I will praise it to others; not to you.'

This example answers those who affirm that the art of letter-writing is dead, but it is rather an exception to a rule of dull carelessness. It is thought out of date to thank a hostess at a party, and if a bed and board 'lotter is dispatched it is but a bald and ourt affair. The charming bow and emile with which French and Italian womeh of all ranks so prettily acknowledge the Icast service is all too seldom seen in Eng. land. A scoming lady recently dropped a gold purse-bag in a City street, and byatan- ders observed with a positive shock of sur prise that she took it in silence from a gentleman who restored it to her. A sort of heavy indifference of attitude seems to be regarded as eminently correct, but it is very chilling to the stranger within the gates.

The English complain with reason of the badness of German manners, but can they be much worse than those of the average British tourista, as we observe them clat- tering about Continental cathedrals? To note their dire eccentricities of costumò is

MAIL STEAMER DEPARTURES.

The following table is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer sailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australin. Coast ports, Manila, and Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports. All the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Munila, and, in addition to those vessels, special steamers ran there. The departure of evory steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & O. mails usually reach London in about 28 days, and the French, and German in about 28 or 30 days.

Dead so far from home, from mothers;

In Manchuria's soil reposing, Life's short chapter sadly closing. Courage! Heart! we are demanding, All these perils notwithstanding. Fear of death shall not alarm us; Trusting God, no power can harm us; Though the shells around aro bursting, For a better fight we're thirsting.

So, wo quickly closed in battlo; But, we could not stay this cattle; Crossing seemed to raise their ardor, And they rushed us all the harder. Stop then! Ah! we could not do it; And had bitter cause to rue it. Sharp Jap-rifles ever meeting, After that came the retreating, Back to Kulienchon's border,

When the fighting was severest, Our brave Chaplain,-man the dearest. Father Stephen, onwards leading. Cross held upwards, interceding, Downwards fell, two bullota scored him. Though our men almost adored him. Shrapnel splinters, wildly dying, Numbered him among the dying. Much more grimly, then, we fought then. Savagely, our weapons taught then, We could fight and do inuch killing. And for bloody tasks were willing, Yot, the foes, though we did wonders Overwhelming were in numbers; Cossack-seouts thus showing strongly Ignorance must count most wrongly.

Few and small, mere boyish ́haftler Was the story of our tattlers; But we found them ton to one, And the campaign just begun. But, Why mind it ?
