A NIGHT OF DOOM.

Avalanche Overwhelms a Swiss Village.

Soon after midnight on April 19, with a noise as of thunder, a hugo avalanche of snow rushed down upon, the little village of Grengiols, in the Canton Valais, at the head of the Rhone Valley, Switzerland.

There was much snow on the mountains which hang over Grongiols, and a thow, with rain, loosening the great sheets of snow on the huge slopes, menaced all living things below with an abrupt and awful, death.

In the case of Grongiols it happened when everyone had gone to bed.. They had for. gotten the peril that thrust itself upon their notice during the day, but the vast fields of anow were losing thóir grip on fuck and earth, and soon after the midnight hour had sounded dooin descended.

It was 7000ft. long and 300ft. bread, this avalanche. Roaring and rushing, it pounced from the heights upon the villago, and a corner of it caught and swept away five houses a mill, and a bakehouse, and with them 20 living people-men, women, and children.

All the following day men were at work, digging atrenuously for what the snow held, and corpse after corpse came to light-and seven living souls. Seven of the dead were children, three were women, and two were

inen.

All of them-living and "dead—were clad only in the garments in which they had lain down to sleep.

Of the seven recorored alivey wore injured. and some seriously. More than one had been for 12 hours in a tomb of snow are the spades broke through from the daylight. Every element of horror is added to the story of the avalanche by the further details which subsequently came to hand.

Among the houses upon which the vast moving flood swept down was that of a joiner named Biederback, who was working away from home at the time. The cottage itself was torn from its foundations and dragged 300ft. further down the slope.

The rescue party came upon traces of the house, and dug deep down in the snow. Finally the debris of the shattered dwelling

was uncovered.

It was known that the man's wife and six children were in the house. Five of the little ones were found, still in their beds, but all dead,

A child voice was faintly heard and the rescuers again went vigorously to work. Deeper in the snow they found the mother, with the remaining little girl clasped clone in her arms. After being buried for ten hours in the snow the mother was quite dead, but the little girl still lived.

Unhappily, when the father, hurrying across the mountains to his home arrived there, he found the little one, had nisʊ succumbed.

In another family that of a man named Ambost, there were five deaths, the mo- ther, two daughters, a son of 22, and an old undle.

The rescuers wero told of a spot at which there seemed to be cries for help heard, and they lost no time in cleating away the snow. They had to labor to an almost incrediblo depth, but they were re- warded by saving the family, a father, mother, and three children, all alive. though more or less injured. The total death toll was 14, most of the cases being duo other to suffocation or to fracture of the skull.

One girl who was saved was found badly burned all over hur body. She was waken ed from sleep by the thunderous roar of the avalanche, and without getting up she lit a candle. It was then that the house was struck. The candle set fire to the bed, and, seeing that she was in danger of being burned to death, the girl had sufficient pre- sence of mind to make a snow barrier round herself.

A Canine Caddie.

The latest use for intelligent membera of the canine world is that of golf caddie, an occupation which Ben, the first dog to attain this honor, has held with cornmend- able trustworthiness up to the present time. The originator of this novel idea is lady member of the Bala Golf Club of Philadelphia, and Ben, the dog, is a clever Russian deerhound. This young lady has trained her pet so that with unerring cor- tainty he will fetch the golf balls that have gono astray. In an interview, the dog's mistress said that she first got the idea by Ben's own love for the game. Even when Dot required, he would follow the balls and, mark them until the caddio came up, and so one day, being left without a caddie,' sho was struck with the scheme of a canine substitute, Procuring a ball of twine, Bon's mistress fastened the bag of clubs to the dog's back, the mouth of it being at the back of the head, an:1 thus preventing the clubs from falling out, At first Ben did not take at all kind- ly to this strange but useful occupation, and resented the treatment in energetic manner. by rolling on the turf on his back and endeavoring to shake the burden off; but in the spaco of a week, through con- tinued efforts and coaxing on the part of his owner, Ben. became a full-fledged cad When this favorable result had been achieved, the dog was furnished with suitable harness of leather, a strap lyin Hat along the dog'a back, to which are at tached two pieces of leather to hang down on either side of the animal, with loops at tached. Through these loops the clubs are inserted, three being placed on either side of the animal. But this is only part of Ben's work, for as a fielder of the balle. the dog is invaluable. His keenness is remarkable, and ho can follow the flight of the most rapid ball, and then, quickly overing the intervening ground, bring it back to his owner.-Illustrated Mail.

THE WARSHIP OF THE“

FUTURE.

What Will it be?

The Russo-Japanese War has caused a revolution in the ideas of men who have had the responsibility of designing and constructing battleships.

What is to be the warship of the future? The big bulky battleship, or the smart rakish-looking cruiser, with a pair of heels, and an arma- ment that will make her at once the pride of her men and the torror of the enemy? No less an authority than Mr Alfred M. Falmer, of the woll known British ship- building firm which bears his name, has xpressed the opinion that the future will see a great diminution in the size of war- alipe. He inclines to the view that the war vessal of the future will be of the small cruiser type, as costing less money and being more dangerous to the enemy.

This view is based upon the successes of the Japanese torped boats and the tor- pedo-boat destroyers. At the same time other equally reliable authorities point out that it is unwise to take too hasry a viów of the succe or what appears to be the almost unparalleled success — of the smaller type of boats. It may be added, however, that in the opinion of all, or nearly all, naval officers the essential dominance of The armored ship remains unshaken. The

Walking Through Europe..

From Gibaltar comes the news that Herr Paul Deutsch, a Hungarian journa- list, has reached there on a pedestrian tour throughout Europe. He started on Sept. 1, 19 4, and has to complete the journey

by May 25 1905. Up to date he has cover-

ed a distance of 19,000 miles. He says he

has stepped 195,000,000 million paces and has worn out 364-boot soles. He has visit- ed the Kings of Belgium and Roumania, M. Loubet and the Emperor Fraucis Joseph. During his walk he has lost over half an inch in height, 14lbs. in weight, and seven teeth. The teeth came out through drinking polluted water in Siberia, which caused his mouth to become sore. He has walked through Hungary, Rouma- nis, Poland, the Ural Mountains, Germany, Holland, Belgium, England, France, Italy, and Spain, and is now proceeding to Barcelona. where he will embark for Con- stantinople, and continue the tour to Tur- key, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Servia, and back to Hungary. If he reaches home on the date agreed upon a well-known Austro- Hungarian Society will award him

prize of £6,500.
