There are many different view about the authority of Sunday. The view of the English Church is that it is a spiritual out- come of the Fourth Commandment--a day fortunately set apart by Christendom as a day of rust and worship, of gradual growth, and without special enactmente as to what may or may not be done, oxcept as to trad- ing and money profits.

The Puritan view is much stricter, and regards the Fourth Commandment and all its accompanying rules as still literally binding.

On the other hand, Luthor and the Con- tinental Reformers made too little of it,. and introduced what is now known as the Continental Sunday. If any where,' said 1410 Luther, in his Table Talk, the day is holy for the mere day's sake-if any- one sets up ita observance on a Jewish foundation, then I order you to work on it, to ride on it, to dance on it, to feast on it, to do anything that shall shall remove this encroachment on Christian liberty.' Cal- vin, Beza, Melanothon, and most of the great Continental Reformers were of the same opinion.

What we have, as far as possible, to secure is that, no fatal encroachment should be made on the observance of Sunday as a day of reat. And unless all religious-minded persons preserve its character as a day of worship, I do not thing its sanctions as a day of reat would last very long. It is notorious that encroachments are, as a mattor of fact, being continually made upon it; and there is a very large number of persons who wish to see the Continental Sunday established amongst us. Now, to vast numbers of persons the Continental Sunday is not a day of rest at all.

I do not think, therefore, that religious- minded persons should exercise their liberty by playing golf on Sunday. Every addi tional encroachmgat adds to the general risk of losing the day of res The leisured

the week, those who are busy and can afford the game, can generally play on Saturday afternoon. There may seen to be very little difference between golfing and oycling; and I remember hearing the late Archbishop Thomson, of York, who was an Evangelical, in a sermon to young men, telling them that if they did not forsake public worship, nobody could blame them for taking a healthy run on their cycles on Sunday, But gólf does employ more 1898 labour than cycling. On the other side. there would seem little difference between golfing and cricket, or between golfing and football; whereas, matches at cricket and football would employ multitudes of caterers and drivers, and detach masses of people from any chance of public worship. If public amusements were encouraged, public work would fellow,

In urging the observance of Sunday, have always asked my readers and hearers to make rules for themselves if they plossed, and for those for whom they are respon- sible, but not to judge and ensure other people. It is impossible, then, to lay down any-definite rules for those who do not claim to be religious, or who are not in the habit, in any case, of attending placed of worship... But as most of them value. the national institution of the rest, how- ever it came about, and whatever may be its sanctions, it is not unreasonable to ask them to consider whether thepleasure that

BY HORACE HUTCHINSON,

"

To golf or not to golf on the Sabbath is a question that, obe would think, might be left to the personal conscience. That such, however, is not the general view is clear from recent discussions on the subject that have been not wholly free from acrimony. With those whose view it is that all re- creation on the Sabbath is an abomination, there is no argument. Scarcely is there argument with those who hold that the game would be harmless, that no fault could be ascribed to those who follow it on the Sabbath, if only it could be pursued in secret. These object to the evil example set to those whom they call the lower orders and the young. For the young, it is perhaps enough to say that there are many matters, bosidos Sunday golf, in which they have to submit to the ruling of parental authority rather than to follow their own swoot will in imitation of those who are of ago to judge for themselves. Their elders smoke tobacco and drink whisky before them and think no harm of the example they are setting, even while they give the young wise precept in quite a contrary sense,

With regard to the example for the lower orders, so-called, one is allowed, surely, to ask from what better courses, from what better inanner of keeping the Sabbath, are they likely to be led if they do follow the example of those whose social standing is higher, and pursue the golf ball under the fresh air of heaven Is the employment of their Sunday afternoons and evenings commonly so much better than this,

soul and body, that we should wish to keep them from the links? It is a question we are bound to put to ourselves if we are to regard the whole matter in a practical light, and the answer that unprejudiced observa- tion compels us to give must have the strongest bearing on the argument of the

example to the lower orders."

WHAT IS A BAMBOO POLE?

Judges Disagree.

Chief Justice and Puisne Judge's Opinions.

Chung e. Hong Hui, was delivered to-day in the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice (Sir William Goodman) and the Puisne Judge (Mr. T. Sercombe Smith) were on the bench, while the Attorney General appeared on bolmlf of the appellant,

In delivering judgment the Chief Justice said,~-~- In this case the Respondent was charged with carrying a bamboo pole on the public footpath, at P'raya East on the 17th May, 1901, such bamboo pole bring calculated to annoy and incommodo pussengera theroon. The charge was made under Sub-section eleven of Section 2 of Ordinance No. 14 of 1915, now (in the new edition

ду

Every person who shall roll or carry any cask, tub, Hoop, or wheel, or any lad der, plank, pole, abow-board, or placard, upon any footway, except for the purpose of loading or unloading any cart or carriage, or of crossing the footway,'

(A50s.

In the result, I hold that the bambon pole in this case, comes within the words of the subsection and that there should have been a conviction. I express my views with some diffidence as I understand Mr Justice Smith has come to a different con- clusion. However, by section 24 of Ordin auce No. 3 of 1873 (new edition) where, on an appeal, there is a difference of opinion between the two judges the Chief Justice las a double or casting vote.

The appeal will, therefore, be allowed, but in the circumstances there will be no order as to costs.

I desire to add, although of course, this is no part of my judgment, that I consider that the coolio in this case has had quite sufficient punishment owing to the loss of time he has incurred in attending this appeal and taking into account his enforced attendance at the Magistracy, especially as there appears, hitherto, to have been some doubt as to whether what he did was for bidden by law.

Bradshaw, of the inmortal railway guide, was a Quaker, and so was Edmundson, who invented railway tickets.
