held on Tuesday, 7th Jane, at the Officer of the Company, 20, Cornhill, London, E.C., under the presidency of Mr William Keswick, M.P., Chairman of the Board of Directors.

The Chairman: Gentlemed, the Secretary will read the notice calling the Meeting and the Auditors' Report

The Secretary" (Mr ̊A. G. Wells)-read the same.

The Chairman Gentlemen, the Report that you have in your hands briefy, but I think clearly, staten the course of events during the past year, I have just refresh- ed my memory by looking at what was said last year when we met, and if I had to enlarge upon what the Report contains I could only repeat in a great measure what was then said. The year was one of de- pression throughout the world for ship- ping, and in China there was no exception to that condition. From almost the begin- ning, competition was extremely keon and the amount of freight less than: usual. Considerable financial pressure in China, limited the amount of business done by the natives, and for that limited business there was an excessive amount of tonnage available. The consequence has been that for last year we had very considerably re-. duced earnings. We were fortunate enough to escape any serious loss in the Under- writing Account, and that fact, combined with a reduction in the amount of risk covered, has enabled us to transfer a considerable sum from it to increase Revenue Account and provide sufficient to entirely meet what we have never neglected since the Company began-an ample amount for Depreciation of the Fleet; and touching upon that point, I will allúdo to the fact that from the very beginning of this Company's history, it has made full

keep of the steamers. The overhaul is of a very thorough character, and everything required to keep the Fleet in a first-class condition has been provided. (Applause.) Wo do so because we desire to avoid de terioration, and do want absoluto efficiency. This we have secuted. (Applause.) I think that is about all I need say with re- gard to last year. I am pleased to say that this year we have begun better-not in the first month, but in subsequent months of the year up to date, the earnings of the such a condition of things will last it is Fleet promise improvement. How long

impossible to forecast, but in China, when there bas been a period of depression, it is followed usually by a period of greater activity, and I hope that this season will prove no exception. We have sold out.of the Fleet two steamers which were getting rather out of date, and you will have observed in the Report that we have added five new steamers. It is our intention, as circumstances demand additional vessels, to reinforce our Fleet with the most modern steamers, to keep pace with the require-

time heavy seas were sweeping over the ship, and settling the Edenbridge more and more into the water,

night and day until the 22nd.

following day the sex fell slightly, abling the Captain to dispatch a boat to Mauritius for assistance. On the 24th the: vesxol was almost hull down in the water, and death seemed inevitable. Sharks were hovering around, and to save themselves from that possible fate the officers shot at them. At last it became impossible to remain any longer on the ship. Two boats containing the remainder of the passengers and crew were provisioned and launched. Early on the 26th the two boats were picked up by the Stanhope, and when Flat Island was reached the Captain of the Edenbridge found, to his great relief, that the boat he sent for help had already reached a haven of rofuge.

THE SLAVE'S REVENGE.

The stomach,' says Souvestre, is a slave which is obliged to accept everything imposed pon it; but finally avenges its wrongs with the lyness and cruelty of a slave

On the other

The eminent French author has happily ex- pressed an important physical faci. There is something unique and pitiable about the position of the atom cl in the hamun body. Upon no other orvan except the laugs can you impose anything from the outside world. The lungs Dead pare fresh sir only, and air in some forin ix the only thing they ever receive. hand, the stomach is a general receptacle, entirely at the mercy of its owner as to what shall be put into j1, when, where, and how much. A man can throw into it anything that can be wwallowed-overy variety of food, any sort of drink, any amount of both, up to the bag's elastic capacity; and, if he wants to, he can put a layer of pebbles on top, and finish off with prusato acid.

The point in, as M. Souvestre says, that this most important of all our organs is our slave. It cannot resist, it cannot call the police, it has no recourse to the law; it just takes what comes, and abides its time. But how to take care of the bealth, hog to prevent the outbreak of iments, is a problem much more complex than it seem to be. Nevertheless, when the enslaved and outraged stomach to ne against its owner, with the scourge called dyspepsia, it must not be assumed, offhand, that the owner really intended to drive his servant to desperation.

Mr H. Vortleda, of Dan Street, Burghersdorp, Transvaal, sent a letter on April 4th, 1904, this very year, remember, to the agents, at Port Elizabeth, for Mother Seigel's remedies, telling briefly the story of his sufferings of how be really expected death, of how his stomach had tyrannized over him, how it affected his kidneys and how he was finally cured. He says:- For eleven years I suffered from kidney trouble. which afterwards affected my liver, and I can safely say there was not a sound place in the

bolo of my system.

I always had a great deal of trouble in pass- ing anything from the stomach and also urinary trouble. I began to lose appetite. At nights I could only lay awake and wish for morning to arrive, and wen it did arrive there was no I became so weak that my legs could rellof not bear the weight of my body, and in fact my condition became very serious. Doctors were called in but I bo amo no better, so I prepared myself for the worst. Hearing of Mother Seigel's Syrup I made up my mind that it would be the 'ast remedy I would try, and after using dve bottles of the Syrup my condition began to improve wonderfully, and I do not believe there is any person quite as grateful as Yours faithfal- ly, A. Vortinda.'

