TIGHT BETWEEN A TIC- POLONGA AND A
COBRA.
Can Snakes Polson One Another 7.
The following curious incident, which happened recently on a Kelani Valley estate, is related by a correspondent to the Times of Ceylon
Singalese have often told me that when a cobra and another venomous anake meet, there is usually a battle royal, in which one, or perhaps both, of the combatants are slain, by their venomous bites.
I was inclined to doubt this statement, but to-day a tic-polonga was found in the 920 compound dead, and from no apparent cause. There was only a small spot of blood on the back, but no perceptible wound. About an hour or two after the dead tic was found, a large cobra was seen exactly at the same spot, and evidently on the search for his late antagonist.

in the Martian canals, which have so long puzzled astronomers, are due to the deliber- ate effort at irrigation made by the people of Mars themselves.
•
During the 1903 opposition of Mars, Mr Lowell observed changes in the canals which he believes were the results of artificial interference. Among the canals mapped by Schiaparlli in 1877 were three, situated on the castern edge of the Syrtis Major, which met at a common point, the Lacus Tritonis, and, which he named Thoth, Troiton, and Nepenths respectively, · In 1882 and 1884 Thoth appeared double, but was undoubtedly seen, and in 1884 Nepenthes was also distinctly double.
At the commencement of Mr Lowell's observations in 1894 he was surprised to find no trace of these three canals,

Amenthes was still visible, but less dis- tinct, and on April 19 it was accompanied by Thoth in exactly the position shown on i Schiaparelli's earlier map; on April 20 Thoth alone was visible. Suddenly, on May 29, the Lacus Moeris, which had long been given up, appeared and became a noticeable feature of that region of the planet's surface. In July Amenthes reap- peared alongside Thoth and Triton, and PUPILS attended at their own homes, thus settled the question of the presence
of two canals, or Lessons by Post.

These changes are entirely independent of the seasonal changes, and while the two 'visibility' curves of Thoth and Amenthes vary inversely, the curve derived from the summation of them agrees very closely with that of a mean canal, for which only the seasonal changes have as yet been observed.

From these phenomena Mr Lowell res- sons that owing to the small amount of water on Mars it becomes necessary to irrigate the surface in sections, and for this purpose the canals are artificially re- gulated. Sixty Cossacks made their appearance there one day and left the next day. The following day Japanese troops appeared. The Coreans in the North-west are very much afraid of the Russians, and deserted their villages en masse when any Cossacks were near. The Colonial Secretary:-Pending the construction of the rider main system under which there should always be water in the mains available for all fires even when water is cut off from houses, the means is considered reasonably suficient. On the occurrence of fire during the intermittent supply water is always turned on in the maine and is available at adequate pressure on the average 15 minutes after the aların of fire is given. There are also three steam fire engines for
in Victoria and vicinity and during the intermittent water supply the Boating engine is moored on the Victoris side of the Harbour. engines used by the Fire Brigade are quite officient and have not in any way deteriorat ed through age. They deliver about 300 gallons of water a minute and will stand a pressure of 120 lbs to the square inch. Government does not at present propose to take any steps to increase its fire extinguish. ing apparatus. To do so would prove expensive and later on unnecessary.

Hongkong Tides. The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London.from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tido-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.”
