'He wouldn't hurt a fly,' guffawed the chief artificer.
This was the last straw.
Hollenbook had heard the boys talking About it already. Men who lost even so much as a finger in the Philippines were physically incapacitated for further duty, Not only did they get a full and honorable discharge, but they were commended for bravery in battle and received a pension for life from a grateful Government, Pri- vate Hollenbeck heard all this mrrack- room gossip and made up his mind,

had his back turned; it was easy for Pri vate Hollenbeck to slip away in the dark- ness to the railway tracks. Tere was a freight due in a few minutes.
The boy waited resolutely. Soon down the track came the choo-choo' of the puffing freight, as it climbed the grade. Round the curve flashed the headlight. Hellenbeck, of the awkward squad, knelt down beside the rails. On came the locomotive.
faw It was only & hundred feet away. It was all done very deliberately. The thumb was carefully held outside the track and the third and fourth fingers. But the first and second were clasping the rail. Then Hollenbeck lay down, his hody a far away from the on- coming train as ho could get it without 1147 letting those two fingers slip off the track.

He is now a prisoner at Governor Island. General Corbin, the commandant of that place says:--
It is the most remarkable case I ever heard of. I don't think, in all my army experience, I have seen one like it. Oc- casionally, in the Civil War, a soldier who 1081 got tired of fighting, or wanted to get home, or was an actual coward, would blow off his trigger finger purposely, This incapacitated him from firing his gun and got him a discharge for physical disability. But that such a thing should happen in times of peace seems incredible wore we not confronted with the actual case,

HOW BILE BEANS WERE DISCOVERED,
„AVERYBODY has heard of the great
vefold remedy, bile beans. story of the discovery of this deservedly Famous medicine is worthy of publication. as showing the importance of the observa tion of little things. A few years ago Chas, Förde, an eminent Australian scientist; observation of was impressed by the Captain Cook that the Australian natives. kept themselves free from disease by using On this sub. certain vegetable essences.
wrote: I did not ject Captain Cook observe (amongst the natives) any ap pearance of disease or bodily complaint, or eruption of the skin. Very old men, without no signs of hair and tooth, showed deorepitude, and were full of vivacity."
Now, if this were so, and those essences could but again be discovered, what a boon they would be to modern man! Inspired by this thought, and armed with the in- plements of modern scientific research, Chas. Forde commenced an exhaustive investigation of the rich profusion of Australian herbs. After long research ho found himself the happy discover or of a vegetable substance which acted on the livor and digestive organs differently and better than any medicine known.
The
best laboratories, the most modern plant, and all that science dictated as being best for the purpose was requisitioned in the compounding of this substanco into con- venient from. The result of it all was the production, a few years back, of a medicine compounded in the form of small beans, which boing unequalled in their operation upon the liver and its secretion of bit, were called Bile Beans.'
Being the product of modern scientific research, bile beans are thoroughly up-to- dato. They do not merely purge, give temporary relief only, and leave the patient weakened; like the out-of-date, so-called remedies of forty or fifty years ago, which contain probably aloes, mercury, and other harmful druga. Bile beans, without the slightest discomfort, prompt the liver and digestive organs to act in Nature's normal way, leaving thoso organs strengthened and stimulated to continue the performance of their duties without further assistance. They produce a gentle action on the bowels, curing or preventing constipation, cleansing the stomach, and ridding the system of all impurities.
If you are unwell, and wish to know whether or not bile beans wi'l suit your case, you may write to the Bile Bean Manufacturing Co., Greek St., Leeds, England, where a gratified medical staff will carefully consider your symptoms, and you will be honestly answered whether or not Bile Beans have cured cases similar to yours.
Bile Beans are purely vegetable in com position, and are in certain oure, for in- digestion, biliousness, constipation, piles, Domis, debility, fem le ailments, skin, cruptions, all, liver ailments, and all dis- orders arising from defective bile flow and Assimilation. They are obtainable from all chemists and medicine vendors. Price 75 con's (Mex.)
