The Tibet Mission. MONDAY, the 11th July, 1904, at 3 p.m., at the Offices of the Public Chumbi, June 16.-General Macdonald Works Department, by Order of His expects to arrive at Gyantse on the 24th. Excellency the Officer Administering The last reinforcements left this place on the Government, of One Lot of the 14th. The enemy's position at Gyantse CROWN LAND at Plantation Road, is supposed to be very strong, and very in the Colony of Hongkong, for a term heavy fighting is anticipated. The Tibetans' of 75 years, with the option of renewal entrenchmants have beon built most at a Crown Rent to be fixed by the scientifically and it is rumoured that a Rus- Surveyor of His Majesty the King, for sian Lama, with the enemy built the one further torm of 75 years.
sangars upon an excellent modern pattern. The transport difficulties are very great indeed, and despite excellent organisation supplies get to the front slowly. Ekka transport is working to Gunntok, after- which mules and coolies only are possible. Basc hospitals aro established at Gunatok and a new hospital is in course of construc. tion at Lebong with 750 beds. The difficulty of sending down the wounded will be great as the Nathula pass is very little better than the Jelapla route, which is now closed. Too much credit cannot be bestowed upon the officers upon the lines of communication who are working under well nigh insuperable difficulties.

Kangma, June 22.-The first column with the Headquarters Staff and Colonol Younghusband left here on the 21st, and arrived at Kangma on the 22nd, beyond which it is possible the enemy may offer opposition, as the route lies through the Red Gorge where the fight look place last April, and which is naturally a strong position. The delay in any case will be trifling, and the original date of, he arrival of the column at Gyantso will be observed. The second column under the command of Colonel Burn is one march behind the first column, and arrived at Kalatso on the 21st, and leaves for Mengs on the 22nd. It is said that a flying column for Lhassa has been detailed and that it will start im- mediately Gyantse Fort has been reduced. Disturbance in Assam. South Sylhet, June 20.Great excite ment has prevailed throughout the-district owing to the calling out of the Surma Valley Light Horse to disarm the Gurkha Military Police, the only defence now left on this frontier, with the exception of the Volun teers. All the officers are under arrest and an inquiry is going on. The Volunteers had to mount guard until the arrival of re- gular troops from Dibrugarh. It is reported that the Gurkhas have a number of grievances which will no doubt be brought to light by the court of enquiry.

the disarmament of the Military Police battalion in Silchar, there seems no cause for the alarm which was said to oxist in the Surma Valley. There were curtainly symptoms of discontent openly manifested in the battalion, but the Chief Commis- sioner has informed the Government of India that the matter has been settled, though full particulars have not yet other reached Simla. We learn from sources that the Surma Valley Light Horse took over the armoury of the Police, and did guard duties pending the arrival of a detachment of Military Police from Shil long.
The N. W. Frontier. Allahabad, June 21A further with- drawal of regular troops from the Samana and the Tochi Valley will probably be carried out next cold weather, unless some on the unexpected developments occur North-West frontier.

THE SLAVE'S REVENGE.
The stomach,' says Souvestro, is a slave which is obliged to accept everything imposed ap uit; bat Anally avenges its wrong's with the shyness and craolty of a slave '
The eminent Fuch anthor has happily ex- pressed an important physical fact. There is somethitig auique and pissable about the position of the stom cl in the human body. Upon no other or an except the langs enu you impo anything from the outside world.
The langs need pure fresh sir only, and air in some form 18 the only thing they ever receive. On the other haud, the stomach is a general receptacle, entirely at the mercy of its owner as to what shall be put into it, when, where, and how much, A man can throw into it anything that can bo swallowed--overy variety of food, any sort of drink, any amount of both, up to the bag's olastic capacity; and, if lie wants to, ho can put a layer of pebbles on top, and finish off with prosaic acid.
The point is, as M. Soavestre says, that this most important of all our organs is our slave. It cannot resist, it canubt call the police, it has no recourse to the law; it just takes what comes, and abides its time. Bat how to take care of the health how to prevent the outbreak of ailments, is a problem much more complex than
it seems to be. Nevertheless, when the enslaved
and outraged stomach turns against its owner, with the scourge called dyspepsia, it must not be assumed, effhand, that the owner really intended to drive his servant to desperation.
Mr H. Vertinda, of Dan Street. Barghersdorp, Transvaal, sent a letter on April 4th, 1904, this very year, remember, to the agents, at Port Elizabeth, for Mother Seigel's remedios, telling briefly the story of his sufferings; of how be really expected death, of how his stomach had tyrunized over him, how it affected his kidneys and how he was finally cured. He says:- For loven years 1 suffered from kidney trouble which afterwards affected my liver, ond I can safely say there was not a sound place in the whole of my syslom.
I always had a great deal of trouble in pass- ing anything from the stomach and also urinary trouble. I began to lose appetite: At nights I could only lay awake and wish for morning to arrive, and when it did arrive there was no relief. I became so weak that my legs could not hear the weight of my body, and in fact my condition became very serions. Doctors were called in but I bo ame to better, so I prepared myself for the worst. Hearing of Mother Seigel's Syrup I'made up my mind that it would be the last remedy I would try, and after using five bottles of the Syrup my condition began to improve wonderfully, and I 'o not believe there is any person quite as grateful as Yours faithful- ly, A. Vortluda.'

The frontier guards, who endeavoured to prevent their crossing, were fired on by the deserters and two mortally wounded. The reason is attributed to the cruelties practised in the Servian Army, not only by the sergeants and corporals, but by officers even. It is not long ago that a soldier who reported a sergeant in a cavalry regiment to Nish for cruelty was tortured to death by hot eggg being held in his armpits and other enor mities too horrible to mention. Recently a French theatrical lady recovered heavy damaged from an advertiser who had published a portrait of her without her teeth, showing what she might have looked like if she had not used his tooth wash. Some of the most painful accidents are those that go altogether uncompensated. Miss Hannah Rudd, a_woll-known lady artist of Leod, fell from a ladder white decorating a Christmas-tree. A medical specialist performed an operation upon her, bat she says that the effects of the accident continued for two years, and the only com Oanfa. British str., 5,676, T.
