the attitude of the Lhassa officials con- tinues to be defiant.

It appears that the booby trap let down on the reconnoitring party at Karola was constructed on most ingenious principles. It was concealed behind sangars, and the party was not aware of its existence till they heard a tremendous avalanche of rocks crashing down the hillside. Fortunately the trap was discharged, not on the main body, but on six advanced scouts, who were extended at twenty paces and able to tako cover.

A LAST MEETING.

A touching story (ways the Kobe Chronale) is told in the vernacular papors of the brief meeting of two officers of the opposing armies on the battlefield of Chulion-cheng. Sub-Lieutenant Inouye Kankichi, attached to the 2nd Company of the 4th Regiroent (Second Division), was climbing Soriba chiyama, the name given by the Japaneso army to the bare bill a little to the east of Chulien-cheng, when he noticed among the large number of Russian wounded, who were lying in all directions, an officer ap- parently a Captain--who was badly hurt. Unable to move, ho glanced at the Japan ese officer with a look half of repulsion. His expression quickly changed when the Japanese stopped and addressed him in 'I am sorry you are in such pain, let me give you some water." He unstrapped his water-bottle and put it to the Russian's parched lips. Surprised at finding a friend in one who was but

That something unforseen is in the wind, however, is apparent from the fact that the Portuguese cruiser Adamastor, which left for Shanghai on Sunday last, has been recalled south. This is significant, and lend a certain amount of colour to the

statements abroad.

The British Naval authorities profess equal ignorance of the matter, and, even if the demonstration had occurred, they belittle the importance of it. The subject of the dissension is purely local, and would be settled without British intervention. As far as they could see it was nothing of any magnitude. The gunboat Robin, however, was at Macao in event of hostilities, and would report if necessary.

In the aggregate, the Exports for April show a decrease of close upon a million you as against the trade for April last year, due principally to the decrease in the export of Cotton Yarns, Coal, Raw Silk, and Copper. There was an increase, as will be seen, in the export of Manufactured Articles. The present prosperity of the Fukui and Kanazawa habului producing districts is seen in the amount of this quality of Silk Tissue exported. The quantity of Cigarettes, sent principally to Formosa, China, and Korea, has also largely increased, probably being done in view of the coming Monopoly in excess of the demand, this no doubt

There are no other increases of importance. The aggregate Exports for the four months 81,920,760 in the corresponding period of amount to yen 91,208,840, as against yon
