WRECK OF THE HAESHIN.

Sunk in Forty Minutes. The Wenchow correspndent of the N.-C. Daily News gives the following particulars of the wreck the which was published in the China Mail some week

BRO:~

The Poocht on her arrival at the Lower Anchorage on June 20 was greeted with the startling news of the loss of the Haeshin, and the information that four foreigners, names unknown, were at Wen- chow awaiting her. The news soomed incredible, but when the city was reached, tho sad tidings were too unfortunately con- firmed by the presence on the pontoon of strange faces, and the information that four of her six-officers were in Wenchow, Capt. Lowe, the Chief Engineer, Mr Brown, and the second and third engineers Mr Miller and Mr Betta; but what had become of the chief officer, Mr Cross, and the second officer, Mr Wallace, nobody then knew. As ill-fuck would have it the telegraph was broken down, and it was impossible to communicate with Shanghai or Foochow Indeed it is only to-day (June 22), that' messages have been got through. The Haeshin left Shanghai bound for her usual destination Foochow. All went well for the first two days and on the next at 1.15 a.m. she struck something, what is not yet known, and in forty minutes wont to the bot tom in thirteen fathoms of water. The night was not unusually dark, the ordinary course was being followed, and nothing was seen either before or after the shock. The shock was a slight one, not enough to stop the ship, and yet within a few mi

tea the water was in the engine. room. When this was made" known the anchor was let down, the ship's boats were lowered as quickly as possible, and the passengers and prow soon filled them. Un- fortunately, it was found impossible to save the mails. The last man had scarcely left the ship when she settled quietly down, apparently on an even koel. In the dark. ness the boats got separated and when morning dawned the captain's party found themselves on one of the Tue islands, and the two other officers on another, neither knowing the whereabouts of the other. During the day they all reached the main-

and his party making for Wenchow in a land, but at different points, the captain Chinese junk, and the other two with their party making for Funing. The two latter officers ultimately returned to the coast, and were brought to Wenchow in a war junk, reaching here throw daye. and a half later than the Captain's party. While sympa thising sincerely with Captain Lowe and his brave and able staff, and commiserating them on their losses and sufferings, every ono will heartily congratulate them on their cscape from great peril, and especially on the success of their endeavours to save the lives of the Chinese passengers, There is. a rumour abroad that the Chineso crew. looked after its own safety, and that the salvation of the Chinese passengers is en- tirely due to the efforts of the European officers, efforts made at the risk of their lives. There were in all a hundred and thirty-seven people on board, and it is be- lieved that all have been safely landed. The Poochi takes the captain and officers away. We wish them Godspeed and better fortune, and hope and believe that when the Haeshin is located it will be discovered that no blame attaches to any of them.

THE CZAR'S ICE-BREAKERS,

What They will Do for Russia. At the present moment, as roadors of newspapers are aware, Lake Baikal, which lies directly across the route of the great Siberian railway, is frozen over to such a thickness that troop trains can pass, safely across it.

The ice is reported to be eight

or nine foot thick, the thermometer regis- tering some 36 degrees of frost. With the advent of spring, however, the line of rails will have to be taken up, and then ice- breakers will again be called into requisi- tion, to keep an open water-way for pur- poses of transport (Says Cassell's Saturday Journal).

On Lake Baikal the two ice-breaking vessole which will do this useful work are the Haikal and the Angara. The former, one of the most powerful boats of this kind. that Russia possesses, is nearly 300 feet long, and some idea of her size may be gathered from the fact that her lower deck is provided with three lines of rails, so that a complete train, in three sections, can bo ferried across,

Fitted with very powerful engines, the Baikal has been of incalculable. value in maintaining en open. uninterrupted railway servico throughout the faw winters she has been at work. Before her time travellers were conveyed over the lake by means of slodges, but this method of transit was not unattended by dangor, owing to the great cracks in the ice-veritablo death-trapa- often met with. The Angara, her sister ship, is a less powerful vessel, having only one screw, whereas tho' Baikal is a twin- scrow steamer fore and aft. She is well equipped for her work, however, and makes her passages with great regularity.

In the Baikal tho forward pair of screwn Berve to draw the water from underneath the ice, while the huge bows "of the ice breaker mount upon it and smash through: it by shoer weight. An ice-breaker, it may be noted, goes to work in two ways. She either mounts the ice, as just mention. ed, or demolishes it by repeated charges- ramming it, so to speak. The designer's care in building such a vessel, therefore, is to have the bow angles and lines so ar- ranged that the boat does not jam when drifting back preparatory to again mount- ing or charging the ice. To keep the ice- breaker clear of this the broken ice should' be forced to pass either beneath the vessel itself, or under the field ice that is ahead of her and on each side.

