publisher; but there is plenty of it which 13376 might quite well have been left buried in the files of those newspapers for which it was originally written. It would hardly be fair to say that the book detracts from Mr Warner's reputation as a sportsman

the eleven which he captained, and the results of the tour, were such as might very well have stood alone on their merits, with- out the rather elaborate, and often un. necessary, explanation which Mr Warner bestows upoa them in detail.

'It was remarked more than once,' says Bishop Weldon, in an introductory passage (for which Mr Warner, it in to be feared, will scarcely thank him), that so polished a brain as Mr Warner's has seldom been seen beneath the Southern Cross!' The remark was apparently made when, at a farewell gathering at Tilbury, Mr Warner gave the first indication of the facile and graceful eloquence which has since charmed so many audiences in the Southern Hemis- phere. Mr Warner himself acknowledges that the difficulty of writing the account of a cricket tour in which one has had the privilege of acting as captain is that one is almost invariably obliged to adopt the personal note,' and, in the same prefactory remarks, expresses a hope that there is not too much of the Everlasting Ego' about this 'plain unliterary narrative." But it would seem that even the qualities of in- tellect mentioned by the Bishop us belong- ing so conspicuously to the author have not prevented the book from containing por- haps Just a little too much of the quality which he hopes it does not contain.

But there are many passages of great in- terst both as showing what may be con- sidered as the English view of certain incidents of the tour, and as evidencing the generally sound common-sense of the author. As to the latter, the following speaks for itself upon a subject in connec- tion with the conduct of visiting English teams, which has often been freely com- mented upon in Australia :-

Before proceeding to cricket, Imay per- haps be allowed to record that throughout the tour the amateurs and professionals stayed at the samne hotel. This was quite a departure from precedent, and I am glad to say that it was a tremendous success. It keeps the team much better together, and promotes a much keener mutual an derstanding, and a feeling that you are all one side, working together to a common end. Here is part of Mr Warner's account of the Australians' second innings in the First Test match, together with some of the spectators. It will be remembered how comment upon the manners of Sydney Hill was given out' by Crockett

was an insult to the game of cricket, and the wieest, course is to forget it as quickly as one may.

The reader will fail to understand why, if the last line quoted is Mr Warner's opinion, he has not followed out the wise course he mentions. But is it not all a little highly colored, and rather boyishly exaggerated : Of the match Mr. Warner's summing up is characteristic of the whole book-not unduly modest as regards his side, but still able to redit his opponents with good play.

We had to su rrender, but we marched out with all the honor of war, and there was nothing that savored of disgrace about our downfall. 1 slept, adds Mr Warner humorously, in room numbered thirteen! Perhaps this had something to do with the result!

And now we come to a passage which is really the gem of the whole book - Bir Warner's comment upon the Wet wicket'; incident of the fourth Test Match. One could laugh at the pasage if it were not possible to realise, here in London, that to a large extent, it will be accepted as 'goe. pel, and that it will be believed of our people in Sydney that they have not the slightest aportsmanlike quality as a crowd, No doubt at all that the demonstration was very regrettable-but was it really so This is, in bad na Mr Warner allegos?

I have described the cricket, for clear- ness sake, as though it had been running an uninterrupted course, but as a matter of fact there had been many interruptions. Rain-t one time heavy, at another a fine, misty drizzle, very wetting if not very violent-had caused several cessa tions, and with the score at 35 for one wicket, there was an interval of eighty ninutes, which, unfortunately, set the crowd off its balanco. Indeed, the con- sequences of that delay might woll lead one to believe that the big cricket of the This is world is becoming very serious. what might have happened that afternoon. Seriously, a portion of the cricket on the Saturday proceeded under polies protection, for it was thought necessary to station several constables inside the fence, because it was feared that a section of the Bottles crowd would rush the ground. were thrown on to the cycle track which runk round the ground, and soon the fringe of the playing-area was littered with broken glass. The ground staff ware want out with sacks to clear this up, and then there was more bottle throwing, yelling, and insulting romarks.

The trouble arose through the umpries thinking that the rain had not sufliciently stopped to allow of the game proceeding. Many quite unhin-sed persons thought tant they ought to have ordered the game to proceed at least twenty minutes before they did but my own opinion is that there was always a slight rain falling, and that Crockett and Argall were only acting in a scrupulously fair manner in the attitude they took up Mind you, that is rug own personal view; I do not say I am right, and it is no province of mine to defend the umpires They are the sole Judges of fair or unfair play, fitness of light, weather, etc. I never saw either Crockett or Argall during the wait, which lasted an hour and twenty minutes; yet many of the crowd thought that it was my fault that play was not in progress Coming after the umpire dispute, the ordinary 'larrikin' had it firmly screwed in the back of his ignorant skull that I had squared' the umpires! Indeed, I received two unnoymous letters to that effect next morning! Then when play did start they yelled and shouted at evory ball-and there were 35,000 people looking on. They chanted 'Crock, Crock, Crock,' advised the umpires to get ready their coffins, and inquired How much did you pay them, Warner? Then they tried to baulk Rhodes by shouting. 'Ore, two, three in time with the Yorkshireman's atride up to the wickets though this pro- bably di concerted the batsmen more than the howler. Yes; they are a lovely crowd at Sydney, and anyone who has taken part in a test match there may consider himself thoroughly salted and fit to play before an audience from the infernal regions. As Albert Knight saya: The howling of the crowd reminds me of the dog Cerberus But some barking at the gates of hell!' excuse may be found in that the delay must have been very exasperating to people to whom Saturday is their only chance of watching cricket.

1

That is Mr Warner's say,' and a very picturesque say it is. In Australian re- ard of his book it will be evident that he does not spoil the ship for a ha'porth of tar,' which, being paraphrased, is intended

to mean that his stories are not impaired for the sake of a little accuracy, and that he believes in his own surmise. Ope might quite indefinitely from the opinion which Mr Warner expresses apart from the actual (It is the opinions, chronicling of events. of course, which go to make the book in- The above passages are very ieres ing.) fair samples of the whole. In the conclud. ing four lines of the last chapter we read with interest :-'I havo led great men into battle, and we have come out of the fray And now Llay down the staff victorious.
