And Other Itching, Burning, Scaly Eruptions with Loss of Hair.
Speedy Cure Treatment.
Bathe the affected parts with Hot Water and Cuticura Soap, to cleanse the surface of crusts and scales, and soften the thickened cuticle. Dry, without hard rubbing, and apply Cuticura Ointment freely, to allay itching, Irritation, and Inflammation, and soothe and heal, and lastly take Cuticura Rèsolvent Pills, to cool and cleanse the blood. A single set is often sufficient to cure the most torturing, dis- figuring, itching, burning, scaly, pimply humours, eczemas, rashes, Irritations, and chafings, with loss of hair, when all else falis,
The agonizing itching and burning of the skin, as in eczema; the fright- ful scaling, as in psoriasis; the loss of hair and crusting of the scalp, as in scalled head; the facial disfigurement, as in plinples and ringworm; the awful suffering of infants and the anxiety of worn-out parents, as in milk orust, tetter, and salt rheum, all donand a remedy of almost superhuman virtues to successfully cope with them. Such are the. CUTICURA remedies, the purest, sweetest, most, speedy and economical curatives for the skin scalp, and blood ever compounded. Mothers are their warmest friends.
Millions of Women Use Cuticura Soap
Asalsted by CUTICURA OINTMENT for preserving, purifying, and beautify. ing the skin, for cleansing the scalp of crusts, scales, and dandruff, and the stopping of falling hair, for softening, whitening, and soothing red, rough, and sore lands, for baby rashes and chafinge, in the form of baths for annoying irritations and inflammations of women, or too free or offensivo, perspiration, in the form of washes for ulcerative weaknesses, and many sanative, antiseptic purposes which readily suggest themselves, as well as for all the purposes of the tollet, bath, and nursery,
CUTICURA RESOLVENT PILLS (Chocolate Coated) are a new, tasteless,
odourless, economical substitute for the cele brated liquid CUTICURA RESOLVENT, as well as for all other blood purifiers and humour cures. Put up in screw-cap pocket vials, containing 80 doses,

CANNIBALISM:
A Chinaman and four Others Eaten.
His Imperial German · Majesty's' ship Condor, which returned to Sydney on April 12 after an extensive cruise among the islands of the South Sea, brought news of further acts of cannibalism in the Admiral- ty Islands, situated to the north of German New Guinea (says the Sydney Morning Herald). When the Condor reached Her bertshos, in New Britain, the seat of gov- vernment in the German Archipelago, it was reported that five murders had been committed by the natives on the south-east coast of the Admiralty Island, and the war- ship at once left for the scene to investigate the matter and to punish the offenders.
J
From what could be gathered it appears: that a Chinaman and four black boys were suddenly attacked by a tribe of natives, and were killed with spears and clubs. The bodies of the unfortunate men were then collected and a huge fire was kindled, round which the tribe of natives gathered to witness them roasting.
The natives, who are perhaps the most barbarous of any of the inhabitants of the South Seas, danced round the fire making hideous noises and rejoicing in the feast in which they were about to take part. Eventually, when the bodies of the five men had been cooked, the natives, numbering some hundreds, were seated in a circle and greedily devoured what had been prepared for them.
An expedition well armed was sent ashore from the Condor, and from inquiries made among the natives the ringleaders
were picked out and placed under arrest. The bones of the five murdered men were found and were interred. The prisoners were conducted on board the warship, and were kept under strict surveillance.
As soon as the members of the expedition had returned to the Condor the warship opened fire on the village. The bombard ment, however, was not continued long, and there was probably little, if any, loss of life. As soon as the first shell exploded on shore the natives fled to the hills, and the village was absolutely deserted. In deed, some hundreds of the natives, upon

