ON TO LEASSA,
The following teleprams give details of the progress of the Tibet mission to June
30.
· Kangħa, June 24.—Un the 2nd a re- connaissance in the direction of Nehru, twelve miles from Kangma, was made by the Mounted infantry, when 600 of the enemy were discovered in a well sangaroð · position. The onemy opened fire with jingalls at one and a half mile range. · Ony the 23rd a force' was sent out to dislodge them, consisting of two companion of Fusiliers, four Companies 23rd Ploneers, two "guns of Native Battery and forty Mounted Infantry.
News just been received that Nabru hne been evacuated and there are no signs of the enemy. It was reported two days ago that the enemy was advancing from the direction of Shigatai and contemplated an attack on this camp, but nothing has since- been heard of them,
Kangma, June 21.-Tain body of the reinforcements remained at Kangma to-day to await the return of the column sent out yesterday which returned shortly after two, reporting no signs of the enemy at Nehru beyond smouldering camp fires. The enemy's retirement was evidently hurried as a considerable quantity of breech- loading ammunition and other articles were abandoned.
On the return march five men were seized with poison symptoms from drinking at a pool and one case proved fatal. The enemy are suspected to have poisoned the water as they previously threatened. Aconite is very plentiful in the neighbourhood.
The Mounted Infantry and two Com- panies are established at the Red Gorge through which the route to Gyantee lies. It is a narrow dangerous defile.
The telegraph is extended to Changra. ⠀⠀ The convoy from Gyantse has just arrived. It was sniped at five miles out of Gyantse.
Saotang, June 25.-The British column has arrived at Saotang, fifteen miles from Kangma, passing through the Red 'Gorge without opposition. Captain Paterson's Mounted Infantry in the advance; came in contact with the enemy at Naini, six miles beyond this post, and found them entren- ched in a village and mud fort 400 feet above. There were two cannon, with a range of eleven hundred yards. The enemy opened at 300 yards, wounding one private severely. The enemy where thon driven out of the position, but on our force retiring they re-occupied and repened fire. Naik Band Shah, 55th Cooke's Rifles, gallantly brought in a wounded comrade under heavy firo,
The enemy attacked Palla village again last nicht, having the previous night attempted to blow up the post, but were driven off.
Naini Monastery is the place whichTM fired on our convoy yesterday Sepoy Mahmood, the wounded man referred to above, con- tinued firing after being severely hit. Naik Band Shab then came to his rescue, and after bringing Malimood in went back for -his rifle,
Allahabad, June 26.—A considerable quantity of explosives have been sent up to the force in Tibet as the experience of the past few weeks has proved that they are needed for breaching walls and demolishing buildings. It has been found no easy mat ter to destroy the solid masonry which is found in the forts and lamaseries.
Simla, June 27.-A telegraph wire has been carried right through to Grantse where an office was opened to-day. The headquarters of the Tibet Mission is now therefore in direct communication with India..
Allahabad, June 28.-News from Tibet which reached Sim'n on the 26th instant stated that three apparently responsible men from Lhassa had arrived at Gyantse. but their instructions as to the negotiationss -have-not-transpi-ed. The Dalai Lama has asked the Bhutan Government to interrede on behalf of Tibet with a view to some settlement. A present of rich aliks frour Lhassa has reached Colonel Younghusband. This particular form of gift represents the peaceful wishes of Tibet,
Sitnis, June 28.-General Maclonald arrived at Gyantse last Sunday with the whole of the reinforcing troops. Da his way up he was opposed at the village Níani which he took. The British lossen wore four killed and six wounded, including Major Lye, 23rd Fioneers, who was sovere→ ly wounded in the hand and also in the head, but is doing well. The enemy's losses were heavy. The Mission were found to be all well at Gyantse.
It appears that the Tibetan force which opposed General Macdonald at Niani was eight hundred strong.
The following news is issued officially General Macdonald arrived at Gyantes on the 26th instant. He
a small skirmish at Niani on the 25th (in
soldier, was killed), but met with consider able opposition at the same village on the
28th. The village was held by 8.0.Tibet-

heavily and fled to their homes. Several Lhasa-made rifles and arms were captured General Macdonald visited Gyantee 'Post- and found everything satisfac1ory.
The 19th Punjabis and ono section of No. 27 Mountain Battery have been order. ed to Siliguri.
