LONDON,

Facing the 'Bus-Driver,

The Rational Dress' reformers are once more on the warpath in London against the obnoxious skirt, and a serious endea- vour to popularise the "bloomer" is being made. Following the expedition of three rationalists to the Crystal Palace there was another visit, when two ladies in the new attire travelled down to inspect the Clothing Exhibition in the Great Hall there. They passed across Ludgate Cirous at the busiest time in the day, and their appearance was the occasion of no small amount of critical comment from numerous 'bus-drivers, amall boys, and other con" noisseurs

of fashion. One of the ladies- wore a brown knickerbocker and jacket suit-the nether garment full and loose-- fitting close at the knee, with black gaitere and low shoes, without the usual, high- heels. The other rational dress was black. afrather longer ssc-jacket almost covering the rationale, while on the head was perched a little fur Canadian gaiters and shoes completed the outfit.

M. Yves Guyot says: I hope that from words facts will result and that two of the results, at least, will be (1) that England will relinquish all opposition to the establish- ment of a tunnel under the Channel be. tween France and England, and (2) that France will waive her exaggerated ware- house dues on English goods.

M. Deloncle, the president of the Parlis- mentary Group of Foreign Trade, writes: No

progress, however important it might be, would be of so much value to the two countries as the establishment of a tunnel between Calais and Dover. Time

Time only and force of circumstances will do their work, and we must wait patiently until cool and collected reasoning such as existed before 1882 will have overcome English public opinion and made England acknowledge, changing her mind' with that admirable tact of which she possesses the secret, that the opening of a submarine tunnel or the building of a bridge connecting the opposite shores of the Channel would affect neither her commerce, navigation, nor national security.

The Anglo-French understanding,' says Baron D'Estournelles de

de Constant, the

President of the French Parliamentary Arbitration Group, has never been in my mind other than an advance towards indis- pensable reconciliation. I feel sure that these are your sentiments; they mean the interests of France, of Europe, and of the whole civilised world." Lord Brassey says

FIGHTING IN SOUTH AMERICA,

San Francisco, May 10.-In a fierce battle which has been raging for several days at Acro the Brazilians have finally routed the Peruvians with heavy loss. The killed of the Peruvians is placed at over two thousand. The quarrol has its source in a question of territory. For years past bad blood has existed between these two on account of a large region of unexplored land along their joint borders. Encroachments have been made by parties from one or the other state from time to time, although of late years it was generally understood that the river Javary constituted the dividing line. Peru has always been a belligerent country and has had several wars with her southern neighbour, Chile. Recently these two republica held a peace convention at which it was agreed that they should dis. pose of their fleets in corresponding ratio. This is now being done and within a few years neither power will possess any war weasole.

THE DESTROYER.

A dwarfish thing of steel and fire:

My iron nerves obey.

The bidding of my crafty sire,

Who drew me out of clay,

And sent me forth, on paths untrod,

To slay his puny clan;

A slave of hell, a scourge of God;

For I was made by Man.

When foul fog curtains droop and meet

Athwart an oily sea;

My rhythmic pulse begins to beat;

"Tis hunting time for me,

A breathing swell is hardly seen

To stir the emerald deep,

As through that ocean jungle green

1, velvet-footed, creap.

And lo! my proy, a palace roared

Above an arsenal,

By lightning's viewless Enger steered,

Comes on, majestical,

The mists before her bows dispart :

And 'neath that Traitor's Gate

The royal vessel, high of heart,

Sweeps queenlike to her fate.

Too confident of strength to hool

The menacing faint sound,

As from their leash, like bloodhounds freed,

The snub torpedoes bound;

She does not note them quartering wide,

Nor guess what lip is this

That presses on her stately side

Its biting Judas' kiss.

Till with a roar that fright the stars,

Her cracking timbers rond,

And lurid smoke and flaming spars

In one red storm ascend;

Whose booming thunder drowns the cries

Of myriad souls in paid ;

Where tossed on turbid waters lios,

My quarry, torn in twain.
