To give one pleasure, and entice "One from the little library
Of well selected books. I see
No pleasure in long miles of glass, Armies of gardeners, and the crass
Pride in self-grown peach or pine. (The fruit on this poor board of mine All comes from the greengrocer's stall.)
I have no patience-none at all-
With those who wander far and wide
In search of horn, and hoof, and hide ;
Enough for me is my grouse moor, Some salmon-fishing, and a tour
Now and again through France, or week
In town whence I return to seek
With joy the country's true delight,
WAN.
