According to a Cape Times representa- tive, who saw the best at Cape Town, the Tilikum looks singularly ill adapted to encounter heavy seas. She is long and slim, and slopes in to the keul in a manner to suggest that a puff of wind would blow her over, Her measurements are enough. for any seaman. She has a 30 ft. keel, with a 6 ft. beam over deck. Her depth from the deck is 2 ft. 0 in., and her cabin

roof is 14 in. Migher. She is decked in all over except for the cookpit at the stern which lends into the tiny cabin.

The cabin itself is 8 ft. long and 5 ft. wide, with a tiny bunk, a tiny bench, and a tiny stove, almost its sole furniture, Her weight is 2 tons. She is schooner rigged, with three short slim masts; any- thing heavier would throw her over.

AN AUSTRALIAN MARVEL.

A

Discovery which was made a few years ago in Australia by an eminent scien tist, MF Charles Forde, is now gradually revolutionising the old methods of dealing with livor and kidey ailments and dis orders of the digestive system. After over- coming apparently insurmountable dif ficulties, he succeeded in obtainin a purely vegetal le substance which has the peculiar property of acting on the human system in exactly the same way as nature's animal substance, bi'e. After much careful study he combined this substance with some eight other vegetable ingredients, and then con- centrated the product so obtained until a suitable dose could be compressed into the space offered by a small bean. This medicine, made up in the form of a bean for the bile,' soon became widely known as * Bile Beans.'

8Q

Its ffect on long-standing cases of in- digestion. loss of appetite, weakness, norvous debility, palpitation, headache, Constipation, piles, and female ailments and irregularities, is so wonderfully satisfac- tory, that in Australia at the present time Charles Forde's Bile Beans for Biliousness is not only a household term, but is synonymous with the best home medicine known. For some time now, laboratories bare been open in England, and already the well power of this medicine has been proved that the public confidence in it is daily increasing. Hundreds of thousands of doses are taken daily in the provinces a fact which of itself. is adequate alono proof of the excellence of this medicine as & household remedy. Charles Forde's Bile Beans for Bihusness are not only a certain oure for the disorders mentioned above, but will be found invaluablo in all cases of dizziness, bad breath, rheumatism, the weskening effects of influenza, and the numerous ailments which always attend a bud condition of the blood and digestive organs. For female ailments and irregula rities they are a perfect boon.

Should you be in -hesith and in doubt whether or not Bile Beans are suitable to your case, you may write, giving full particulars of your condition, to the Bile Ban Manufacturing Co., Greek St., Loods, England, where a fully qualified medical staff is engaged to deal fully with such cor respondence, and you will be honestly Answered, free of charge, whether or not Bile Beats have cured cases similar to your

Tinned Meat 27 Years Old.

THE CHINA MAIL.

A Military doctor, invalided home from Kharbin, informs that he attributes much of the increasing sickness among the troops in Manchuria to the state and sour flour and meal and other deleterious food- stuffs supplied by dishonest contractors and accepted by peculative Military inten- dants. It is credibly alleged that some 60,000 or 70,000 cases of tinned meats held in stock since the last Turkish War have been despatched to Manoburis. If the allegation be well founded such a putrid, or partially putrid, consignment is in itself sufficient to create an epidemic among the troops.

Engagement at Palla. London, May 30,-The Jongpen (Fort Commandant) of Shigatse (47 miles forth. west of Gyangtse), coinmanding the Thibe- tan fort, has recalled all the outlying posts, fearing British raids on neighbouring villages.

The Thibetans in their fort furiously bat fruitlessly fired on the British when returning to camp.

The communications in the rear of the British have been reopened.

An interesting report has been issued by the Hildesheim Missionary Society for blind girls in Chins. In opening it says:- The many Chinese passing along the road from Hunghom to Kau Lung City, often stop and look at the plain black board at the foot of the hill, which bears the in- scription Blindenheim' or School for the Blind. The report then goes on to point out the work done at the Home, and finally makes an appeal for the erection of a separate homo for the treatment of girls brought in from the country after having been rescued from slavery.

The Times thus remarks upon this:--- The letter from our Correspondent in Kief Desperate Fighting. shows that the scandalous corruption in the Router's Tokio.correspondent says the Russian Supply departments, which formed the principal cause of the breakdown at the Russians hud 98 guns at Wafengkan, and culminating point of Russia's progress to had the superiority of the position which wards Constantinople in 1878, seems likely to be exceeded in the present campaign. The Losses,

The system seems as bad as ever, and, dospito the official report published this. morning, the sick list in Manchuria must

How the Japanese Advance. A Russian Correspondent notes that the Japanese have adopted a method of advance to the attack of a defended position which demands the utmost accuracy of marksman: ship in the defending force. They extend very widely, leaving broad gaps between each file in the actual advance the men run one behind the other so close that the forehead touches the nape of the neck of the man before. In this way a consider ablo force gets forward without presenting any great target to the defending force.

From the descriptions given, it is plain been practised thoroughly, since its success that this method of advance must have must depend upon the perfect co-operation of the men running so closely together. It seems to solve one of the difficulties of a frontal attack against modern rifle-fire, four or five men getting forward on a single-file width of front, the very wide gaps between the files demanding accurate Admiral Kamikurs has returned the shooting in the defenders, and the fire of the attackers at every halt being four or five fold that of the ordinary skirmishing line still practised in Russia.

A QUESTION OF WASTE WATER..

Two Doctors Summoned.

At the Magistracy this morning Mr H. H. J.Gompertz was asked to decide what .constituted a waste of water during the present time of intermittent supply. The case was one in which an officer of the Water Department proceeded against Dra Wilson and Daniel, of Queen's Road Central, for allowing water to waste on their premises. Oflice, appeared for the defendants. Mr. P. W. Goldring, of Mr John Hastings

Albert W J. Simmonds, overseer of the Water Department, gave evidence to the effect, that on June 16 he inspected the premises occupied by the defendant as a surgery, situated on the first floor of Wat- kins' buildings. On going up the stairs about nine o'clock in the morning he saw a coolie on the roof standing near a tap that was running. The tap had a hose fastened to it, and by monna of a bamboo was made to

convey the water into a cask that stood on the roof. While he was watching, the cask became full and the water ran over. The coolie then turned the hose into a small wooden vessel that stood close by. This also was soon filled and the water again overflow. ed, running off the roof into thepiping below for about five minutes. Witness then went up to the tap and told a Japanese whom he saw that the water was being wasted and that he intended to issue a summons against the doctors.

Every house in the village, some with walls 30ft high and 10ft thick, had to be stormed by the British force separately, after a breach had been blasted in it with guncotton.

When most of the houses had been cap- tared the Thibetans in the fort gallantly tried to reinforce the village. Seventy war- riors, including 15 mounted on mules, charged across from the fort to the village crossing the last 500 yards exposed to

maxim fire from the British.

Of this band of 70 only one got across alive, yet isolated warriors still tried to cross the death-swept ground.

Prisonors declare that the defenders in

the village were new lovies from Lhassa, and if they had been familiar with the ground the village would have been taken. All the defenders of Palla wore killed or wounded, except 40 who surrendered and 50 who escaped."

Hongkong Tides. The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almapao Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa. tor Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zoro of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean soa level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gaugo at Lamont Dook, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