The cruise just completed by the Condor has been a very interesting one, and a great deal of surveying has been carried out for the correction of charts. The Condor sailed from Sydney last September, and proceeded to Brisbane. The island cruise was commenced from there on October 1, Suva and Levuka, în the Fiji Group, being the first ports of call. A long stay was made at Samoa, where the people were found to be happy and prosperous. The officers of the Condor were particularly struck by the high state of civilisation attained by the natives, and by the fact that large numbers of young colonists are settling there. In December the Condor went to £
o Suva (Fiji) for couple of days, procending from thence to Jaluit, in the Marshall Islands, where the vessel remained for five days for gun practice and coaling. ANOTHER TAX ON TEA.
Freight Rates to be Again Raised.
Just about a year ago (says the Times of : Ceylon) freight on teas to London was. raised from 258 to 278. Bd. per ton, equivalent to about £12,000 extra on shipments during the past 12 monthe. From the lat May, freight on our staple product is to be still further increased by another half-a-crown per ton, making it. * 30s, per shipping ton, Surely the local Shipping Conference might, at this juncture, reconsider their decision to tax the planting industry to the tune of a further R180,000 Several of the leading mem- per annum,

if they exhibit the same energy in watching |
the planters' interest on the freight ques tion as they have done regarding the in- crease of duty in England, they will earn the gratitude of the Planters' Association. The latter body, anyhow, might well dis- css the subject at their next general meet- ing, and bring some pressure to bear directly upon the Chamber of Commerco (whose Chairman represents one of the leading Shipping Companies) and, through This institution, on the Shipping Confer

REVIEW.
FROM A DAVOS BALCONY, By Amy Mc- Laren. London: Dorkworth and Co.
1904.
There seems to be in vogue an attempt to revive the lust art of letter-writing. These Letters, writton from Davos, are scarcely calculated to form a new classica mel, but they are readable. James, the wifely condutted, is funny, especially at the Fancy-dress Skato. The above data has been arrived at from the analysis of some 29 bulk samples from the various localities, the Silica contents varying from 0.3 per cent. to 28.30 per cent., and the Manganese from 42.72 per cent to 57-50 per cent., the average being

general direction nearly East and West.as follows: Between these ranges of hills are immense ravines or gorges, in which the rivers take their source, thence flowing in a Westerly direction to the Bay,
The country rock is of a Jaspery nature overlaying altered Greenstones, with Hornblendic, Chloritic and other schits. The Manganese Ore is almost invariably found associated with this Biliceous material of one variety or another. In some local ities it takes the form of Jaspor, and in others Chert; this, therefore, accounts for theunusually high Silica contents of the ore. Where this ingredient is of a Cherty nature it is plainly visible and could be separated from the ore by trimming, hand sorting, or probably by some means of mechanical concentration at no very great cost; but, where it enters into combination as a Silicate, it is not easily detected, nor can it be separted. Fortunately, however, with the more Niliceous varieties of the ore it is found in the form of Chert, thus affording facilities for its elimination.
The ore is essentially what is termed
• Peilomelane,' a variety mainly composed of the Peroxide of Manganese. In few localities, notably at Kajukujs, it takes more the form of 'Pyrolusite,' where Oxide of Barium replaces the Silica to a considerable extent, and is seldom met with in the latter variety, the Silica vary- ing form only 0.3 per cent. Barium in the form of an oxide is not a deleterious ingredient, as it would behave as a flux in the reduction of the ore.

Rather more than a year ago we printed in this journal (Times of India) a letter written from Hongkong in which attention was directed to the pressing need for a European reservation in that colony. At that time, although the urgency of the ques tion was generally recognised in European circles at Hongkong, there appeared to be no disposition in that busy community to take organised steps to place it in a well- considered form before the loal Govern- ment. What was everybody's business had ended in being nobody's business; and while merchants and officials alike were ready to bewail the dangor that threatened them, they had not made up their minds to face it in a vigorous and practical man- ner. A very different spirit appears to have now succeeded the comparative apathy of a year ago. The European residents, acting in unison, have drafted a petition to the Government in which they ask that the Hill District may be declared European have responded with a promptitude which, reservation: The Hongkong Government it is typical of their methods, entitles the an Administration. Within five weeks a colony to congratulation upon so energetic Bill was drafted, and brought before the 918 Legislative Council, and it has already been read a first time.
