A case is at least alleged wherein a great nobleman spent half his time in more or less adorning the House of Lords and the other half in keeping a shop, with the object, it is further alleged, of escaping for a time, at least, from the trammels and dignity of his rank. A certain baronet of 'fast' tendencies made a practice of steal- ing away from his ancestral home and remaining hidden, lost to county society, for weeks at a time. It was popularly assumed that he was at some Continenta gambling resort; but, in fact, he was driving a hansom cab about the streets of London. His wife had left him, after reproaching him for his idle and dissipated courses, and had refused to return unless he proved his repentance by earning his living by his own exertions for a full year. As handling the ribbons' was all that poor Bill would do,' said one of his friends, thero wasn't anything for it but for him to drive his way back to domestic felicity-

Some years ago there was employed in a London tobacco shop a quiet, gentlemanly looking, crect old man, who politely but firmly declined to associate with his fellow employes or to give details as to whore be lived. He stole away every night, and re- turnod punctually next morning, whence none knew. Now and then he asked for a 'day off,'and, although he did not my нo, it was to attend his Sorcroign's Levec. The tobacconist's assistant was a dis- tinguished soldier, who had won a title by his bravery: but unlucky speculations had 1621 involved him in debts, which he could only meet by sacrificing all he had, including his pension. Then he had taken the first employment he could get; but pride led him to concoal his new environment from his friends,, among whom he continued to appear, albeit at mare intervals, in his character-which be had done nothing to forfeit of an officer and a gentleman.

Another innocent man who led a double- life was one who carly in his career quitted a provincial town, whore he left behind him a swarm of needy brothers and sisters, uncies, aunts, and cousins. He got on and eventually made money but kept the fact a secret from his relatives, because he knew that if they once learnt it they would prey on him unmercifully, besides doing him no credit in his new life. Under one name, of which they know nothing, he lived in a fine house, with a lady for his wife and with servants, carriages, and all that money could buy while for the benefit of his kindred he kept up a miserable, poverty- stricken cstablishment in White-chapel, where, in the most down-at-heels and wretchedly poor aspect, he received any of them who came to pay him a visit. He had not to continue his dual role for a pro- tracted
space, inasmuch as first one visitor and then another, disgusted at being regaled with a shake-down on the floor and bread and cheese for supper, when they had expected unlimited gorgeousness, returned. home in
great wrath, with the report 'John Thomas hasn't got on, and isn't worth going to 500. Wherefore, in due tinio. John Thomas, was free from secution. Cassell's Saturday Magazine. ̧

All travelers who set foot for the first time on a modern Atlantic liner, are keenly interested in the scientific appliances for ISSUE OF 30,000 NEW SHARES OF navigating and determining the position of the vessel, and are surprised at the perfect appointments of the cabins and the public rooms for securing their comfort through out the voyage. But the average voyager gives scarcely a passing thought to another development of the up-to-date marine flyer that is as wonderful as any of these-the culinary department and the organization by which the liner's big family is provided 'daily with every variety of food served in every attractive form thousands of miles from the markets on which land establish 'ments depend for the daily renewal of their
Hupplies.
It is really
a remarkable feat to supply for 1,500 to 2,000 persons for a week or more. The big White Star liners running from Boston to the Mediterranean are a fortnight in making their long voyages.. and to servo it day after day in a manner to satisfy the verying tastes of passengers drawn from six or eight different countries. Such a
thing was not even attempted on the old fashioned steamships where wret- che coffee, bread and wall meats the staple features of the table after the first two or three days out, and it has boon made possible on the liners of to-day only by the great improvements in storage and preservation of perishable foods mada by modern inventions and through the keen computition for the trans Atlantic pas senger trade which has loft nothing untried to satisfy all the fastidine

One difference from the ordinary kitchen | of Trade Notices of leading Manufacturers, that will impress the observant housekeeper
at once is the exceptional orderliness. Even the best of private cooks, when she is monarch of all she surveys, and has no one to share her domain, will clutter about & good deal, and will leave the rolling pio sticky with dough till the cake has finished haking and in a big hotel there is plenty of how room and it does not matter if utensil not in use are lying about. Bot on the ocean steamship, even on such hig vessels us the 20,064-ton Celtic and Cedric, is valuable and the shipboard rule of space

The Askold.”
SHANGHAI, August 29. The work of disarming the Askold, which began yesterday afternoon, has not yet been completed. Inspector Mellows visited the Cosmopolitan Dock this morning to super. intend the work of disarmament. At pre- sent all the small arms and the breech- blocks of the guns have been packed in boxes, ready to be removed to the Kiang- nan Arsonal, where they will be stored till the termination of hostilities. It is under- stood that their transference from the Askold to the Arsenal will take place to-morrow morning. The heavier portion of the Askold armament cannot be removed till she comes out of dock. However, the repairs are being pushed forward rapidly and the outer cas- inga of the funnels have now been com pleted. LHABSA, August-14. The Amban has received the draft of a
reply to our demands drawn up by the National Assembly. The communication merely indicates the attitude of the Tibetan Government and can hardly be considered in an official light, Colonel Younghusband at present having received no answer from the Council. The Tibetans regard the negotiations in the light of a buckster's bargain and do not realise that we are in a position to enforce our terms, but con- sider our demands liable to reduction. They in turn by opening negotiations in an unconciliatory manner expect to effect a compromise and escape the full exaction of the penalty.

THE CANTON RIVER BAR-

Dificulties of, Removal. Some time ago we made the welcome an. nonncoment that the barriers in the Canton River were to be removed. Tenders have since been called for the removal of the iron and wooden piles and blocks of granito. A few tenders have been accepted, but as yet it is impossible to say when the work will actually commence.
It is not intended to remove the whole of each barrier right across the river, but to remove only enough to provide a sufficiently wide navigablo channel at each barrier.
The removal of the iron and wooden piles is only a small matter and one that will soon be overcome, once the opera. tions are commenced. The removal of the solid blooks of granite, however, is quite a different thing, which will take time and be fraught with difficulty. Each separate. block will have to be lifted out by a crane, and when it is remembered that some of the barriers are three hundred feet in breadth, it will be seen that the removal of the blocks

San Francisco, August 31.-The fighting at Liaogang has now become general, all the divisions of both armies participating. It is estimated that fully half a million men are engaged on both sides, the Japanese force being placed at about 300,000, The fighting at Anshanshan was of the most des- perste description, the Japanese availing themselves of the ravines which intersect the fields there. In the attack upon the Russian left wing, about eight miles north of Anshanshan, the Japanese suffered very heavy loss from repeated chargos of Cossacks, at one place a whole detachment being almost annihilated. Reports which have reached St. Petersburg credit the Japanese artillery fire with being deadly in its accuracy. The repulso at Anshanshan is Attributed to its agency.
