The Jiji contains the following interes- ting communication, which was sent to that journal by, its war correspondent at Liao- yang on Sept. 5th, the day after the Japa- nese occupation of the town :—I am sending you an account of what I saw in the vicinity of Lianyang station, occupied by our troops on September 4th, at two o'clock in the morning, because it was in this place that the Russians built their barracks and store houses for provislone, and it was all- here that a-large force of the Russiaus com- menced their retreat. I followed the cen tral body of the Japanese left Army, and we quitted our bivouac at five o'clock this morning for Liaoyang, occupied yesterday by our troops, It was so foggy that it can almost be said that we were unable even | to see things just in front of us. No firing was to be heard, and the absolute stillness of the atmosphere was very impressive.
After a little while, the fog began to dis. porse, and men of the ambulance corps could be seen here and there, carrying the wounded out from among the millet. At about six o'clock we discerned on the left side of the road, where the millet had been partly cut, several heaps formed by the dead bodies of our comrades. At first, we could not understand why so many Jajan- ese had been killed in this particular spot. But, going on a few steps, we unexpectedly came across a great number of pit falls and barbed wire entanglements, which had evidently been prepared on avory large scale. The terrible carnage which had been caused among our men at this place was entirely beyond description. One comparatively old soldier, with mustaches, apparently a second reservist, who seemed to have been bravely attempting to climb over the wire entanglement, had been shot dead in the attempt, and was found hang- ing from the wire by one foot. But the most pitiful sight was still to come.

Beyond the wire entanglements, there were numberless pitfalls in which pikes lind been fixed, so that the bodies of the men who fell into them had been impaled. They might have been a lot of fishes which had been spearod. Some of the bodica had been run through from the hips to the abdomen and the intestines were protrud. ing. Even through my excitement, I could not repress a feeling of terror at this sight. The trenches were each about sixty ken long and one and a half kon wide, and at the first view there did not appear to be

facta I have mentioned, it can be known how obstinately the Russians defended their position. Although we are there one- my, we cannot help admiring the excellence for their defence works.
Proceeding furthur, we encountered a very large trench about ten ken wide. There was no water in it, but the fact that a bri'ge had been built over it showed that
the Russians had intended to inundate it with water from the Liaobo for the purpose of hindering the advance of the Japaneso troops, Geneval Kuropatkin's quarters were found at a place about one cho (sixty kon) south east of the railway station The building was, for the most part, of brick, but the portion in which staff con. sulations were held, and which contained the civilian officials' rooms, was of wood.. The inside was surprisingly beautiful, be- ing artistically decorated, while it contain- ed nice easy chairs, excellent tables, and telephones of the latest tpye. The garden was quite a botanical collection. Not a single document was found in the whole house, except a roll of Christian sermons,. intended for distribution among the troops.

In one of these reports General Stoessel assures the Czar that the garrison can hold out for months yet.
The assaults of the Japanese are reported to have perceptibly weakened and he in- timates that the heavy losses have told upon the besiegers.
Owing to these reports it has been decided to immediately dispatch the Baltic fleet to the Far East, its destination being Port Arthur. Yesterday the Czar inspected it
at Libau preparatory to its sailing,
It is believed that if the garrison can survive till the fleet arrives the stronghold may be able to hold out indefinitely as extra provisions and munitions are being carried by the fleet.

country.
When Sir John French's troops landed at Clacton on Wednesday, it was amusing to see that the inhabitants who should, to play the game, have been hostile or terror-struck, were so hospitably anxious to greet them that the services of the police had to be called in to keep a space clear for the enemy to advance. Clactonites are devoted to the Red forces and to be a Blue is to go thirsty. In England I believe there is always more public sympathy with those that attack than those that defend, because we are naturally pugnacious.
