some £2,600,000 was saved by English and

Dutch sailors. The rest of the treasure,

some £7,400,000, still lies at the bottom of the bay. All kinds of efforts have been made for 70 years to get at this rich booty,

but the most recent effort, some few weeks ago, when some £80,000 was recovered, marks the first successful attempt since the great disaster. Those in charge of the work feel confident that it is only a question of a little while now when they will have the whole £7,400,000 safely on board their wreckers. When all the conflicting stories of the battle of Vigo Bay, fought on October 23

and 24, 1702, are sifted, there seems to be a general agreement that out of the 23 trea- eure-laden galleons which were in the inner bay at the time of the combined English and Dutch attack, 14 went to the bottom, either burned by the Spanish themselves

or sunk in the process of getting them out to sea after their capture,

The submerged "treasure ships lay it a depth of from 33ft. to 60ft, and for years there was talk of getting at them, and the Spanish Government granted to foreigners a number of concessions for that purpose.

It was not until 1825, however, that the task was undertaken in anything like a business-like way. In that year, an En- glishman, named Dickson, got a conces sion, and mado persistent efforts to get at the ships with a diting ball. He spent a good deal of money and a good deal of

In 1859, an English engineer, by micans of soundings, attempted to locate the lost galleons. He established and "doubt the position of the wrecks, capital gave out, and he, too, had to gave up.

Ten years later, an experienced wreck- raiser, John E. Gowan, au American, at the instigation of some English capitalists, went to Vigo Bay, and examined the wrecks located by the English engineer. He reported that the task of raising them 1603 would be much easier than other similar work he had successfully accomplished. Money was raised, and Gowan requested to get to work with all possible speed. But a new competitor was in the field. But it was too soon after the panic of 1873 People who had money were dis- posed to put it into something more tangible than Spanish galleons that had been at the bottom of the sea for nearly two centuries. So once more the galleons were left to rest in peace in their watery graves. Then came the formation of the English company recently, and, after spasmodic efforts cover- ing a period of nearly 80 years, apparently some of the much-sought treasure has at Isat been brought to the surface.

The

story of the loss of these galleons is one of the most

and

the most exciting of that era of son adventures. For four years the Spanish Government had not ventured to trust its American treasures on the high seas, upon ite American

to them were England and Holland, French and Spanish war Rests went to escort the 23 treasure-laden galleons to Cadiz. The Anglo-Dutch fleet hovered about the Spanish coast to cut them off.
