*Smoky,' as Oqttonopolis is affectionately called by her denizens, has long held a warm place in Bir Henry Irving's affections; and speaking there the other day our greatest actor brought himself to contemplate his definite retirement from the stage in two years' time. Sir Henry is not the man to inaugurate a series of positively the last sppearance, as certain famous notorn of the paat have not scrupled to do. Perhaps his

speaking world will hail the news with delight.

Food will surely create Polson,

if Digestion is Faulty.

Well-digested food is the source of strength. Every act, every thought, every movement of muscle or mind uses up some of the substance of our bodies. Food repairs this loss, but only when it is digested.

Undigested food ferments in the stomach, poisons the blood, starves the body and lowers vitality.

To be strong and healthy, assist your stomach, liver and kidneys to do their work perfectly by taking Mother Seigel's Syrup, which contains food- digesting ferments and gentle tonics for the stomach, and-has-cured-more. dyspeptics than any other medicine in the world.

"For nine years I suffered from severe pains in the vicinity of the kidneys, lost my appetite completely, and could only take milk and beef tea anything more substantial would not remain in the stomach. I became so ill.. that I was forced to take to my bed. A doctor treated me for almost two months, but without success. On arriving at Cape Town at the outbreak of hostilities a Malay friend told me of the wonderful qualities of Mother Seigel's Syrup. One bottle relieved me, and now I am never without a bottle X. I will avoid giving you particulars bể the battles in the neighbourhood of Tellesu, as I believe by the time this letter arrives you ́ will have had full particulars of the action. I trust, however, it will not be superfluous in me to say a few words regarding the movements of the Hussian army. The fighting was ened, at 4 a.m, on the 14th, and the Russian treated us with a severe fire, our officers working with great valour and courage. By about 7 p.m., for reasons unexplained, the Russians began to retreat in an extremely irregular manner. about 5 o'clock on the following morning they took up their position at the same plsco as on the previous day, and chal. lenged us, taking the offensive. We re- sponded with a heavy fire, and they were thrown into great confusion, some retreat- ing and others advancing. Some who were retreating stopped abruptly and joined a line, which was still holding out, as they probably observed that 'most bullets were directed in the line of their retreat. Others who were advancing were seen to falter and retreat when the bullete fell front of them. Their boward- ly conduct was truly extraordinary, and I' cannot find words to describe their timidity. Poor Russians 1 They at last retreated in disorder at 3 p.m. During the fighting of those two days I have been able to fully rate the fighting capacity of the Russians, and observed (1) that they retreat or ad- vance at haphazard: (2) that they fire reck- lessly where firing is unnecessa.y and waste". their ammunition; and (3) that they are entirely lacking the qualities of courage and perseverance but display a cowardly and cruel spirit. From the first of these facts it will be seen that they have no personal judgment in individual action; from the second, that the instructions' of officers in regard to firing are incorrect; and from the third, that they are an enemy unworthy of lated Japanese the find. I observe one us, while cruelly putting to death any iso-

characteristic in the Russian soldier, how over, which deserves high praise this is that whenever a soldier is injured, his com- rade at once goes to his nasistados and gives him succour. They never fail to help the wounded, braving for this purpose a heavy rain of bullets. There must be reason for this, which we do not comprehend.

· His Excellency's Speech.

An Extremely Hopeful Address, The elements seemed to respond to the that His general unexpressed wish Excellency Major Sir Matthew Nathan, O.M.G., K.C.M.G., would arrive in Hongkong in fine weather, for this mor- ning dawned bright and c'ear. A cool breeze swept across the island bring- Ing with it a cooling influence and awaying the lines of streamers which flattered from mast to mast on many of the Merchants vessels, as well as men-of-war in the harbour. All around evidences of goodwill were to be seen and the animat- ed look on the faces of all congregated at Blake Pier and thereabouts told of the oxpectancy with which they impatiently waited the coming of Sir Matthew Nathan. For days past officials had been busy ar ranging for the reception and Blake Pier looked a veritable conservatory after the

with it. Along all sides were forms and pains, shrubbery and flowers. From pillar to post were strung garlands of green, pisked out here and there with coloured Howar. Under the mat roof of the shelter

the pier were hung intersected rows of greenery, which effectively livened up the wually dull appearance of the interior of the structure. A crimson carpet had been laid down on the pier, and on the steps, and twining round the lamp post and the iron poliars the same colour lent added effect to the scone. The ladies and gentlemen pro. sent, clad for the most part in light colours, although the sombre blue found favour with a portion of the male section, added their quota to the general scene, and in the pose of the ladies a very agreeable and re freshing quota it was.

MR. CHAMBERLAIN AGAIN. Glass (Trave and Dumping,

R. CHAMBERLAIN has drawn

Mattention to the decay of the glase- making industry. Investigation at Bun- derland shows that where the famous Hartley Glass Works used to stand, the ares is given over to streets of workmen's dwellings. The works have disappeared. But the Glass industry, in spite of "foreign. competition, is by no means extinct, There are other works which have success fully struggled against the foreigner. conversation with Mr Win. Johnston, a pressed-glass worker, living in the neigh- bourhood, at 18, Saint Mark-street, Sunderland, England, elicited that in spito of Mr Chamberlain figures the works where he is employed were working full time.

بھی

A

It almost seems,' he said, 'as if the attention drawn to the glass industry had brought about this revival.
