sacred volume is specially inspired? He answers: Inspiration is not allowed to certify the truth of any statement which cannot be substantiated at the bar of reason and evidence. Inspiration is not allowed to overri.e the objections which the Christiau conscience takes against much which is recorded in the older Scriptures, The day has gone by for proof texts and harmonies. And so with canonicity,

What authority is added to any book of Scripture by the circumstance that it is canonical? Does any thoughtful man find in the fact that the Book of Esther is canonical any reason for revising the un- favorable judgment which he is certain to form of that work? Or does the absence

of canonicity in the ease of the Book of Wisdom detract in the alightest degree froin its historic interest and its spiritual value?'

:

Canon Hongun goes much further, how- over, when he commends as praiseworthy teaching which 'distinctly throws doubt on the recorded miracles. As an illustration of this teacking a school history prepared by a Dr Fry is quoted. The author. Canon Henson observes, does not any- whore, in so many words, deny the Biblical miracles, but he invariably adopts a mode

of speech which suggests that the miracles did not happen. Thus we aro continually told that such and such wore the boliofa which the Israelite had about themselves and their history. Whether the beliefs are true is not stated.' This non-committal treatment of the miracles is commended by Canon Henson as perfectly legitimate.

One paragraph in Dr Fry's book specially It relates the with approval. account of the giving of the law on Mount Sinai. The author explains the in- cident in this wise:-When they came to Sinai, Moses went up into the mount to speak with Jehovab, and when he came down, the people were kopt from touching the sacred mountain, lest they should perish or gaze upon God, for this was what And ancient people thought possible. Jehovah, the God of the Storm Clouds, came down amidst thunderings and light- nings, but only Moses and Aaron were suffered to go on to the mount. It was believed that Jehovah himself at Sinai gavu Moses the law. We read of a visit to the

Three reasons are advanced by Canon

Benson ne justifying the paramount place of the Bible in Christian society. The first is that it is the best manual of fundament-

al morality. The second is that it is a Court of Appeal from the Churches to the individual Christian. Ecclesiastical laws and rubrics grow obsolete or become im practicable. In the New Testament Canon Henson sees 'not a code of laws, or a collection of binding precedents, but a repertory of first principles, expressed

Biblical criticism is almost as old as the

While seeking to strengthen authority he does much to undermine it. A great controversy will be waged around the position taken by the learned Canon of Westminster. Already he has been do nounced as an enemy to orthodoxy, and he must now do battle for the views ho has espoused. Canon Benson is fifty-one years of ago.

He is a strenuous worker, with slender frame, stooping figure, and the face of a monk. His influential position makes it impossible for the champion of | the Bible to ignore the challeng
