| THE CRATER OF MONT PELEE.

Remarkable New Formation.

Observera are much interested in the present appearance of the crater of Mt. Polda in Martinique, which exploded with such diesstrous effect in 1902. A home journal says no such amazing phenomenon has ever been beheld by the eyes of science, and the geologiste of the gifted world are watching and studying this extraordinary: now activity of olcado. Somewhere down in the towels of the earth a pressure is being brought to hear on the molten interior of the mountain like the squeezing;/ of a giant nut-cracker. Up through thu“. volcario, filling completely the mouth of the crater, rises a mass of white-hot and soft rock, which is cooled by the air and rises suddenly upwards for me e than half-a-mile above the top of the mountain. English, French, German, and American scientist are now at Martinique 'taking measurements and studying this unique cruption.

It is stated that reputable observers agreo in the particulars given. Prior to the series of eruptions which practically wiped out the town of St. Pierro the top of Mt Pelco was like a great cup half-a-milo across and in places 2,000 feet-more than 1376 a third of a mile-deep. On the south-west

side, towards St. Pierre, there was a deep gash in the crater's rim, and through this the lava ran down the mountain le in a broad river after the eruption. The form of this crater was considerably changed by The rim had crumbled in several places, and within a month or two fafterwards it was observed that the usual cones of cindera were form-

1791 estimated to be not less than 3,000 feet high. During the last twelve days of August 1903 the stone pillar attained the remarkable growth of 462 feet. This was in connection with a marked increase in the. activity of the volcano. Daring September the forces below appeared to be exhausted by their great effort. immediately lost. But afterwards it was mado plain that the enormous weight of the obelisk was not yet beyond the resources of the machinery down below. The Ruinmit continued to rise higher-and it is still ri sing! All this, observers agree, makes it mathematically certain that the great monolith extends far down beneath the surface of the crater. Otherwise it would not be held so firmly erect. There must he a huge bore. with hundreds of feet of per- pendicular longth, with sides polished like the bore of a rifle, through which the ma- terisl of the obelisk is forced, cooling and hardening as it movos slowly upwards. To conceivo of this operation one must imagine the bore ending at the bottom in'p reservoir of white-hot lava, which is ever increasing in quantity, and of which this bore is the only outlet. There is nearly always pres- aure enough to support the weight already within the bore, and as yet the foroos back of the reservoir have never been long unequal to the task of compelling the whole column to rise to make room for additions to the bottom: This bore does not occupy the whole of the crater's area. The obelisk, which must have the same diameter as, the bore, is between the crater's centre and the north-east rim. While the new. cone, form ed about what appears to be the foundation of the obelisk, is composed of a variety of 1805 materiale and crumbles easily, the obelisk itself is homogeneous, being, solid rock moulded from hot and plastic material into its present shape. Great ribs or dikes of cooled lava extend outwards from the but. tom of the obelisk, and above those on one. side it is fissured in every direction where portions of the surface have been dislodged during the mountain's convulsion of labour in bringing it forth. But on the north-east side there is a plain imprint of the bore in which it was moulded as it passed upwards. Here the surface is polished by friction and contains many grooves, always per pendicular. From this side, in the sun. light, the great shaft has the appearance of a dazzling white marble monument rising out of the mountain's top. The aides, which are roughened by fissures, are à reddish grey in colour, and seem to have the the texture of pumice.

The Tibetan signatories were the To Ripoche or the Regent, four Shapes, as members of Council, the Abbots of the three great monasteries of Debung, Sera and Gaden, and a representative of the The Amban asked National Assembly. that the assembly should not be held in the hall which contains the sacred picture of the Chinese Emperor. It appears this THE ANGLO-AMERICAN STORE'S portrait, which was introduced into the Potala nearly a hundred years ago, regarded with extreme awe and reverence. On account of its presence the Dalsi Lama is supposed never to leave the the consent of the without Palace Amban, and his desertion of the picture at this crisis is regarded by the Amban and the Chinese as a flagrant breach of national obligations. The audience chamber selected was the Throno Room of the Dalai Lama, with brilliantly tapestried walls and pillars ornamented with richly coloured frescoes. Besides the signatories, there were prosent the Amban and his suite, the Tongs Penlop of Bhutan and the Nepalese Ro sident and their suites, and a large gathering of British officers. Behind the circle stood a group of Sikhs, Pathan and Gurkhas. The ceremony, began with the reading of the terms in Tibeton. Then the treaty was placed on a table in the centre of the hall, with the delegates sitting round. The lamas wore russet robes, and the Shapés

Tubus of yellow silk. The treaty was written on a voluminous scroll in Tibetan, English and Chinese in columns. The sig.

naturios sto; ped forward in turn and attached their seal to each column. There was no trace of sulleress displeasure Among the Tibetans as they signed, and the Regent, who is a benign looking scclesiastic f great dignity, smiled as he added his ame. The general attitude of the Thibe- ane was cheerful and good natured.

The following table is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer sailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australia. Coast ports, Manila, and Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports. the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to those vessels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P O mails usually reach London in about 28 days, and the French and German in about 28 or 30 days.

Some time ago the Japanese papers commenced discussing the question of peace, and coutinental papers have for several months been busy publishing statements that mediation would be sought by one power or the other, and then denying them. argument the further hearing was adjourn ed, and this morning Mr Grist announced that he found the Statute upon which he was arguing had no power in the Colony. The Act was passed in 1845, and although it was clearly understood that it applied here, it did not appear to have been extended to Hongkong. There was, howe er, another defence the question of jurisdiction. In Soction 12, sub-section 4, of Ordinanco 4 of 1873 (new series) (the Ordinance con- ferring Jurisdiction on the Summary Court), it was provided that the Court had power to exercise summary jurisdiction in all actions for specific performance of a lease, etc., where the value of the property did not exceed $1000. The value of the pro- perty referred to was worth more than $1000. He, therefore, submitted that the Court had no jurisdiction.

The first Napoleon used to say the Highlanders nover know when they were beaton.' Possibly it WAS because they nover were beaten. Anyhow this motto has enough that is sturdy and valorous in it to make it worth thinking about.

Proceeding, the lecturer pointed out that the young mon of Campbelltown began with GRACE. They dealt with the foundation first. Hugh Miller used to say, that a brass farthing cannot be converted into a golden guinea by a process of rubbing. The noblest and most boneficent characters have sought a foundation firmer than they could compact out of their own resources.
