The condition of the water of the Nethe, flow- ing as it does through several populous villages, rendored necessary the establish- ment of some system of purification in ad- dition to ordinary sand filtration; and after elaborate and costly experiments had been carried out by the promoters of the scheme, the Bischof system of filtration through spongy iron was adopted. After two- or three years working it was found that the spongy iron process of filtration, was cestly, as the filters became rapidly clog. ged with the impurities from the river, and frequent cleaning and breaking-up of the layers of iron bedenie necessary. passage through the cylinder. The water is afterwards aerated and filtered through sand in the ordinary way. Four of these revolving purifiers were erected, and their adoption set free the spongy iron filter beds which were turned into sand filters. Three large filters have since been added, with a third settling pond and an addi tional clean water reservoir, with a capacity of 3000 cubic metres. The Anderson purifiors are still used alternately, acdont- ing to the state of the water, with a new process of treating the water with ferric oxide. The apparatus consists of a large open tank, which is divided longitudinally into sections by three partitions. At the bottom of each there is the iron for the water purification. The water, after being raised from the settling ponds by the screw pumps, passes by in oper

FREIGHT CIRCULAR.
In their freight circular dated Saturday, 2nd July, Messrs Lamko and Rogge report: The past fortnight has been devoid of in- terest as far as freighting matters are con- cerned and the amount of chartering business transatted since issue of last re- port is insignificant, though it cannot be said that rates of freight are actually, ruling lower then when writing last, nor is the amount of available tonnage in any con. siderable excess to the present demand, limited as the latter undoubtedly is at the moment. As to future prospects, it is next to impossible to form any correct idea on account of the situation in the north; Judging from présent appearances, it is true that indications do not point to an early improvement, but there may be sud. den changes which cannot be forescen and which may give the market another aspect altogether.
With reference to Saigon business, wa hinted in last circular at the possibility of an advance in rates, owing to larger ar rivals of grain and this for a time has come to pass inasmuch as several stcamera found employment at the enhanced rate of 17 cents per picul, Saigon to this. Unfor- tunately, the local grain market lacka uta. bility and has caused the change for the better to be of but short duration, and closing quotation is once more nothing hatter than 15 cents per pical with little Or no demand for tonnage
Quarantine regulations at Saigon have
чіпсе
been modified, steamers having merely to undergo 48 hours hervation, but the landing of passengers or cargo re- mains prohibited as heretofore.
The demand, from Saigon to Philipps ports continues slack, only one fresh fixture being to orted at 30.cents per pieul and, at the moment, no further tonnage appoare to be wanted.
From Saigon to Batavia, a largo carrier has booked part capacity, viz. 60,000 picula at 30 cents per picul Gilling therewith s Government tender in competition with Rangoon.
Saigon to Japan, there have been occa sional enquiries on basis of about 30 cents per picul, but the rate has been found too low to ronder chartering practicable..
From Java to this, no fresh business hins transpired; present limited requirements go for small carriers only, at 30 cents per picul dry or wet sugar:
Recent Bangkok roports are anything but encouraging. Cargo would seem to have become very scatco for the time being and, some berth boats, it is said, have been unable to secure full cargoes. Latest tele- graphic quota ion is 24/30 cents per picul.
Newchwang business has been rather disappointing. A single charter is reported for Canton at the reduced rate of 27 cents per pical, but no farther settlements of outside boats are on record to either Amoy or Swatow, the former quoting 30 cents per picul for small quantities only and the last named port throwing out indications at business being practicable at as low as 20 cents per picul. The port of Newchwang, in the meantime, rousins open to shipping but produce does not seem to have arrived
in sufficiently large quantities to allow of
any material fall in prices.
The demand for Coal from Japan ports continues exceedingly dull. No freshi
fixtures are reported locally, but we hear of a small business having come to pass elsewhere at $1.30 por fon for this port and $1.50 per ton for Singapore.
From Mororan to Batavia, a Charter is
reported at as low as $2 per ton.

From Hongay to this port. two fixtures
ire on record at $1 50 pirston (briquettes)
und $1.25 per tòn Coal,

INDIGESTION AND SLEEPLESS- NESS CURED BY BILE BEANS.
THE
HE man who is a helpless invalid when he should be support and comfort to bis family is in a very sad plight. If you are constantly suffering from biliousness and indigestion you cannot help being a trouble to all your friends, for you cannot work properly and your biliousness mako you frotful, irritable, and suspicions. You can avoid all this misery by taking a course of Chis. Forde's Bile Beans whenever you bind the least sign of an attack of in- digestion, biliousness, constipation, or liver trouble; and even when you have been a victim to those disorders for years a thorough course of Bile Beans will com- pletely cure you by clearing the poison bat of the blood and putting the liver and digestive organs in a sound healthy condition. What Chas, Forde's Bile Beans are doing daily for hundreds of thousands of other sufferers they will surely do for you also if you give them a fair trial. Read this statement, recently ninde by Mrs Johnson of No. 46, Pittsburg Street, Belfast, Ireland, who says:----
About 8 months ago my digestion was very bad, and after overy meal an op- pressivo heaviness came over me, all my onergy seemed to disappear and to leave me dull and tired. Not only so, but from time to time I had acute pain accompanied by dizziness and headache. On some days, in addition to these symptoms, I had also frequent attacks of sickness and vomiting. While I felt heavy and drowsy during the day, at night I could not sleep. Instead of getting better in consequence of using various medicines I seemed to got worse. When I began to try Bile Beans, however, I found that this medicine was different from all the others I had tried. I soon began to improve and this gave me en- couragement to persevere with Bile Beans. The result of doing so has been that I am now cured completely. The dull heavy feelinge no longer trouble me, I have no pain after moals, and the dizziness and headache have both left me completely. I am now in better health than I over re- member to have been.'
Prevention is better than cure. If you have occasional attacks of indigestion you can clear them out of the system with Bile Beans, which will tone up the liver and digestivo organs and keep you in perfect bealth. Given when the digestive organs have become practically useless, owing to years of disease, Bile Beans have.complete- ly restored them and given back health and Joy to those who have been hopeless sufferers,

A Unique Typewriter.
A triple typewriter, manéfactured by an American firm, is principally for use in large shoe-manufacturing concerns in mak ing out order tickets for the factory. Nearly all such factories are divkled into three departments, each of which requires separ ate tickets, and as these tickets are made of heavy cardboard, carbon paqor cannot ba used in the typewriter to make duplicates. The triple typewriters are made from three single typewriters, ao joined &gether that they operate with one key-board. It is not more difficult to operate the triple than the singlo machine.