WAS

The Ermack, the most celebrated of Rus sian ice-breakers, is a giant among giant vessels. She is 335 feet long, and is fitted with engines of 10,000 horse-power. Hav. ing been originally designed for Polar work as well as ice-breaking in the Baltic, she

mado exceptionally strong. The Er mack is capable of steaming through ice two feet thick, and with from six to twelve inches of snow upon it at a rate of 9 knots an hour; and of charging through packs of ice of extraordinary thickness. She is quite able, therefore, to negotististe any ice in the Baltic Sea and, as her record shows, he has done wonderful service. In one season she rescued and assisted merchant shipping of more than two millions sterling in value, There is no danger of any Rus sian feet in the Baltio becoming ico-bound so long as the giant Ermack is at her station there.

Since the construction of the first of the 100-breaking ships, a vessel owned and om ployed by a Cronstadt merchant about the year 1869, the Czar's Government has been quick to recognise their utility in keeping the chief ports open. At Odessa, there are three larga bosta of this class, of which the biggest is the Ledokol III. This ice-breaker is 148 feet long, with over 2,000 horse- power. At Vladivostok, which is figuring so prominently in the present war, to the Nadeshny, a very fine vessel of Danish o truction. Both the Ledokol III. and the Baikal, it is interesting to obed English built.

CHINESE LEGENDARY LORE.

www.

The Mohkanshan correspondent of the' N.-O. Daily News writes the following legendary lore stories:→→→→

The advent of foreigners and their activity in building has caused much cou- ment among the local Chinese, Teashop talk has discovered reasons, latent and otherwise, which are supposed to explain the presence of so many outside people at this particular spot in China. Out of variant versions come the following:

it

THE GOLDEN BELL.-Many years ago, when priests were numerous on Möhkan- shan, a large amount of gold accumulated. It was announced that the tones from a bell made of this precious motal would Boothe many evil, and secure the favour of some good, spirits for those living near this costly talisman. Accordingly when the bell was finished priesteraft flourished until 360 establishments wore in evidence. However, it was impossible to keep the bell in any ono spot-irresistibly it scems, moved from place to place, presumably to At approach nearer some favourod one. Inst a head priest determined to bury it hard and fast to secure his own good for- tune. The workmen, of course, were blindfolded and led to a spot he had chosen. Eventually the bell was planted firm and deep. This displeased the genu so much that the priest died and the secret perished with him. The other priests disputed about the location of the bell and all tracen disappeared. Now the foreignera profess to dig foundations for bouses in order to build summer-houses, but it is perfectly evident that they are all searching for the precious talisman. The proof is plain from the fact they love the houses empty about nine months in the year and only come when they can stay and us their instro- ments (thermometers, etc.) in the warm weather. The wonderful beil is sure to bo near the man of the greatest ago, with the largest number of sons and the heaviest bank account. The legend goes that when 360 houses have been built the Golden Bell will automatically come to the surface and the first finder will be happy ever after.

THE SILVER BELL.-Some time af or the Golden Bell Hed disappeared enough silver was collected to cast another equal in value and immensely larger. But as one of the periodic revolutions swept over China, the metal was buried for saf keeping. A forest fire overran the mountain and no one has ever yet been able to find the hidden tren sure. Ostensibly, the Chinese labou ers accept wages when they dig foundations Epi houses at Mohkenshan, but any one who un derstands he matter knows that they are really seeking for lost silver; the money hey aco pt from foreigners merely suvos their face. The lucky gear wi hin the cycle of 260 is evidently now not far away.

THE IRON ALL-At a temple off to the south from Prospect Point there is an iron bell with an inscription. Rardless of what it says it must be read to mean, 'If ever this bell of its own negord should ring the magic number, the Golden Bell will come to the surface. The Silver Bell Treasure will be disclosed and a peaceful change in China will make everybody happy for 360 When that cycle closes all houses years.' at Mohanahan will disappear, and wilderness of bamboos will cover the place on'y to rovive again in cyclic periods.

PAGODA PEAK.-Centuries ago & Chinese Solon visited this apex of Mobkanshan. He noticed the wind blowing all around, but where he stond it was perfectly still. He inferred that he had discovered the point of equilibrium between wind and water (probably the vacuum vortex of a small eyelone, produced by opposite currents of air) At ny rato a pa oda was built there and both vege ation and population flour- ished. At last the pagoda fell into ruin, and the houses and people disappeared. So far no foreigner has been able to buy this open question place because it is an

whether there would f low an era of Great Pence or, Revolution. The Water Dragon is favourable, i e., allows the walls of houses to go up in moist clay, but th· Wind Dragon

is opprised becin-e the typhoons sometimes blow them down. No more than 360 houses must be built at Mohkanshan lest the Fire Drag n thould emerge in anger and then Tashan would become a volcano and destroy everything around it.

THUNDERBOLT RIDGE, Duringa rebellion in Uhina a traitor was crussing the ridge. that extends from Prospect Point to Tahsan. Lightning struck him and shattered an im- mense boulder into three great fragments. The central piece has been removed but the othor two rein in, one on each side of the road. Cleavage and scars are still present to convince visitors.

THE PEACEFUL PAIR. Years ago a Chinese muiden was betrothed to a 'monn- tain youth. The two candles lighted on their wedding day burned evonly. They lived quietly to a great ago and then died. Two pines planted at their grave still grow uvonly. It is confidently asserted that this old couple can never quarrel as long as the trees are not disturbed.
