Means and Methods of a Cham- plon Interrupter.
Usually the best thing said at a public meeting is the anonymous ejaculation which the reporters describe as "(A. Volce).' Whoever else fails to make a hit, “A Voice" never is a failure. It was he who upset Mr Chamberlain's equilibrium at the Guild- hall meeting, just when the orator was asking for the reason why money was “BO- -doar in the City of London. That was one of Mr Voico's best achieve- ments, and it drow my attention to a very romarkable character who has hitherto“ escaped public notice, but deserves the laurel wreath we accord to a public bone-- factor. It was on Holborn Viaduct that I met Mr Voice. He got into conversation with me by alluding to a heated meeting which had taken place the previous day. 'I was speaking at that meeting,' he re marked. “Oh, indeed,' was my inadequato · 1483 reply. Yos,' ho continued, 'I made a speech which got into all the papers.' I was only able to say, 'Really; I'm glad to- hear it, for it seemed only polite to congratulate the little gentleman. 'I've SUITE of 2 ROOMS, on the Ground-got a paper here,' he went on. Ah, thoso wore the days! It was some- thing like a meeting when I could ask some awkward question of Lord Randolph or the Grand Old Mau. Nowadays the speakers only say that they will be ready to answer any questions at the close of the meat ing or elso the audience begins shouting Pat him out!" before I've really got into my stride, as you may say. But Mr Gladstone and the mon of his day seemed to thrive on
•
interruptions, and I liked helping them to a good retort-it usually brought down the houso. It was I who said to the Marquis of Carmarthen, when he was contesting his first seat, Does your mother know you're out? You recollect how he turned the tables on mo by knswering, My mother will know I'm in when the polling-day arrives 1' I often wonder if he ever thinks how much good that smart reply did him; and it was all due to me-and he's a duke."
This put Mr Voice into a reverie, from which I had to rousò him in the public interest. What are you in politics?' His reply startled me. I don't know. You see, I've been to so many political meetings 2030 that I am rather confused. There's a lot to be said on both sides, and I like saying it. I don't care what the meeting is about, so long as it is lively. Give me an Irish Member-Mr T. P. O'Connor, for choice- or a red-hot Socialist, or a stolid old Tory. It doesn't matter very much to me, so long as they give a chance of interrupting. Mr Healy likes it, I believe, and so do some of those young fellows, Mr Win- ston Churchill or Mr Lloyd George. believe I should like it, if I were on the platform instead of at the back of the hall. Of course, all men are not alike; I com- pletely upset an alderman once. He had got a neat little speech off by heart, and when I asked a question in the middle of it he forgot the rest of his speech, and had to sit down. No, they
didn't
put me out of the hall, that time. The fact is, I try to be polite; and I have seen
any a man meeting by mistake, while was listening quite quietly after sho ting

His Worship explained that in London an inquiry was always hold by a coroner as a matter of course but here the course was somewhat different. In this colony the office of Coroner had been abolished for some years and the inquiries were always held by a Magistrate-usually the senior Magistrate-when one necessary. If an inquiry was held into every case the whole of the Magistrate's time would be taken up; there would have to be a special officer to do nothing else. The usual custom was to let the police collect all the particulars concerning the death, taking statements from all available witnesses and then if there wore any points that required clearing up an inquiry would he ordered.

Fighting With Stones.
At the battle of Wafangkau a remarkable incident occurred. One Russian regiment, anys Reuter's St. Petersburg correspondent, gained the lower slope of the hill forming. the Japanese position, while the survivors of the 6th Company of the 3rd Regiment, about half the strength at which the compa- ny started, actually got within twenty paces of the Japanese entrenchments.
Angry at their inability to dislodge their assailants, the Japanese started throwing heavy stonde over the curve. Here and there assailants and defenders actually came hand to band, and at this point the
battle was carried on for some time with the
butt-end of rifles and stones. Thirteen of the Russian gone were amashed to atoms, the horses killed, and the gunners killed or wounded.
