the methods adopted being cal troops, oulated to secure the thorough defeat of the enemy with a minimum of loss on our side. Thus in an attack upon one of the thick walled buildings, all the entrances of which were closed, there was an admirable example afforded how this kind of fighting should be done. A detachment of Sappers, with a few Infantry to keep down the fire of the defenders, made a rush to the wall, breached it, and then signalled back that an entrance had been made. Upon this ten- pounder mountain guns opened fire at the breach with common shell, enlarging the aperture and driving off such of the enemy ng were preparing to repel the assault. While the gun were thus bring at short range the Sappers stood calmly aside under the walls so as not to be in the line of When they saw the breach was big enough they signalled again, the gs fired a few final rounds, and than

Food will surely create Polson,

If Digestion is Faulty.

Well-digested food is the source of strength. Every act, every thought,, every movement of muscle or mind uses up some of the substance of our bodies. Food repairs this loss, but only when it is digested.

Undigested food ferments in the stomach, poisons the blood, starves the body and lowers vitality.

To be strong and healthy, assist your stomach, liver and kidneys to do their work perfectly by taking Mother Seigel's Syrup, which contains food- digesting ferments and gentle tonics for the stomach, and has cured more dyspeptics than any other medicine in the world.

MOTHER

SEIGEL'S SYRUP

"For nine years I suffered from severe pains in the vicinity of the kidneys, lost my appetite completely, and could only take milk and beef tea;: anything more substantial would not remain in the stomach. I became so ill that I was forced to take to my bed. A doctor treated me for almost two months, but without success. On arriving at Cape Town at the outbreak of hostilities, a Malay friend told me of the wonderful qualities of Mother Seigel's Syrup. One bottle relieved nie, and now I am never without a bottle in my house. X. Narodien, Malay Location, Johannesburg, March syth, 1904.

Thoro are very few cases of Bubonio plague reported in the district, but on the other hand there is a considerable increase in Typhoid cases.

THE RIBELLION.

A Case from Robinson Road., Particulars of a case which looks sus- piciously like murder came to hand to-day, the crime, if such it was, having taken place on Friday night last. It appeats that on Saturday morning, as one of the boya employed at No. 31 Robinson Road, Hongkong, was going to market for his

CORRESPONDENCE.

THE BAMBOO POLE CASE. To the Editor of the 'CHINA Man' The bamboo' case has aroused con- Bidorable public interest. One does not readily meline to criticise the lucubrations of our learned Judges, their decisions are like the minister's sermons on Sundays they must be borne patiently. But it is harily possible not to comment on the Contrust presented by the two speeches of our learned Judges-the one well thought out, full of common senso, well strung together, to the point and absolutely at variance with the other, which it is im possible to characterise.

Mr Smith states that the rifle is cal- culated to incommode; so are umbrellas, etc. This spurious assumption is the basis of Mr Smith's view, and he raises on it a huge superstructure which, even if well founded, might easily topple over out of sheer irrelevance. Mr Smith's argument is in the following terms. If the sub- section in question applies to all things calculated to incommode and rifles, &c., are included in that genus, then a very great hardehip will be entailed upon the inoffensive person who manages to carry an umbrella or rifle without incommoding.

WATER POLO SHIELD COMPETITION.

THE CHINA MAIL.

Arrangements for the Water Polo Shield Competition are now completed, and the draw for the first round has been publish ed. It is rather a pity that the Lusitano Club and the Y.M.C.A. could not see their way to place teams in the competition. As matters now stand five teams have entered, and, as the content is to be governed by 'Cup Tie' rules, four games only will be played, unless, of course, any game resulta in a draw and has to be replayed. At this stage the result of the competition is much in doubt, but it is confidently anticipated that A' team V.R.C., and 'C' team V.R.O. will meet in the final. It is stated that one of the members of 'A' team will be an absentee, which, if true, will weaken the team somewhat. The first round is to be played off before August 19.

This is grievance enough with a boat of ordinary beat, but when the taxgatherers come to a great heavy cargo boat of great carrying capacity they cogitato and come to the conclusion that this boat is the same length as the other, but the beam is considerably moro, so being experts in measurements they proved to measure the circumference of the boat. Strangely enough the boat people do not see the force of this new method. The rice shops, not being able

to procure rice, have threatened to lose to-thorow. There are rumours that the authoritīds are likely to give way.
