She commenced to pay out op May 1 11th from a poluit off Fire Island. There are now two complete submarina cables between Germany and the United States. The cable just completed, was manufactured at Bremerhaven, and its total length is 4,200 nautical miles.

Captain Campbell, of the Hitachi Maru who want down with his ship, on being at- tacked by the Russians, was a well-known and popular sailor. The Times of Ceylon | pays the following tribute to his memory :

Captain Campbell was a fine 'old salt, a frank, genial sailor who carried his 57 ʊdd. years easily. In stature he was barely five feet six, but his upstanding carriage gave him a much taller appearance. Ho was woll knit and athletic in build, Small groy side looks and a white moustache gave a humorous look to his kindly face. When the great European liners of the N.Y.K. wore withdrawn from the passenger service to serve as transports, every one of the British captains volunteered to remain on their ships and continue in charge of the vessels while on transport duty. It was while serving in that capacity that Captain

Campbell met with his death, dying aboard his sinking ship as became a British sailor.

The USA. battleship Illinois had, rather unique experience recently. While manœuvring off the east coast of America the Missouri collided with the storn of the Illinois. The truss is part of the frame of the vessel and holds the propeller in place. The Missouri's bow jammed the truss into the hull, then wrenched it away completely, wrenching several plates and leaving two gaping holes in the frame, one approxi- mately one foot by nine inches and the other five inches by seven inches. The hugo propeller shaft was twisted and two of the three propeller blades were bent like papier machie. Divors placed mat- ting and planking over the holes. Then the tiller room, which was flooded, was pumped fairly dry and a solid wall of concrete and fire bricks built from the inside against the outer planking. More planks were then applied, and supports to the wall were stretched across the ship'' Thirteen hundred miles the big battle ship, under "command of Capt. R. B. Bradford, sailed-her pumpa going all the time-with one propeller and one engine out of business and with a solid coment and brick wall, built like the side of house, in her battered stern to keep out the sea.

Half houss and half ship in her storn quarters, the Illinois, thanks to the brick and concrete wall, was able to weather gallantly severe storms from Hat- teras to the Delaware and to end her singular journey in the New York navy yard in six days and seven hours' timo.

The French Navy has received a new and very important recruit in the first-class battleship Democratie, of 14,827 tons dis- placement. She represents the neweat type of French warship construction, and will form a very formidable unit in the fleet. Her cuirass consists of a waterline belt having a maximum thickness of 11 in. at the waterline, Above it is reduced to 10 in., and tapers off to 7.55 in. at the bow and stern. There are two protective decke, uno 2-4 inch thick on the top of the belt, and the other 2-8 in. in thickness, serves to reinforce the belt lower down. The two main turreta are covered with armour 11 in, to 12 in. in thickness, and the six smaller ones with plating just over 6 in. thick. Her armament consists of two 12 in. guns, ton 7.6 in. guns, twenty-six 3 pound- ers, and a couple of 1-pounders. She has five torpedo-tubes, three of which are pro- tected by the armoured sides of the ship. while the remaining pair are placed well down below the waterline. Like most of the lator-Fronch war vessels, tho Democratic will have triple screw propellers driven by ⠀⠀ three sets of triple-expansion engines, which are expected to give her a full speed of 18 knots. Her economical speed will probably average about 10 knots, and steaming at this rate, the 1,825 tons of coal sho carries when her hunkers are filled to their fullest extent, she will be able to make 8,300 knots without recoaling, so that” her radius of action will be a somewhat extensive one.

The Chief Justice said that he took the agreement to moan that, in the first place, if the tenant gave notice to quit he was to put the walls back; in the second place, if the landlord told the tenant to go he need not do the repairing; and in the third place, if the laws of the Government forbid the tenant to work there then the tenant must do certain things.

Mr Slade submitted that it was the intention of the parties that if by any means the Government took steps to stop the boiler-makers' trade on the premises, then the party who carried on the trade was to be responsible for the damage he had dono.
