A False Bosom Conceals Diamonds,

The New York Erening -World says: On the arrival of the Hamburg-American liner Pretoria at Hoboken recently a lady passenger, on being searched by a female inspector at the Customs House, was found to have concealed in a false bosom several handfuls of diamonds, valued at a very large sum of money. It is stated that the num- ber of diamonds constitutes a record for the New York Customs House. The name of the lady, who is described as being hand- somely dressed, is not divulged, and it is understood that no proceedings wore taken against her. There is much mystery about. the affair, and it is rumoured that the culprit is a prominent society leader. She spent money freely during the voyage, and the amount of her ggage exceeded that of any other passenger.

An Educator.

War is a great educator, and our geographical knowledge of the Far East has been immensely widened by recent qvents, though it would perhaps be a little more exact if any two authorities could agree upon the correct spelling of any one place. We are learning some Russian, too. A sotnis of Cossacks' has been frequently referred to by correspondents of lato; and everybody perhaps does not know what a sotnia is It is a term, which which has a social as well as a military application, and among the Cussacks means what hundred in local government used to stand for in England. For war purposes the mounted Cossacks are organised in polks or regiments of light cavalry about 900 strong, and formed usually of six

WHAT IS BRANDY ?

At last we know what brandy is. Mr Fordham at the North North London "Police Court has delivered his considered judg ment in the case of the Islington Borough Council v. Hillyer-a cano which it took two months to argue.

It was on March 1 that an inspector of nuisances bought from a wine and spirit merchant's sp. at 446, Hornsey-road what was sold to him as a bottle of bran dy.' It was labelled fine old pale brandy.' and cost 38. On analysis it was found to contain sixty per cent. of spirit, not deriv- ed from the grape. The question to be <lickled was whether the ordinary buyer of brandy expects it to be made from the grape, and Mr Fordhamn went into the in- tricacies of the subject yesterday with zost and thoroughness.

There is no standard for brandy (he said), and before I can decide the question of whether this was brandy I must make a Standard for myself, a standard which ro presonts what brandy in this country is in the popular sense; that is, I must find what the public what the ordinary pur
