Many ladica being unable to obtain admission, motion was made that the gallery be cleared of all toon strangers. and the ladies have their gallery. Several gallant attempts have been made to reform
the grillo altogether, but up to the pre- sent without success.
On the whole, perhaps, Indies may con- gratulate themeves on their present posi- tion in the Commons. If there are draw. backs there are also comperisations. They A are the only strangers permitted to view legislators at the devotions with which the day's work is always commenced.
The reason of this privilege is that their gallery is not considered as being within the four walls of the House. Moreover, Members can bring their lady friends anywhere with- out the formality of going to the Serjeant- t-Arms for the pink ticket which is re- quisite for the introduction of men. Ladios can pass inside the outor doors of the House, and, standing op a little seat, peop through a glass panel into the Chamber. Above all, there is the noble terrace of over 200 yards long for thein in the season. When the sun has gone behind Black Rod's Tower, the terrace is the coolest placo in London. And the ladies have fairly mark- ed it for their own. Here they come in their smartest frocks to enjoy tea and strawberries and cream, and gossip. But, perhaps, the terrace is seen to greatest advantage later on when, after dining in one of those low little Gothic cells, they stroll out for coffee and-name it not 1-a cigarette.
The Lorda treat their woman-folk more liberally then the Commons. In the gilded chamber there is no grille.' Ladies sit openly in the galleries, on the floor, and even, as when the King opens Parliament, among their noble relatives on the crimson benches. This greater latitude may be due to the superior chivalry, or inferior sus- ceptibility of the Peers. Or it may be at-

A Charmed Life.
In all wars there is the man who appears to bear a charmed life, and to be bullet- proof. Such a charactor is Corporal Mizusawa, whose clothing and Accoutre- ments, if accounts are to be believed, during the battle of the Yalu received enough shot to kill a company. The soldier was gallant, and distinguished himself during the battle by wading breast deep across a river, during which time he formed a target for the rifles of the enemy. After the notion Mizusawa proudly counted the bullet holes. There were six in his over- coat, four in his ammunition pouches, one in his cap, and twenty-six in other parts of his clothing, but his body was not even scratched (!).

The Toyo Kisen Kaisha steamer America Maru arrived at Yokohama on her present outward trip from San Francisco in ballast. The fact that the liner had no cargo is said to be due to rumours circulated by the Russians in America that the Rus- sian Volunteer Flect steamers would be sent out to the Pacifle to lie in wait for Ja- panese merchant vessels carrying contra- band. AN
NEARLY DROWNED.
A WOMAN'S Two ESCAPES.
N exciting accident, which might have ended fatally, occurred on the Cardiff Canal, Mrs Emily Thomas, 12, Wernpit road, Landore, was making her way across some limbers floating on the water, whon she missed her footing and fell with a scream into deep water. A man discharg ing a potato-bost some way off rushed to her and got her out, just as she was sinking for the last time..
That was some years ago,' said the victim of this accident, but the memory of it is as vivid as ever, as for ten years I suffered from the effects of this dip in the Cardiff Canal, and if Dr Williams' pink pills had not been the means of a second rescue not less important than the first, I should be aufforing still.
Let me explain. After my falling into the water I had an attack of rheumatic fever, and it seemed doubtful at one time whether I should get var it. The doctor said that even if I did recover I should feel the after effects for the rest of my life. The next ten years bore out his words. I used to get pains in the head, followed by fits of sickness and retching, which Instod for four or five days at a time, I diuted myself on milk puddings and other light fare, but the food was no sooner in my stomach than it returned; in fact, it wa quite impossible for me to retain anything One day a friend of mine came to see me, She had been ill. and was cured by Dr Williams' pink pills, and as she asked me why I didn't try them, I sont for a bottle, and to my surprise they toons put me on my feet again.
Three days after 1 had commenced taking the pills I was able to take my ordinary food and digest it without feeling any iffet whatever! When the first done I bought three more. bottle was though I found it was not rocessary to take them all. I have enjoyed splendid health for the last six months; I don't think 1 ever felt so strong in my life
as I do now.
1 am positive that I owe my roenvery to Dr Willism pink pills for palo prople, branuse I had left off all other medicines. before I began them, and it was not until I commenced to take them that my health began to improve. I shall be very pleased if you will publish what I have told you."
Considering that rheumatic fever hard ly ever completely cured by ordinary medicine, Mrs Thomas was right in re

ferring to her cure, after suffering ten years off and on, as a second rescue quite as important as the first. What makes this disome so dangerous is that it impoverishes and poltures the blood with the deadly rheumatic poison, lactic acid, which is not only always ready to seize on any weak joint or muscle and es usa terrible pain, but also seriously interferes with the action of the heart. Dr Williams' pink pills for pale people (note the full namo, because if you take pink pills that have not the full name on the wrapper you have been deceived by their ex. worthless substitute) owe traordinary cures to the fact that they make new blood. Women especially find in this new blood, which is pure, rich and regular, a cure for the many pains which they know when to expect and men find the pila the greatest tonic and strengthen- ing medicine for the nerves and back. Dr Williams' Medicine Company, Holborn. viaduct, London, send them post free for two shillings and ninepence, or six bottle for thirteen and nine. Mrs Thomas thanks thom alone for her rescue from the after- effects of her arthing adventure and terrible struggle in the icy waters of the Cardiff Canal.