The Government of India have sanction- ed the occupation, free of rent, of Govern inent quarters, when available, by families of all Warrant officers who may be absent on service with the Tibet Mission, on condition that the quarters thus occupied will be vacated whenever required for a public purpose. The concession will be llowed with effect from the dates of depar ture of the Warrant officore from their stations. +
Gyantee, June 28.-After Sunday's en- agement at Nangyi, the enemy_returned to the villages, and fired on the rearguard, who engaged and killed a number of then, To-day the Mounted Infantry were sent back to drive them out and found the placo deserted.
There were many incidents during yester day's fight. Lieutenant Turnbull, 23rd Pioneers, did a brave act rescuing wounded man under hot fire from the loopholed walls. Colonel Burn, of the Pathians, had a harrow escape. His men having just made a loophole in the wall one of the enemy inside pushed his rifle through and fired, the bullet passing between the Colonel and the men.
The fighting was from house to house and room to room, and the want of picks to break down the walls was felt. A num. bor of the enemy socrated themselves in the inner village, from which they could not be dislodgerl. The Artillery fire, though very destructive to the masonry, caused small Joss of life, the Intantry doing the bulk of the work. To-day the Fort has fired sever- ul rounds, and our Maxims from the Mis- sion camp sniped the my going for wator. It is said the enemy has three sources of water supply. The reinforce. ments camp is behind the Mission camp and out of range of Gyantse Fort.
Allahabad, June 29.-Cholera is said to have broken out on the road from Siliguri up the Teasta Valloy so the passage of troops along it may become difficult.
The 19th Panjab Infantry at Ferozeporo, and one section of the 20th Mountain Battery at Abbottabad, have been ordered to Siliguri in the case more troops are ro- quired for Tibet.
The latest news from Tibet is that General Macdonald was to resume military opera- tions on the 29th, which presumably means that he will clear the Tibetans from the Ayantse jong and town.
Gyantse, June 29.-To-day Gonora) was occupied in Macdonald's column clearing the village to the north-west of Gyanteo. All excepting Gompa were found unoccupied. The guns shelled the villages and also the big monastery of Tuchen, silencing the fire of two jingala.
a
The Mission force under Colonal Brander made counter-demonstration against Gyantsu Jong, occupying two villages. The enemy replied vigorously with jingale, but the fire was totally ineffectual. General Macdonald's comp moved across the river northwards nearer to the enemy's water supply. All the guns in the big monastery are now harmless owing to the excellent practico of our artillery.
Later on the Gurkhas were sent to crown the heights behind the position, the guns clearing with shrapnel several big sangars. The Infantry advance on the village and There was monastery developed at 5.15. heavy firing, the guns shelling the monas. Close on six tory with common shell. o'clock the 8th Gurkhas carried the big tower, and shortly after the 40th Pathana worked through the villages and gaiped the heights on the right, the Artillery meanwhile making excellent shooting against the masonry tower to the right of the monastery, and the Pathans following the enemy into the houses and accounting The Engineers then for large numbers. blew up a large portion of the main buil ding of the monastery with gun cotton. The Gurkhas and Pathans and also the Gunners did excollent work, the General causing his approval to be signalled.
When the Gurkhas stormed the big castle the left of the position, the enemy hurled atones, but were driven out, and rushed down the cliffis, hurling themselves in a panic over boulders to get to the The Gurkhas and Pa- houses for shelter.
thans destroyed the defences in the towers. and the position has been thoroughly clear- ed out. The work was doue excellently, as now the whole of the villages and the main position north and north-west of Gyantse are thoroughly cleared and the enemy have had a useful lesson. Many lamas were directing the enemy's.operations, one pro- minent figure treating our tiro with con- tempt but subsequently being wounded. The Artillery made splendid shooting with the new ten-pounder, using common shel's for the first time. The fire was most effec- tive against solid masonry.

It is stated in well-informed circles that the capture of Kaiping so essily was pro- bably due to the earlier retirement of the Russians in the direction of Tasbihiao, owing to the pressure of the Takushan landing force.
The Coming Operations. The evacuation of Kaiping the night be- fore the decisive battle, apparently implies that the Russians intend to make a stand at Tashihohiso, where they are hurriedly. strengthening their defences.
No battle is expected at Laloyang before. Tashihchiao and Haichung are taken, bat meanwhile General Kuroki is closely pressing Liaoyang.
The taking of Taahihchiao will make Yinkou (Newchwang) untenable, while the taking of Haichung will make the defence of Linoyaug more difficult.
