One of the passengers, taking up the thread of the story, said that they had on the Petersburg a commission of three-ór four Intelligence officers sent from Russia. The Malace's papers were laid before them, and the manifests having been ox- amined they decided about 2 o'clock that the ship would have to be scized, .
'Did they give any reason l'
No, they were only dissatisfied with the information which the manifests con- tained. The Captain's assurance that the cargo consisted of Government stores for Hongkong was not accepted, and at about 6 o'clock att armed crew of about 20 mien came over and took possessİOD.
The Officers were very polite and explained to the Captain that they had no alteruntire than to do as they did.

The striking feature, as we have already indicated, is the removal of so many sailing ships from the register. The year 1902 showed the
of only 13,000
of sail. Last year the vessels and figure jumped to 118,000 tons, and now it bounds up to When, in 1,359 vessels of 300,000 tons. the period 1898-1941, the average annual decree in the world's sailing ships was 160,000 tons, the statistics were regarded Now the average of 4K revolutionary those years has been doubled by the re- moval of a great number of vessels of small tonnage. The circumstance can only be an indication that more than ever do the maritimo nations recognise that the future lies with steam. The real effect of these figures is, of course, obscured by a mero consideration of tonnage totals. If we take the 300, 0 tons of sailing vessela wiped off the register last year an equivalent to 100,000 tons of steam, we get an increase of steam tonnage for 1904 of not much under 1,350,000 tons.

SUPREME COURT.
IN CRIMINAL SESSIONS.
(Before His Lordship, Sir W. M. Goodman, Chief Justice.)
Thursday, August 18.
CHILD STEALING.
Chan Houg was indicted on a charge of feloniously and unlawfully enticing Li Mau Lam, a child of seven years, away with the intention of depriving Uhan Yau, the mo- ther, of the possession of the child.
The Attomey General, Sir H. S. Ber. keloy, appeared on behalf of the Crown,
while accused was unropresented.
Accused said that he was not in Hong- kong at the date the boy was stolen ; he was in Singapore.
The following jurors were sworn Messrs 8. A. Soth, T. Browne, A. B. Rouse, E, H. Ray, W. F. Gardner, G. W. Binder, and J. W. Crouch.
The Attorney General, in opening, said that on December 28 last the prisoner met a little boy playing in the streets and offered to take him to a theatre. He look the boy to Kowloon whore he lived in a matshed with the prisoner's father for five days or so. Later on the boy was taken to Samchun Prisoner and another man, who claimed to be the boy's father, sold him for 860. The mother of the boy reported his loss to the police, and the father of the prisonor was arrested and convicted. On July 20 accused was arrested at Shatin. His plea was mistaken identity: he was a
apore at the time. Evidonne was lod.
During the examination of the man who had acted as agent between the buying and selling partnera, at San- chun, in China, is Lordship said:- I should like the Chinese in this Colony to understand that such a thing us the buying and selling of children is quite unknown to the law here. The law does not allow any such proceedings in this Colony. A child is not a subject for purchase and sale like eat tic. You can buy a dog, but you cannot buy
a child.
The jury returned a verdict of guilty. Before sentencing accused it was decided to hear the second chargo against him. He was charged in company with Chan A Sam of stealing two children aged four and eight years of age respectively.
Chan A Sam pleaded not guilty. Tut Chan Hong admitted the charge.
In this instance the children were taken to Yaumati on the promise of buying them fruit, etc., and wore afterwards taken to the Now Territory.
A verdict of guilty was returned. In sentencing Chan Hong, His Lord ship said that accused bad already been convicted once-in May 1962-for being concerned in the kidnapping of a child. He evidently made a trade of child stealing, as he did no work whatever. He sentenced him on the first charge to two years' hard labour.
The second charge made the third con- Viction, and a sentence of three years hard labour was imposed.
His Lordship remarked that the two sentences would run consecutively, that was five years' imprisonment in all. He could have sentenced the prisoner to four- teen years' imprisonment, but he did not think that it would do the prisoner any At the end of good or the Colony either. his sentence he hoped that the Colony would be rid of him, and he gave it as his opinion that the Government should de

Dealing with Chan A Sam His Lordship said that as it was a first conviction he would sentence the prisoner to two years imprisonment with hard labour. Although the penalty was the same as that awarded to Chan Hong on the first charge to-day. His Lordship took into consideration the fact that he intended to give Chan Hong three years on the second charre, so that ho had dealt with Chan Hong somewhat lighter than he should have done

Entertainment at Mountain Lodge.
The juvenile members of the community were entertained yesterday afternoon by His Excellency, Sir Matthew Nathan, at Government House 'Mountain Viow.' The weather was all that could be desired and the party was a huge success, the little folk who attended enjoying themselves to the utmost. The children arrived between 4.30 and 5 o'clock, accompanied by their chape rons, and were at once put at their case by His Excellency, assisted by Captain Arbuthnot-Leslie, A.D.C., and Mr R A. B. Ponsonby, Private Secretary, who throughout the afternoon, were untiring in their efforts on the children's behalf. The lawn was prettily decorated, and the little quests were provided with all seasonable forms of amusement, such as tennis, aunt allies, races, croquet, and a toboggau slide, the latter being extremely popular and providing a great amount of anu ement. To the successful competitors in the races and other events prizos were distributed. Gmes having been indulged in vigorously the children were invited to an excellent spread laid out in marquees on the lawn, and in conclusion the little ones each receiv ed a notification advising them that a parcel wasted them at the Governor's Post Ollie
On applying they found His Excellency himself in attendance as General, and each child was sent away rejoicing in the possession of a present and a box of sweets. The Sherwood Forestor's band was stationed on the lawn and provid. music throughout the

Hongkong Tides. The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanso Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches boldw mean sea level.
