BIGNALLING BY SUBMARINE
SOUNDS.
Experiments in the conductivity of sound through liquide were begun many years ago by Prof. Elisha Gray, and in 1901 a ayetoms of signals hasod thereon, designed by A. J. Mundy, was succesfully tested in Boston harbor. Since then improvements have been made that are believed to render the system complete and practically perfect. Steamships plying between Boston and New York have been equipped with the apparatus, and are said to use it very fre quently in signalling. The principle on which the system works is thus described in Harper's Weekly :--
•Electrical transmitters peculiar to sounds which proceed through the water are placed in iron cases, one on the star- board and one on the port, inside the ship, below the waterline, and some distance back from the bow. They are wired to the wheel-house and connected there with a switchbox having two ordinary telephonic receivers. By a system of switches the ob server is en bled instantly to compare the sound received on the starboard with the same sound received on the port side. If a more exact direction is desirod, a slight swinging of the bow of the vessel will increase or diminish the sound-re ceived in either one of the transmitters to such an extent that the exact location of the submarine bell may be determined when the bow crosses the line.
“THERE'S NEW VIGOR AND STRENGTH IN EVERY DROP." The apparatus

'It is well known that a navigator in straining his eyes in the night for a light is tempted to believe that he sees a light at the point where ho expects to see it, and many wrecks have occurred for this resson. is designed to eliminate the personal factor entirely. The captain at his window need not know whether he is listening to the starboard or the port receiver until he has ascertained which is the louder. Having done so he pressos an electric button, which lights up a green or red light, according to whether the bell is on the starboard or port sido,'
The practical uso of the system in New

• It has been ascertained that tho receiver for collecting the sound vibrations need not be located on the putside of the vessel, bat operates as well when clamped on the inside against the inner surface of the outer hull, especially in iron ships. The sound vibra- tion from the bell passing through the wa- ter is communicated to the side of the ship's hull, and that in turn to the liquid or water iti the receiver.
·
•Inserted in the top of the receiver is an electric transmitter, something on the order of a telephone-transmitter, from, which wires are run to the pilot-house of the ship. The wires are connected to s battery and the primary coil of an induc- tion-coil in the usual way, and the telephone receivers to the secondary coil.
+
'It is obvious that when a sound impulse is given to the liquid in the receiver in the hold of the ship, it will be transmitted elec. trically to the telephone-receiver in the pilot- house. As the sound travels through the water in every direction from its source, ît is found that the impulse will be stron. ger and louder on the side of the ship nearest to the source. By this means the direction of the sounding-boll is ascer tained, for by listening to the telephone- receiver attached to the starboard side water-receiver, and then switching over to the port side and listening to that telephone- receiver, the ear detects at once which is the louder sound of the two. This was determined experimcotally by turning the ship around in a large circle, when the difference in the sound from one side to the other was very noticeable, according to which side was nearer or farther away from the sounding-bell.
*Our representative, while on' the Her- man Winter, observed the perfect operation of the apparatus when approaching, pass. ing, and leaving the Pollock Rip lightship.
It had been prearranged that the signal should be the number 73, the number of the lightabip. This locality was reached shortly before daylight, yet when the ship was soven miles from the lightship, tossed the signal, seven faintly but distinctly

THE DEFICIENCIES OF THE LATER BRITISH DESTROYERS.
Engineering produces a strong indictment against our new-254-knot destr yers, which are larger than the old ones, from 200 to 250 tons greater in displacement, being 540 to 550 tons. After the Cobra disaster, the Admiralty, yielding to popu'ar clamour --supported by the voice of certain admirals who were not exporte in naval »rchitecture -determined to increase the strength of torpedo craft to s very considerable extent. Since then, however, and subsequent to the ordering of the larger vesseln, a corn- mittee of experts have established that the carlier boats were quite satisfactory. The engine power of the new boats had to be higher to drive thom, at their lower con- tract speed. In the older 30-knot design

was generally about 6400 horse- power; in the newer vessels it is 7500, The armament in the larger and newer vesela is similar to that of the previous boats, so there is no increase in the offen- ive qualities. In regard to the important quation of cest, live of th
