·MR SAVAGE 'LANDOR IN THE PHILIPPINES.

The Standard thus reviews Mr Savage Landor's book on the Philippines:-

Under the somewhat fantastic title of The Gems of the East Mr Savage Landor -has-give us an account of a long and in- terosting journey in the Philippine and Satu Archipelagoës, Credentials from Washington, which were cordially accepted ́by the local authorities, who placed at his disposal Coastguard cruisers, steam launch- es and other facilities, enabled him to gratify, as far as possible, his desire to go everywhere and see everything. The task was not a light one, for much ground had tq be covered, the Philippine Islands are Dumerous, and some of them large; he was absent from England exactly year, and spent 200 days of this in continuous travel among the islands, covering over 10,000 miles, which, as it gives an average of 64 miles a day, showe that he was much at sea, and on land did not let the grass grow under his feet. Thus his views must be to a certain extent 'im- pressionist; but he is an, experienced traveller, and accustomed to take in much at a glance, so that, apart from one or two rash assertions about medicine, geology, and Alpine climbing, he has written, a

Moyon, one of these, struck him as the most beautiful mountain he had ever seen, even surpassing, in the perfect symmetry of its outlines, Fujiyama, which, as his picture shows, it closely resembles, though the Japanese mountain is nearly half as high again. But Mayon, with its" sudden and violent eruptions, is the more formidable. One of these catastrophes, in June, 1897, devastated a largo area, the lava in some cases flowing for a distance of ovor two loaguos.. A ruined stoople, the sole rolic of a town which the author saw projecting among blocks of lava, was pro- bably a record of this outbreak.

Travelling in these islands, beautiful as they often are, is not without drawbacks. Some districts are very unhealthy— malarial fevers are common, as also are leprosy and many repulsive forms of skin disease; and during the author's journey cholera of a very bad type, sudden in attack and deadly result, was often provalent. It caused the death of native members of his party-in one case under very pathetic circumstances. Ignorance of all sanitary precautions, no doubt, does much to spread the disense, but the sick, at any rate, are not left to perish. One 1312 opisode, indeed, which occurred at a settle-

ment in the island of Damaran, shows that the white man might learn something from the 'grey barbarian ' :-

When I arrived the place was, for va- rious reasons, in a state of demoralisation. An American steamer called the Fanny had one day put in hero and left on the beach two, men infected with cholera. The na tives, with much good-nature, nursed these fellows, with the result that within the next few days 240 people died of cholera in the village. or nearly the entire population. Much ill-feeling and a deal of distrust was the outcome of this infamous deod, and the ignorant natives naturally accused the Am- ericans of maliciously intending to destroy the entire population, and brought the: usual accusations against officials of having poisoned wolls in return for the great friend- liness they had shown, towards the United States.'

This, however, it is only fair to say, is not a fair example of how the Americans treat the Philippinos. The former have n hard task before them; these islands, with their past history, made worso rather than better by the influence of European civilisa- tion, with their native inhabitants, of more

than

one race, and the innate faults of the savage, form, to use tho homely American phrase, a large chunk to chow. The new masters, as the author testifies, are doing

their best to cope with immenso difficulties, and this is especially frue' of the leading men. And he thinks that on the whole succoss, both educational and fiscal, though mistakes may be made, attends their efforts. In some islands treacherous and unscrapu- lous foes have made severity needful, of which he speaks in the following terms:-

J

One hears a lot against the Americans in the Philippines, and terrible accusations. are brought both against the Military and the Civil Government, but all this should be taken with a good deal of salt. Wa it must be remembered, are also terrible; and no one who has never been in one can ever conceive the horrors of them ; much as I sbhor unnecessary cruelty, I think that it is greatly to be regretted that the names of many brave American officers have been dragged wholesale in the mud by the usuar puerile, hysterical, self-advertising folke in the Statos--we have lots of them like that in England too-who are ever ready to pounce on any countryman who does any thing they themselves, have not the plück. to do."

It was the ivory white of Latin races, and not the pinky complexion of Anglo-Saxons, but that they were white there could be not the slightest doubt. This does not mean that they come from the same stock as we do, - nor is their colour derived from stray wrecked European crows which have dwindled in the interior and intermarried" For from it. It is mainly due to these people living in the dark forest, or in dark huts, and being seldom exposed to the light of the sup. Also to their vegetable diet. and to undue proportion of sweet food, which is bound to affect their blood, and eventually their complexion, and the con- stant immersion in water when moving about, the waterways being the only ones by which comparatively quick travelling can be effected in these regions.'

Travellers cannot always count friendly reception, though Mr Savage Landor did not find the nation so persis- tently inhospitable as the Tibetans of Lhasa. Cannibalism is not unknown, and pirates are sometimes formidable to small or ill-armed ves els, but the chief risk is in of the tribes are Luzon, where some enthusiastic collectors of human' heads- that of a white man being, no doubt, specially attractive as "a great rarity.' Altogether, Mr Savage Landor had an Interesting, if somewhat hazardous, jour- ney; be saw much beautiful scenery, and had experiences of humanity from men of the Stone-age period to the typical New Yorker, and came into contact, now with tribes whose religion is of the most elemen- tary type, chiefly a belief in fetish and magic Dow with Mohammedans, some. times intensely fanatical and inclined to run amuck'; and now with representa- tive of Christianity, not always in its best aspect. His Book, as might be expected, is rather a farrugo; but as a rule, it affords pleasant feeding, and is easy of mental di- zestion.

YHRONIC DIARRHOEA.--For several

years during the summer months I have been subject to looseness of the bowels, which quickly ran into a very bad diarrhoea and this trouble was frequently accompanied with severe pain and cramps. I used to call on doctors for my trouble but it became so egular a summer affliction that in my search for relief, I became Acquainted with Chamberlain's Colic, Cho- lera and Diurrhoea Remedy, which proved so effective and so prompt that I came to rely exclusively upon it, and what also happily surprised me was that while it almost instantly relieved the crampa and stopped the diarrhoea, it never caused con. stipation. On Saturday night the Orpheum Comedy Company again dolighted an on- thusiastic audience. The performance was uniformly good, and all players were recali- ed. The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanso Office in London from the result of the analysis. J of observations taken by means of an au- tomatio tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during tho

years 1887-8-9,

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.