That is the news from Burghersdorp, but now you shall hear from Johannesburg. On the 29th of March, 1904 (this very year, again, re- member), E. Peterson who lives at Lower End, Main Street, Johannesburg, wrote a letter to the agents for Mother Seigal' remedies describing his own case. He, too, was a slave to the out reged stomach He says For three years 1 affered greatly from bilionsness and in- digestion. When I sat down to table I could eat hardly any bing. Attacks of vomiting made me quite weak, and I was surprised at the change it effected in my condition. On rising in the morning I was seized with dizziness and hud on several occasions to go back to bed again. I tried variona remedies, but remained in quite tho- sama. conditin. While at Ospe Town, during the war, I heard of the wonderful qualities of Mother Belgel's Syrup, and I decided to give it a trial. After the first bottle the dizxiness and billous feeling left me, and I continned using the Syrup until I felt com #rtaly cured.”

It in better never to be sick, but when we do fall ill it in a gra d fact that a cure is at hand in the form of Mother Salgó's Byrup, which soothes

the stomach and transforms it once more into a

willing and a faithful servant--not a rebellious alavo.

It was three days after leaving Mauritius for Bombay that the Edenbridge || laden with molasses and sugar, first en- countered the cyclone on March 10th. Captain Evans gave orders for the engines to be kept at full spoed, with the view of gotting away from the storm centro. But much progress could not be made, and the barometer continued to fall. ATROCIOUS PIRATICAL RAID.

CHINESE GUARD-BOAT CREW MASSACRED.

Village Near Samshul Raided.

Piratical raids on Chinese Junks and small boats on the Canton river and its branches are fairly common, and the fact that the pirates usually escape compurative- ly uninjured has no doubt influenced them to make bolder attacks. On Friday and Saturday (July 8 and 9) in broad daylight two steam launches #ying the British flag wero attacked and stopped by piraces in the vicinity of Samshus on the West Rivor.

The band numbered at least twenty live, and, being armed, they had no difficulty in effecting their purpose. All the passengers were lined up and searchod, and all their personal property was stolen from them.

MARK

This successful and bigbly popular remedy, as employed in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rustan, Jobert, Velpeau, and others, combines all the desiderata to be sought in a medicine of the kind and surpasses everything hitherto employed.

This pre- paration purifies the whole system through the blood, and thoroughly eliminates every poisonous matter from the body.

THERAPION No. 3

THE SOLDIER'S SORROW.

A WAY THEY, HAVE IN THẸ AuMY,

It

is easy to enlist. The British Army good character: and it does not let them go for a trife. Before the Military Surgeons give a man up as hopelessly broken in health they go over him.pretty thoroughly, and it is quite certain that he will have everything done for him that the best medical skill that can be brought to hear is capable of, not only in fairness to himself, but also in duty to His Majesty the King, who must not be deprived of a good soldier without ample cause.

This fact gives importance to the case, remarkable in all respect, of Mr E. W. Hun, late of the Third Battalion, Re Brigade, as loyal and plucky a soldier as ever ate King Edward's Army Rations. To his groat Borrow, Private Hunt had to take his discharge as permanently broken down in health, which may be taken as sure proof that the best medical science the King's Surgeons could bring to bear on him offered no chance of his recovering health, Yet when the Army Medical Board had certified him Pe materly Unfit for Duty, Dr Williams' pink pills for the pale people not only cu od his disease, but made him a strong, activ man ng worthy of his clean military record. This fact proves the great curative value of the medicine, and Mr. Hunt's own description of his ill- ness is worth printing.

He served his country worthily and well for fourteen years in India, and the trying climate broke down his health. After suffering untold misery, and turning a gbastly adour a mixture of grean and yellow, he was valided home to

Hospital. He remained here three months, but not 10aining his stength, he was

man whose health has run down and whose blood has become poor and deficient in quantity, will suffer from the same palpitations of the heart, general weakness, host-ache, loss of appetite, and sickly, unhealthy pallor as an anemic women, and there are plenty of men who are boodless and anemic without knowing it. Dr Williams' pink pilla make new blood. It is thus that they have cured so many cases of anemia, bile, consumption, ocrema, fita, gout, heart disease, and paralysis. It is the genuine pills, not substitutes (hich some shopmen push) that cure. The full name on the pink is a guarantee of genuinoness. Refuse pink pills that don't bear Dr

You can send direct for

the pills to Dr Williams' Medicine Com pany, Holborn viaduct, London, enclosing the price, two shillings and ninepence (or for six bottles thirteen shillings and nine- ponce); but the best plan is to ask for them at a shop where they sell you what you ask for, and don't try to palm off
