Why not draw down the front blinds in order to deceive the public, and take ̈s, quiet holiday in your back garden? I have heard of people who profess to have done this with admirable at results. They saved a great-deal of moncy, and got much nioro quiet than they would hayo got at the seaside. THE Attention of Advertisers is drawn to the Latest Hours for receiving
or Hampton Court for a trifle, and no seaside resort can shew' you anything half so beautiful. But the Londoner reject these suggestions with scorn. August is his Saturnalia. He must go soujewhere, he must get out of his groove. If he does not, he believes that he will die.
.A
Perhaps he is right. Tho instinct for Nature is hard to kill, and a fortnight's fresh air, under wide skies, dues more to keep us sane and human than we suppose. My chief complaint against the annual exodus is that we all have to go at the same time. For this school terms are responsible. In the days when I had no occasion to think of school terms I some. times made my exodus in June. That was something like an exodus. Porters saluted me with reverence, and hastened to meet my wishes. Een cabmen were respectful. In railway cartinges I could choose my scat, and a small ep to the guard was not ineffectual. It was the same at hotels-I had the pleasant senso of being teatod as a Royal personage. The mana- ger bowed low at my appearance, and was. perspiringly grateful. My bedroom wa upon the first floor as a matter of course-i
26 would have been an unheard of insult to suggest anything less palatial. And my bill was small. It was prosented with difidence, and the payment of it was mark- ed with the warmest demonstration of thankfulness. And all this happened be- 01088 I traveled in June, soberly and advisedly, in advance of the wanton crowd. It is a real misfortune that we should all take holidny in the game month. It means, of course, crowds, high prices, and goneral inconvenience. It is a very bad thing for watering.places. Everywhere one hears the complaint that the season, is 50 short that the lodging-house keeper, cannot Tivo except by charging high prices. But there is another feature of the case worth consideration. The most delight- ful poriod of an English summer is certainly not August. It probably lies between mid-June and the close of July. In these months the weather is usually at its best. The first delicato groenness of the pladed, the wild-flowers are in country is profusion, the days are long. This is pre- eininently the time to forsake the town, Instead of which the tyranny of custom shuts us up in cities when the country is freshest, and at last drives us all out to- gether, a weary crowd, when the summer is on the wabe. It is very absurd, and the worst of the matter is that no one can sag- gest a remedy,

THE 'SHAWMUT' IN THE TYPHOON.
Rides the Gale Smoothly. The American steamer Shawmut, 9,606 tons, from Tacome to Hongkong, arrived in the harbour to-day. Just after leaving Yokobama the Shatomut ran into dirty weather, but up till the time Shanghai was reached nothing particularly bad was met with. After leaving Shanghai, however, the Shawmut met a typhoon and for over twelve hours the rain and sen, aided by the violent wind, huli carnival over the ship. The Shawmut rode the waves well, and did not roll much, the average roll being about twelve degrees, although once she rolled twenty degrees. Naturally the passengers, after & trip across the Pacific in a ship that hardly rolled at all, felt the sudden change and many were forced to seek the seclusion of their cabins. From here, however, they were ruthloguly driven, for the top of the state cabins leaked and the water which was dashed over the side as spray, or which deluged the dook from above as rain, found

Mongkong Tides.
The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa tor Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9,
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.
